Whats with all the recent police shootings?

Featured Replies

In Henderson, Nevada a police officer was shot yesterday. Luckily he survived.

On the Boston police twitter page within the last few weeks they have been posting pics of several seized guns from various arrests and traffic stops.
That's a lot in a short period of time.

it's human nature. people do bad things to society and themselves. good people get hurt in the process. the question shouldn't be "why are police getting shot" it should be "what are the government officials going to do to further prevent these events".

in the words of Mahatma Gandhi "You must be the change you wish to see in the world". do your part as a citizen and elect officials who act with change rather than talk about it.

It's a question that quite simply can't be answered.

People do this stuff to become famous at the end of the day. Unlike working hard to become a legendary filmstar, they can just pick up a few rifles and start shooting at innocent bystanders- generally they will target schools as they will receive the most coverage. It's disgusting, but true.

BTW, America always had more maniacs than other countries (at least those which have statistics available). There's something strange about it, really. And those shooting - where else they are so frequent?

I honestly don't know what's going on.

I'm thankful that i'm joining the police force in Australia.. in my state (Tasmania) there hasn't been a police death in other 10 years (in the late 90's actually)

Even with 500,000 people it's still pretty good. we do have our fair share of crap. a couple months ago there was a police pursuit involving two teens, they crashed their car and opened fire upon police officers.

The death of police officers in Australia itself is extremely low, in 2013 there were only 3 officers killed.

@OP: With lots of things like this (e.g. suicides), one instance can serve as a trigger to cause more instances. People who would, in the abstract, like to shoot cops normally don't do that, but it's possible that reading news stories about other people who shot cops would make them bolder.

At first I thought it was just that the media was covering more shootings, but it's not. Officers being killed by gunfire has risen 53% since this time last year.

I did not make that 53% figure up. sauce below.

It's pretty obvious that America is screwed and I accept that fact. I am an American and I have been told that by many people.

That is because US is the third largest population in the world, roughly 5x the population of the largest European country.  I bet that the per-capita ratio of major crimes is lower than most European countires...not sure, just a hunch...too lazy to look it up right now.  I can tell you that over the last 20-25 years, major crime rates are down by almost 50% here in the US.

Also, the laimstream media are providing cover for this reprobate president, so they report on anything else possible to keep the idoit masses distracted....shootings get large ratings too, so much more exposure is given to those incidences than things that actually matter and effect your life.

I live in Naperville Illinois, the Naperville Police Department had only 2 police shootings and no officers killed in the line of duty :D

I rode along with them last week on Tuesday with a Sergeant. Felt incredible

It does see weird. And not just shootings; In the last week or two, just on LCPDFR.com alone, there were a handful of events. The prison break in Canada by helicopter. Then the 2 Canadian cops shot. The LVMPD officers that were shot, as well as the school shooter. To me that seems irregular. People are going more and more mad it seems.

Nah, unfortunately, it's not even that. China is the most populated, then goes India, then USA. Wiki says  7 'most notable' serial killers were convicted in PRC. 10 in India. And like ten times more in USA.

These are only those who convicted and captured. You can imagine how many are on the loose and how many cases are closed.

Also, I hate when people say 'it's media fault those shootings have so much attention!' I live in Russia and work in law enforcement and we have a very high crime rate and many unsolved murders. But I can remember only two shootings, and it was something really disturbing. What I am trying to say, is that if there's only one school shooting, this is a tragedy and something is really wrong with people.

Yes, China, India and the US for largest population.  We do have high profile events, seems like a lot of them, but those are one in a million (or greater) events.  More people win the Mega Millions than run into a serial killer, or mass murderer.  Just sensationalized...nothing more.

I mean serial killers are hard to capture, as are very intelligent if not extremely sly and charismatic.  Russia, India and most other nations simply don't have the resources (i.e: money, equipment, talent) to track and nail these guys; we (the US) does.

In this case perception is not reality my friend.

If I understand you correctly, you're implying China cops are so bad they only captured 7 high-profiles killers over several centuries?))

Well as I see you misunderstood my post. Russia has resources, thanks god. We do not have shootings. School, college, cop shootings - nothing of it. There are criminals, but no one can even think of going to the school and killing children.
