OpenIV discontinued | Take Two claims game modding "illegal"

Message added by Cyan

Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

Message added by Original Light

Please don't upload or share versions of OpenIV - we don't have permission from the OpenIV team to host their work on our community.

This won't stop people modding GTA V, especially with so many copies of OpenIV still available. It will stop some people buying GTA VI, if there ever is one, though.

I never played the default stories for GTA games anyway, just downloaded completed saved games or ignored them completely.

Would it be legal or feasible for the Open IV team to release their source code?

I know not many people will be interested in this but this is my own opinion about this, just putting it out there.

•This is what Rockstar Games said:

"Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players."

My opinions.

I've been part of the modding community with many different accounts for god knows how long, probably since 2010ish. I'm very used to the flow of modding. I have never heard that OpenIV support any mods that can ''harass'' other players in GTA Online. Even if they did it's not fair that the whole program gets shut down without any inspection. Take-Two are clearly out of their minds on this one. If Take-Two can work something out with the OpenIV team that will save the modding community the hassle of creating a new program but for now all we can do is support OpenIV all we possibly can and fucking shit on Take-Two. Modding will never die, even if OpenIV never comes back there will be another program like it. We're not gonna let this happen that easily.

Are T2 the boss of R*? Cos, I am sure that R* did not want this, as they haven't even said anything about modding being bad (other than GTA:O oc). So would R* be able to do anything here?

Rockstar is wholly owned by Take-Two. Even if they weren't, Rockstar doesn't own any of the GTA IP; Take-Two is the copyright holder, and doesn't need to ask Rockstar's permission before suing or not suing someone for violating it.

I think I speak for most of the texture artists, scripters and vehicle modders here...

I have faith in the OpenIV team will work to some conclusion that's a compromise between them and rockstar. Take 2 can just go shove it where the sun don't shine. When will this be? I'm not sure but there's plenty of offline versions of OpenIV and reverted versions of GTA 1032 online for the meantime. All you have to do is look.  Good luck on your future GTA endeavors.

Take-Two has to be involved. Rockstar doesn't get to decide who can do what with GTA V; that's Take-Two's prerogative as the copyright owner.

I didn't realize how much LSPDFR meant to me until I saw the message. As is the case with all of us, I sure hope it stays. But either way, this is a brutal way to have things put into perspective. All you guys are the reason this has been so enjoyable for me, so whether you've offered advice on support posts or created models or scripts, thank you all.

I can completely relate to this

Can everyone chill with the low-effort "fuk T2" mods? Look, I'm pissed too. And for a brief period of time, the protest mod was wonderful. It was a statement. But now, the novelty's been killed, stomped on, violated, given syphilis, thrown in a ditch, and called mean names. Now everyone and their dog is making a "FUK T2" mod in some way or another. And this would be fine, if any of them had any effort put into it. They're all pretty much the same, just the T2 logo with either one of those crossed red circles over it or some form of profanity. And somehow, everyone piles on the praise just because "fuck T2". We're about to be up to our testicles in low effort garbage. If you wanna make a protest mod, maybe something that causes T2's lawyers' computers to spontaneously combust would be a good start instead of polluting the downloads section.

but idk

I just found out about this and all I can say is BoyCott the rat bastards,  They claim it is taking away from GTA online revenues, what a load, if they are so damned greedy that modding is interfering with their making money from something that  is free to play in the first place, they know where they can go!

I agree, in a way. I would really love to see some form of organized resistance, beyond the whole petition thing. Also hopeful elements of the media catches onto this and have a closer look. Stuff like you mentioned had it's shock value, but something bigger and better would give it new life.

Still, even if they put 'em mods out... They're right. Fuck 'em.

I spent 2 years modding this game and am very disappointed.  I have even heard that the file name extensions are going to be changed so that OpenIV will not work at all.  IDK if that is true.   I feel that T2 is shooting themselves in the foot, by trying to make more money, they will lose out in the end as more people become frustrated.  You think any offline modder is going to go online and give you money after modding was taken away from them?

Shouldn't happen. It'd be more trouble than it's worth tbh

I don't think it's an over reaction, it could turn into a domino effect, consider the fact that many modders players upload videos to Youtube what happens if Youtube I.E. Google says nope it's illegal now and we don't want you uploading any more modded videos?

Nothing changed in terms of the legality of modding. Google is not involved at all and most likely would not involve themselves in this. If anything, Take Two would abuse the content ID system to remove videos using mods, but I seriously doubt that would ever happen.

Something seriously needs to be cleared up: Take Two does not and cannot make laws. They did not make modding "illegal." No one will ever be arrested for modding their game. Why GooD-NTS used the term "illegal" is beyond me, probably just for publicity.

That is what I'm thinking... He was just upset that he had to shutdown or else, and knew that saying illegal would help make the backlash such that Take Two might listen.... Might...

We CAN still use openIV we CAN still mod and use mods. I think it's time we got over it! The best way of putting our middle finger up at T2 is doing what we do best, enjoy modding the game. T2 is more than welcome to come and get me if that is what they want to do but I think they have better things to do like think of the next way to upset its declining fanbase!

Yeah, except you only assume what he means, but can't know for sure.

But sharing that image out of context is a nice smear tactic, I'll give you that.

I'm not trying for any tactics bro... Just trying to get a whole picture. Saying I'm trying to do one thing or another is an assumption gone too far...

It's not too far to assume that they couldn't open source it because it had some of Rockstars code, and thus being illegal to distribute or make open source. I'm not for or against anymore. I care about sp modding (as I've stated about starting sparkV). But I also like to piece things together... Also, that image is how it was on Twitter, I have no idea what the whole conversation looked like, as I didn't snippet that conversation...

Well I hope your right, nevertheless while modding may still be legal, you have to admit that the tool that is used for modding is no longer available by a legal cease and dissist order and nothing has been said about further action beyond the makers and distributors of OpenIV but you have to have wonder if they are serious enough to make the prevention of distribution and use of OpenIV a priority?

What I get from this is he is saying that something is not kosher about OpenIV and because it's not they can not or will not release the source code.

I really wonder what it was... I swear if I was a Dev, I would of leaked the source code out... There is no way I couldn't of...
