OpenIV discontinued | Take Two claims game modding "illegal"

Message added by Cyan

Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

Please don't upload or share versions of OpenIV - we don't have permission from the OpenIV team to host their work on our community.

I sure hope this is some sort of prank or scam, as mentioned before this C/D demand letter seems to be full of typos and spelling mistakes. Lawyers are usually pretty thorough on these matters so it does seem a little fishy. In any case, OpenIV can still be used as long as you yank your ethernet cable before updating it, and possibly keeping the game at a previous version through the launcher bypass mod. Hopefully we'll get some real information on whether this is a genuine demand or some idiot playing with the tool creators.

Where can I find a copy of this C&D letter?

--------------To make it all clear, here is what happened:1 - At May 19th, 2017, I received an email from the legal counsel for Take Two Interactive in the USA. In this email they has requested to stop immediately any further work and/or distribution of OpenIV and "Liberty City in GTAV" projects.2 – In belief, that we did not violate any laws, I asked them to provide more detailed information about their request. They agreed to provide details by email.3 – On June 5th, 2017, after two weeks of silence, I got C&D letter from lawyers company (legal representative of Take Two in Russia), both in electronic and paper form, to my employer address. This C&D accuses me in Russian laws violations.4 – After many heavy thoughts, we had decided to agree with their claims. We did not make it easily; it is very hard decision for us.--------------

First time I am here in a while. Fuck, I don't think many remember me. But whatever.

This in first of all, a real blow in the face to me, who personally loved modding when I was into it, and I had plans to try to get back to it, sometime. But I guess I was too late.

Also, this was a really fucking awful move when it comes to business. They're chasing away one of their most hard-core fanbases, the modders. And now they're all going away.

This is a big middle finger to the modding community, and T2 and R* deserves the shit they are getting.

The PCGamer article now states "Update: I've communicated with GooD-NTS via email and I believe this to be a legitimate legal notice sent on behalf of Take-Two. I've also received word from Rockstar that a statement will be issued "shortly" but I have not received it yet. I will update this story again if and when I receive the statement."

So hopefully we get something from Rockstar soon.

Oh well. I won't be contributing any more money to this charade. Hopefully things like zmod and ragehook won't be targeted as well, but who knows, as it seems they are randomly targeting segments of the community.

Sorry for the meme, but whatever:

There's an upside should this turn out to be true, and they screw us all over, I will have 60 odd gigabytes of space free as I won't be playing that excuse of an Online Experience.

Get with it Take 2.

I was thinking about this as well.,  There's so many other games I've yet to play in my library.  Like you, I will never play GTA Online again. There's no point.

I think a lot of people are overreacting about this. Yeah its really shitty how T2 have made such a bad decision, but right now GTA modding is not affected. OpenIV still works, which many are failing to understand. If you were smart you would have made a backup through RPH for the update that literally just came out so no issues there as well. As some have already said, there will be OpenIV alternatives if OpenIV stops working because there are people out there with the knowledge and dedication to make one.

Really the only thing im pretty pissed about is now we won't get a fucking Liberty City mod from OpenIV team, i've been waiting for that since Jan 1st!!!!!

It's not really an overreaction.  You need to think about this.  OpenIV still works for now, but they very well could put out a patch that disables it in some way. This, and the future of modding, is what we're concerned with.

It was the GTA IV map mod.

WHAT DID I TELL YOU?!

After the Red Dead one, this should have been shelved.

So one single map mod is the source of T2 cracking down on modding? Fuckin really?  Here's the thing that confuses me.  Was the c&d for OpenIV, or the map project?  His edit makes it sound like they only cared about that project.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

So if OpenIV still works now and when the new script hook v update is out people can still mod and use mods then why are so many people so worried? Surely as long as we block any future updates all is still  good?

I think it's more the statement this makes. Shutting down OpenIV is essentially Take Two saying they do not want anyone using mods in GTA, regardless on if you play Online. They probably didn't mean for it to be that way, to be fair they probably barely know what OpenIV does, but it makes a pretty big statement. Before, it was basically "don't ask, don't tell."

Nerdcubed News video is my source. It's almost prophetic.

Article in question, I'd read afterwards: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-04-24-red-dead-redemption-gta5-mod-shut-down-after-three-year-development

It's been three years, but I'm back again...

Do you have a source for that?

According to GooD-NTS's edit on gtaforums, they specifically mention to stop the Liberty City in GTA V project:

Meaning it is pretty likely that is why they are doing this. OpenIV has been around for ten years, but the Liberty City project has only been around for 6 months.

If this is true, surely they can just shelve the Liberty project and keep OpenIV live unless specified?
