OpenIV discontinued | Take Two claims game modding "illegal"

Message added by Cyan

Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

Message added by Original Light

Please don't upload or share versions of OpenIV - we don't have permission from the OpenIV team to host their work on our community.

It means they will have to get  jobs or find alternatives I suspect!

So what about the LSPDFR YouTubers that play this game for a living? Is recording it going to be prosecutable? Will Take-Two actually enforce this rule that modding is apparently "illegal"? I by no means live off of my LSPDFR channel, but Jeff Favignano, Bayareabuggs, Polecat, and Stevethegamer are just a few full time YouTubers that focus on the LSPDFR mod. What does this mean for us content creators?

I blame GTA Online trolls and hackers for giving the modding community a bad name , i blame the stupid kids who can't make the difference between a modder and a hacker , i can't blame Take Two for this decision because it's their game and their money and i hope LSPDFR won't be touched by this crap .

I don't read too good ...

Yeah, Jeff just tweeted that this will most likely mean the end of LSPDFR on his channel.

Hey guys, I'm really not sure where to put this so my apologies if it's in the wrong section, but I figured this could fall under "Current Events"...

I went to open up OpenIV and I saw this. This is the link that it took me to. Has anybody else gotten this? Really hoping it's some sort of prank or something, because I'm going to be devastated if LSPDFR comes to a halt because of this.

"To avoid legal issues."  Someone should inform them that just because you discontinue PROVIDING a service doesn't mean the previous customers have to suffer and give up their copy as well.  I'm not uninstalling shit.  Good luck in your "legal" endeavor.

What truly shows their stupidity is that they claim modding is illegal.  This has to be a joke.  There is no way these guys genuinely think this.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

Those creating GoFundMe's so OpenIV can afford legal representation: I hope you're all donating a few thousand each

Take-Two is a multibillion company who most likely have hundreds of lawyers at their disposal. You'd be better of opening your window & throwing your donation into the wind.

Incredibly disappointing news but let's not be silly.

Except it does say "We strongly recommend..." Not, "You will now be forced to..."

Yes, but then it follows up with "to avoid legal issues".  Really, who is going to know aside from us that we still have and use it?  That was them trying to threaten us in a nice way.

Anybody with a brain, really.

People are overreacting. Someone will create something similar within a few weeks. If that gets taken down, someone else will make a new one, if that gets taken down, someone else will make a new one, rinse and repeat. Don't underestimate the power of modders and their determination.

It doesn't have to be as fancy as OpenIV, or as pretty, or as functional. It could be a quick mashup to simply let you install car mods and nothing more.

I really hope this story isn't true.

@Original Light But if someone makes another modding tool, will it be as good as OpenIV? That's what I'm worried about.

It doesn't have to be. It just has to be somewhat functional. A streamlined design with minimal features is more than enough for something that could be at risk of getting taken down at a moment's notice.

Well i can't speak for anyone else but personally i'm not uploading any LSPDFR for the foreseeable future. I know how these things kinda work and they'll be on the lookout for an example to make. It's just not worth the risk for Youtubers. For bigger youtubers like them, it's a potential livelihood ender if Rockstar chase them. We need to see how things shake out in future.
