OpenIV discontinued | Take Two claims game modding "illegal"

Message added by Cyan

Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

Message added by Original Light

Please don't upload or share versions of OpenIV - we don't have permission from the OpenIV team to host their work on our community.

Not necessarily. Like I said: this stuff is jurisdiction-dependent. EULAs are a type of contract called a "contract of adhesion," which are heavily disfavored in quite a number of places. Likewise, many countries have rules governing the sale of goods, rules which might plausibly prevent this sort of arrangement (at least not without more notice than a long take-it-or-leave-it contract that it is expected most people do not read).

While it's true it's jurisdiction dependent, companies like Rockstar and Take Two have plenty of money to put towards lawyers who will write their EULA that will actually protect them from issues like this. Rockstar definitely isn't stupid and would definitely have taken political differences into consideration when writing the EULA for the game. It may not be necessarily illegal for people to modify code (and has been proven with the iOS jailbreak/unlock issue), Rockstar has the right to pursue those who violate their EULA and discontinue services to violators, if they decide not to pursue legally.

It is sketchy, but the OpenIV team aren't nitwits.  They wouldn't be complying if they thought the cease and desist was a joke, or from some disgruntled dude.  So whoever sent it had verification of who they were and what was to happen.

This is more likely part of a much bigger picture, such as the port of Liberty City in GTAV or it could be complete bullshit, which isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

So does this mean they're gonna make OpenIV not work for the people who didn't uninstall it?

Perhaps. But my guess, at a first read, would be that the game will update and we'd get all of the vanilla cars and physics and weapons and stuff back into our games.

7This is so sad, i have just recently start modding and have a pack that me and my friends put a lot of time in and now we can't mods anymore. Here is a good idea to keep this running. Play the crack version on skidrow and download an older version of rph there are a lot of those reupload on the internet. Remember to check for viruses when using

I was thinking the same exact thing. This all seems to come at a very suspicious time, with no real context to why all of a sudden this has become an issue (in terms of needing a cease and desist letter)  for Take-Two.

That too. Why now, after all this time? Like Deputy Rourke mentioned, I don't think they are nitwits, but there has to be more than to what is being told. I just don't know. We may never know what really happened.

I have my skepticism about this information

1) Who is Alex?

2) Why are GTA Developers wasting time and money changing files or adding new files, especially because "Gunrunners" was rumored to be the last, or very close to being the last DLC?

3) Ventertainment has but one follower and 3 reputation. While I'm not saying everyone has to have a gazillion followers to be correct, there is almost no context to this note, and no one knows the person who posted, and even if some do, he isn't a big name creator or content moderator like Cyan, Rappo, or any other reputable person in the community.

4) Why is Take-Two personally messaging members of the community to notify them of this change? They didn't notify anyone of this supposed C&D (Which I also have doubts about). Why do it now?

I personally don't think it is 100% about the OpenIV program due to the fact they have been around for years. I think it has something to do with the GTA 5 Liberty City, which the OpeniV team was creating. This map was rumored to being close to completion.

I know a lot of you'll around here are children and don't remember this, but this is similar to the Y2K scare - and we survived that. Yes, this is bad, but everyone needs to chill out and relax. This community is very large and filled with very intelligent people, modding isn't going anywhere and I am more than certain we will find ways to adapt.

Yes, I think this is the most important point that has been said.

Over the next few hours and days, people are going to speculate wildly about the future of both Open IV and GTA V in general. People need to relax. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

Yes, I saw the forum topic, but it still provides little to no context for this message from Take-Two to this random GTA modder (If that's who Alex is). And he seems to be speculating that "entitled gta standard online pricks" ratted out the community when R* has been more than aware of this and other communities for years. I think this dude is just vying for attention.

Yeah if people are worried about LSPDFR then I suggest waiting till the creators of LSPDFR officially say something about it. Ragepluginhook is still up and even if LSPDFR stops we always have FiveM.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that take2 has previously tried several times  to take down FiveM but failed. Seems like FiveM is still willing to fight

Very true. But my whole concern over the legitimacy of this supposed attack on OpenIV is why did R* send a C&D to them over a week ago, and nothing to FiveM (Which actually messes with Online shit) over the same course of time. It is all very suspicious to me.

Remain skeptical everyone.

In the past they successfully took down many multiplayer mods, or made them unusable. FiveM somehow avoided that (For now)

I get your point but at the same time we don't know if FiveM received it or not. They very well could have received one but are willing to duke it out in court. But again WE don't know, I suspect more info will come out in next couple of days.

Maybe, but it would be an awful choice financially and legally for them to fight this in court (And we can be pretty certain that other mods such as Ragehook haven't received anything like this as they've put out updates since the C&D was said to have been sent). Fighting the legal battle would probably drag out thousands in legal fees alone. Nevermind an actual ruling. I know many people are saying "Well no judge will look at this and actually treat it as a real case." That's simply not the case. This is a copyright lawyer's dream case; people blatantly violating a EULA (Which is not necessarily legally binding in some jurisdictions, but can be enforced) and posting about it on the internet.
