Do US police have panic buttons?

Featured Replies

In the UK, police have panic buttons on their radio which causes all radio traffic but their own to cease and for 7 seconds the officer's mic is open for everyone to hear. It also alerts dispatch who then locates the officer and sends everyone there.

Do the US have this sort of system in place?

  • Yes. Also, some newer technology alerts dispatch when the quick release for racked shotguns and rifles is pressed.

  • Tip of advice...dont press the red button

  • That would be a great feature. Either the officer is in danger and needs backup, or he's overreacting and needs backup to diffuse the situation.

They are also trying to do something like that but for their sidearm and taser. When an officer pulls taser or weapon, dispatch is notified.

Hardly any do. It's expensive to do that and very complicated with all the different configurations and tie-ins from municipality dispatch, county dispatch, and in some cases the State Police dispatch.

its expensive my local pd has 12 officers. they just recently got patrol rifles which were old army a2's. they dont have radar(thats because of state law i think). they want to upgrade their crown vics to chargers. we bought 3 chargers back in 2013. it will take time but i think it might become standard in big city pd's but not local like mine.

chargers aren't upgrades lol.  My loal PD just dumped their barely one year rokd chargers due to lack of reliability and size.

Actually I don't know of any agency that doesn't have a panic button on their radio. Unless you are referring to the shotgun rack thing.

Why do you need to say he is overreacting? Why not just say "if an officer draws his pistol he needs backup" does it matter what the reason is? I feel like this is just another one of your comments about how police are out of control today except not in so many words.

Almost no agency in SC has panic buttons.  Also most departments in Georgia and NC. The state agency don't have any. Not sure about municipalities or counties for those states.

Why do you need to bring that argument into this thread? Stick to topic.

I find that surprising, never heard of an agency without a panic button.

I just find it irritating that every topic about law enforcement that he comments on he always has something negative to say. He always has to slip some kind of comment in that paints law enforcement in a bad light even if the topic being discussed has nothing to do with it.

Yeah, our county doesn't have them either.

Most agencies panic button is stating "10-18" or "step it up, code 3" over the radio if you're covert about it. Others will literally just scream "need assistance/backup":

Right, that is the obvious but the panic button (at least in the agencies in my area) is for when you don't have time to key up on the radio or you can't because someone else is already keyed up. Usually the if the panic button is pressed it means you are in so much trouble that you can't even key up on the radio to tell someone.

I think some of you are confusing what panic buttons are. Every (portable) radio I've ever used and seen has a panic button. It may not be as sophisticated or widely used (GPS,Open mic, etc) but it sends a tone to dispatch and tells them what radio sent the alert. Red/orange button on the radio.

Again, some departments might not USE it but they have it. The system I have seen and is widely used by me is this: https://youtu.be/9xJV1B9jdvo?t=1m30s
