OpenIV discontinued | Take Two claims game modding "illegal"

Message added by Cyan

Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

Please don't upload or share versions of OpenIV - we don't have permission from the OpenIV team to host their work on our community.

I'm sorry, you're right, didn't mean to lash out. It's just that I'm starting to see this image pop up left and right, and I think it's undermining current efforts to establish a dialogue with Rockstar/Take Two by giving people the impression that their action was ultimately justified when that's not necessarily the case.

Given the current context, it's easy to assume that he's talking about Rockstar's code, but it could be a number of other things - code taken without permission from other unrelated programs or projects, or even code he wrote himself on company time for his employer, which would be "illegal" to use in a personal project even if he's the author as it's technically company property... not that these situations would be ok, but they wouldn't be T2's problem.  It could also be that he made up the "illegal" story just to have an excuse not to share the code with that other guy (who can't seem to take "no" for an answer).

I do think that the person who first circulated that image has an agenda. Given that it's from a personal convo, it sounds like a grudge for not sharing the source code with them back then. By the way, the date on that convo (Feb 2015) predates the release of GTA V on PC... someone who doesn't notice that in the heat of the moment might think the convo took place in the last few days and is a smoking gun that validates T2's actions.

I see what you mean... Hopefully OpenIV will come back...

I've been thinking a little bit, and this situation doesn't make sense.  Some claim that the only reason OpenIV got the shaft was because of their Liberty City project.  If this was the case, why wouldn't Take Two just say "stop the project"?  Why stop OpenIV entirely?  Either they truly believe OpenIV is helping people to get online modded, or they are continuing to blatantly lie in order to hide the fact that they don't want their title modded.

THIS, 100%  A lot of you saying "this is an overreaction" don't understand this could be the start of something bigger.  Other companies could see Rockstar ('cause fuck Take Two, most of us only look at Rockstar as being the giants) doing this and think 'This might not be a bad idea'. Then you have several other games such as Skyrim that kill off modding. We are have the right to freak out, especially if it lets Take Two know that we do NOT support their idiotic decision.

So you'd stop developing LSPDFR just because some company that is too big for their britches is throwing around threats? That is exactly why they do it, because they know everyone will back down and they can continue being assholes.  They wouldn't win in a court case, because they have no fucking case to begin with.  It's scary to think LSPDFR could be shut down all to avoid a court battle.   If Take Two can do this to OpenIV, you bet your ass they can do it to you.

I'm not sure anyone wants to risk taking on T2s legal team as I'm sure they have the best money can buy, that said It's a simple case of David VS. Goliath, get yer sling shots ready boyz, hit them where it hurts, Boycott em other than the petition or reconsideration on their part it's the only way! Besides like OpenIV said court cases take a long time the whole thing would be tied in up in the court dockets and unless someone can get a judge to stop T2 till the case is heard it's just not worth it! Not to mention OpenIV said that they can not reveal the source code due to something not being legal? I don't think that's something you want to take into a legal battle.

I would like to know the reason Take Two started this bullshit for. Did they actually claim that owning OpenIV or modding in general must be considered a crime? What a bunch of shitty fucking twats!

Their reason is because the GTAOnline cancer pool fund is running dry.  This is a last ditch effort to force people into GTA Online to buy shark cards.  That is the only reason.  Modding doesn't hurt ANYONE, never has.  Take Two are just salty that they can't make profits from mods like FiveM.  I promise you if Take Two and Rockstar got ahold of FiveM, we'd be seeing micro transactions out the ass.  "Hey, give us $5 and we'll let you drive an unmarked sports car!"

Well it's double edged sword, there is a legitimate reason and that is the cancer that are modders abusing the online system are out of control, yes they ban them but not enough, that's the legitimate as for the other reasons yeah not so legitimate and pretty much is about $$

How do we not know that they did not get bought out? I do not know russian law's (exept for vodka is manditory every hour) but would'nt it be a better option to buy them out for a small sum of money (considering russia is not in a good economic state at the moment) than to threaten them with legal action? Everything that I hear and see just does not make since sometime's, and with the replies on there chat thing that I saw a page earlier, it seem's like to me they signed an agreement with take 2, possibly made some good money, and are under agreement not to talk on the subject matter. I follow law and politics, and even if they used 25 different lawers, just one could butcher them all and it would be a loss to take poo. And on the subject of lobbying, only 3% of law's are passed by the United States Federal Government a year, DemiCrips and ReBloodicans are Picky Racoons.

The online cheaters are NOT affiliated with LSPDFR, Rage, ScriptHook, OpenIV, etc, so legitimate single player only mods should not be getting the shaft as well.    The solution is not to just cut mods completely.  Aside from how stupid that is, lets be real. All mods could be shut down today, only for more to pop up within a week.  There's no point.  Take Two and Rockstar are in a losing fight.

This my opinion.

You raise an interesting point. It does seem dubious at best.

California's regulations have more weight than federal regulations at this point because manufacturers know if they want to sell in CA (they do) they need to comply.

I couldn't see that ending well though, just because of the vast amounts of money that would be involved in legal representation against Take Two's vast legal department if it escalated to that, for very little award (continuing the status quo).

You are forgetting. This is America. I have been experiencing intermittent anxiety, distress, and emotional angst  over T2 illegal infringements of my rights. I personally value that distress at $100 per hour I cannot play GTA V with the mods I know and love. I imagine this exact feeling is shared by the 38,000  that have signed the petition. That is say, maybe half a million dollars in damages so far...

Not that is a very good legal argument (about on par with T2 assertions) but if I had a board room full of $800/hr lawyers you bet they could make that case on some level.

Problem is, OpenIV has nothing to do with 'em. It's script mods using bypasses and injectors causing the issues. Rockstar/TakeTwo totally missed their target, unless they intend to drive more people to GTA O.

I know but tell that to the idiots at T2! Good Luck

That certainly would make for an interesting class action suit but as far the suits who would represent it, that would remain to be seen.

Which leads me to a semi related question, what's the deal with Script Hook not working with the latest RPH release? Any idea, and could this be the end of Script Hook working with GTA? Could Rockstar have released this latest update in conjunction with shutting down modding altogether?

T2 is doing nothing illegal by doing this; it's a dick move to be sure, but it's perfectly within their legal boundaries to do so. Your rights are not being infringed upon either.

A better legal argument would be that T2 is infringing upon education (however informal it may be), because personally I knew practically nothing about policing when I started playing LSPDFR. After playing for roughly a year and a half, I know how a ton of stuff works; MDTs, ALPRs, I can identify lightbars at a glance for the most part, I've learned a ton about flash patterns and how important they are, a bit of report writing, tactics, procedures, I've learned ten codes, as well as just code itself (code 2, code 3, code 6, etc.) Plus, I've learned a bit of computer handiwork on the side from editing things like Custom Backup and other various meta files and things like that.

Apart from the computer stuff, what I've learned through playing and watching LSPDFR on YouTube will make my life that much easier in the future when I become a cop. I had plans to introduce LSPDFR into my campus' Criminal Justice curriculum for future officers to mess around with, and T2 is stifling that to the best of their ability because their leadership wants to use $100 bills for toilet paper. And that, more than anything else about this whole debacle, is what really pisses me off.

The Overall Steam rating is now 'Mixed' and the petition is just over 40k, so they are hopefully coming to understand not to touch our mods. I mean they can take @Lundy's mods, just not the rest.

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

I would expect to see a response from T2 and R* in the next week. Assuming they have also seen a notable decrease in sales of the title as well as shark cards which I think is very likely. At some level I think they know they have caused irretrievable damage as many people will not change/remove their reviews. If they do fix this I will make sure to change my review to positive but  I only think 50% of the people will do that which will still leave them in a massive review hole.

Has Alexander Blake released any comment on the modding scene yet, as at this rate, ScriptHookV won't be updated.

Don't start rumours. ScriptHookV has no part in this situation. Unless Blade makes a statement, we are waiting for his update.

ScriptHookV and RPH are completely independent of each other. ScriptHook is not working with the latest GTA update, which is normal. It will need to be updated like usual, and we are just waiting for the author to do so.

Damn. Haven't been here for quite a long time. I don't have much time and passion to play anymore. Just read it by chance at 4player.de

This is indeed very very sad. To be honest, I wasn't really suprised. I remember a statement were Take 2 or Rockstar said something like they would do anything to protect GTA:O from cheating and hacking. Altough OpenIV hasn't something directly to do with cheating or hacking (my opinion), it seems that they (R*, T2) target such modifications. And unfortunately they don't give a shit if you can play online with it or not. I certainly hope that they won't target projects like LSPDFR, ragehook and all that stuff. I wish the developers and the community all the best and I hope you'll keep developing such great modifications like LSPDFR.

Cheers!
