Last Kansas Highway Patrol Crown Vic Retired

Featured Replies

I figured this was somewhat sad. The end of a chapter for this state.

There's a video with the article as well.

It seems kind of wasteful to cut vehicles off at 49,500 miles but I see the point. They sell the vehicles while they still have value, and before major possible repairs arrive.

That my friend...are new charger alloys. I guess they come both with those shitty alloys and the 2006-2014 gen.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

My area still has a lot of vics roaming around along with the current (2012-2015) stuff. I think its a pretty good mixture which I like. Sad to see KHP retire their last crown.

I am glad I live in California; CHP bought as many of those badasses as they could the day Ford announced 2011 was the last year...gonna have vics roaming probably another decade around me :)

We've still got a few Vics - probably 2012 ones, though the JCSD has a few older than that with old Edges on them. These days it's mostly Tahoes and FPIUs.

Also, relevant song:

WOW they retire them after 49k miles? I've rode in a CHP Crown Vic with 127k miles on it.

It depends on the department. I've never heard of any department getting rid of them with that low of mileage on them (the generally accepted number is around 80 - 90,000 miles), but I can't rule it out since some departments see more action than others, have different road and weather conditions than others, get the interior more beat up than others, have better or worse car maintenance than others, etc. Where I used to live, the F.T.O. I met from the local police department had so few cars they would actually never turn them off. The officer finishing his shift would return to base, open the door for the next officer on duty, he'd get in and then he'd drive off. They'd simply stop off for fuel every now and then, and shut it off for a short period of time to fill up the tank, or when they had to take a meal break. They were very beat up by the 90,000 mile mark. The one he had used prior to my ride along had 95,000 miles on it, and he said he wouldn't dare take it over 90mph due to its condition. The CHP is a huge department, and therefore probably has an excellent car maintenance team or a very reliable service station that keeps their cars in good shape so they can milk as many miles out of it as possible.

They do have good maintenance. Every office has a fully stocked garage and mechanic. The office I'm an explorer at retired all the crown vics last year. Their all PIU's except a few expeditions for snow (not gonna need those anymore lol) and a few ford f-250's. The particular car I was talking about raddled like crazy I thought it was gonna fall apart. The abuse CHP puts on them is crazy 0-120 MPH catching up to speeders for 12 hours a day is ruff on a car. My buddy bought a retired CHP CVPI and its still going strong with 250,000 miles on it.

This is just like my county, i have not even seen a CV sheriif cruiser period, and my city just got rid of the majority of there vics for FT....... -_- why? CVs are so classic, well at least GSP still believes in them.

Looks like KHP have their shit together if their fleet age is 2-3 years. Meanwhile in Chicago their still using '03's (you know, the ones that have those steel rims noone seems to like) that look like this:

That is interesting to hear.

Really crappy to have several incidents in my province where some car thief/jackass screws with the local dept, rcmp detachment.

There was an incident with a box truck,  and one with a pick up truck within the last year and a bit I think.   Smashed 3-5 at each incident.
