Featured Replies

Hello everyone that are reading this article!

In case that I will have on my PC some sort of very important files, I would like to protect them from Internet's danger. I was thinking about antyvir software, and what I heard thath all tops free antyvirs softwares are pretty good. I decided to ask You for a advice; What type of antyvirus You recommend for me? I would like to use thath very known in Internet community. If You are owner of free software of that kind, You can share with me Your opinion about it. If You have any suggestions about what I should know about antyviruses (sorry about repeating this word), You also will be welcome by me in this topic.

  • I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (click to go to the download page). It is an excellent all-round antivirus package. It comes with all of the essential things to keep your computer safe.

I never had a problem on my two previous computers (which means... around 9 years of use) with AVG antivirus, and right now I'm using Microsoft Essentials since 2 years, never had a problem either.

Please note: The above is only for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Microsoft Security Essentials comes with Windows 8 and up by default - it is called "Windows Defender".

Norton 360 is a great anti-virus software. Just beware that it slows your system down like a motha-fucka. I'm not kidding, it will slow your system down significantly. I have been using it for the past few years though and it's outstanding!

I hear norton is a big pile of shit, use avast or McAfee

I personally use Norton, which I have no issues with. I can be playing a game and not slow down at all if I am doing a full system check. With McAfee on the other hand, it caused mad performance issues on my PC.

None. They are all terrible. They dump the concept of detecting malware for poor quality heuristics with high false positive rates.

You can use these sites to get an idea which is the least terrible for the month:

http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

http://www.av-test.org/en/compare-manufacturer-results/

Then when it auto-updates or nags you to update, you can check again to find which one should replace it now that it has been "improved" by the developers.

You are using the WRONG right theme!

Ya I agree. My brother used Norton and he still got plenty of viruses, I use Microsoft Security Essentials and am just fine

Liberty City, a place where the medics are more lethal than the murderers

In about 7 years of use, I've only had 2 pieces of malware (adware). Point is, if you're smart, you won't need AV. Unless you download copious amounts of sketchy porn, or frequent P2P sites to download, you shouldn't have to worry. Just download smart and don't be an idiot.

I used Norton for over 10 years now and never had a problem.

On this latest computer I built I decided not to install Norton due to people claiming it slows down their PC. So this time I am sticking with Microsoft Security Essentials and so far I have had no problems. Of course I also take precautions to minimize my risk; I don't visit sketchy sites, I am cautious of what and where I download things from, and I don't torrent or pirate anything.

Nothing. If I somehow get a virus or adware or anything, I hunt it the fuck down and destroy every smidgen of it. It's worked for me quite well.

But really, I'm just really cautious on the internet and I'm about prevention rather than fixing it after the fact. And I have gotten adware before, and it was really horrible, but I managed to hunt it down and kill it (it wasn't as simple as right-clicking and pressing "delete") but not many people like this option (or simply aren't able to choose it) and prefer something simpler, which is usually antivirus. The two main antivirus programs that I know of are McAfee and Norton and as mentioned above, they both seem to do the job fine. No anti-virus for me though, I have friends who always complain about it, and my method of prevention works great.

I use a combination of the following;

Avast AntiVirus.

Spybot Search and Destroy.

Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

Common Sense/Defensive Computing.

Cheers.

Yes, but part of prevention is having that software that can also update your virus and spyware definitions. That way when you go to a website or download something the software can look at it and tell you that it is a virus or spyware. What you are describing is not prevention at all, you are reacting to a virus or adware that gets onto your computer. Being cautious on the internet is only part of prevention, good anti-virus software is the other half.
