Everybody in all walks of life, this killings must stop. I value life more than anything and the fact that taking a police officer's life over the FEELINGS of the two recent police shootings is UNACCEPTABLE.
May god be in their prayers! Please bless them and acknowledge in your condolences.

I happen to live where it happened (and by that I don't mean the city, but the location of the attack), so I heard everything: shots fired, saw people running away in every directions, vehicles driving wrong way street to go away, it was total chaos, not mentioning the ambulances that kept going between the scene, and hospitals. It was somehow quiet, fireworks was very nice, and all the sudden, you hear people yelling, and all PD responding to the scene, as well as EMS, sirens were on all night.
TV crew was on scene fast, and interviewed a father, who was sitting next to his dead wife and baby bodies, there are also many videos on youtube showing the next minutes following the attack and all the bodies laying on the ground.
This morning, when I got out, all streets leading to the "promenade des anglais" are closed with cops on every single one of them, they left the truck and dead bodies until around noon, today. You can still see all the trash thrown by people in the panic, destroyed bench, and lamp poles.
Here is a video I recorded, people left flowers, one was singing.

Most of my extended families are currently living in Orlando and they assured me that they are safe (thank god). I just came back from Florida just four weeks ago including Orlando.
My uncle owns a shop very close to the pulse nightclub shooting. He is a concealed carry applicant and my cousin advised me this morning that his bringing ALL of his five handguns (which I've seen personally) to his business, including his backup handgun on his ankle, his 45 in his vehicle glove compartment, and a 357 magnum under his store desk.
People will go straight to blaming the lack of gun control. With stricter gun laws, people will still find a way to own them illegally, and gun violence will go on. That being said I find it tragic and frightful that the community faces this, and that the nation is looking at one of the worst mass shootings in US History. I honestly not just sure that stricter gun laws are the solution. They are only just an inconvenience to the law-abiding, potentially responsible owners while illegal gun users/owners run free, doing damage before they're killed or prosecuted.
UPDATE: My uncle has made the decision to close down his store today due to safety reasons which I completely encourage him to do, despite the fact my cousin told me his business is only five minutes from the Pulse shooting. For anyone currently living in Orlando, please stay safe including your loved ones.

wteoh1 reacted to DivineHustle in Worst mass shooting in US historySeems like we've reached that point in debate where we continue to go around in circles. Usually happens when a point has been proven and can't be logically debated any further. I will drop out of the thread until a new, valid argument is presented.
Great discussion everyone!

wteoh1 got a reaction from MayhemMercenary in Worst mass shooting in US historyFYI guys, I'm from the Chicagoland area near the city of Chicago. Despite having the strictest laws and laws from the city of Chicago, they have 1000 shootings a week, 483 been shot in 2015. If you read my post above, anti-gun laws aren't going to help but stir more politics and unnecessary drama in our society.

wteoh1 reacted to Lee10 in Worst mass shooting in US historyA lot of people here are saying that more people have guns so that shootings like this are prevented, sorry I'm just not down with this, what should happen is that people who do qualify to carry guns, we need to make sure that those folks are adequately trained, and knowledgeable about their gun.
Also so this is very sad, I hope all the families can recover from this.
-
wteoh1 reacted to DivineHustle in Worst mass shooting in US historyYou've completely missed the concept, which people always seem to do. The point is that a shooter isn't going to shoot a place up when, not even everyone, simply a few others have guns and are trained to use them. There's a reason why Chicago, a city with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, has some of the worst gun violence in the nation.
-
wteoh1 reacted to DivineHustle in Worst mass shooting in US historyI'm not disagreeing with you man, what you're saying is absolutely correct. Our society has become so basic and simple-minded that we don't care to explore any solutions to problems. We think that we can just pass a law and everything will fix itself, and it's really not that simple.
-
wteoh1 got a reaction from DivineHustle in Worst mass shooting in US historyIt does not matter how many security details a nightclub has whether they are sworn off-duty officers or not. Plus I know some police agencies across the US disallow officers to moonshine at nightclubs by policy.
It's extremely unfortunate for two shooting events in the beautiful city of Orlando also in regards to a singer who was shot and killed in Orlando yesterday.
Even if guns weren't invented a thousand years ago. People will still continue to find a way to attack, hurt, and kill each other. Shootings in the UK are extremely low since firearms are entirely banned vs. the US statistics, however, even some thugs are able to obtain firearms.
Gun laws are enacted partly due to the pressure of anti-gun advocate groups and the political pressure the lawmakers have to face.
EVEN if guns were banned entirely in the US as of now, we will still continue to have some gun violence because guns that people currently own and that are still out there won't simply disappear like a ghost and fade away once the complete ban on guns gets signed into law.
It really stinks this senseless gun killing will always go on. It give us gun owners and law abiding citizens a bad name.
I do agree that not EVERYONE should own a firearm. It requires a huge amount of mental discretion, responsibility, composure, and bravery. Firearms are our last line of defense, NOT a tool of leverage, or a tool for retaliation. Imagine if another shooting was to take place. You would have to draw your firearm to put down the attacker in amidst of the chaos that surrounds, such as, people running, and the screaming crowd desperately trying to find safety.
Going to be a bit off but the law enforcement society is continuing to be chastised by politics and public opinions instated by news agencies as many good police officers properly doing their jobs, no one is ever appreciate what Orlando PD, Orange County Sheriff, and the several law enforcement agencies that came to save countless lives of the Pulse Shooting.
Pardon for all my rants, I constantly feel our society is getting dumber and simple minded.

wteoh1 reacted to Ersteman in 1 firefighter dead, another injured in shootingThis is not all that uncommon... I am a former Paramedic in RL ( and yes briefly an L.E.O. I just in RL hated it.. Medic is more me.. ) We used to encounter all sorts of issues with civilians, be it rage, outright hostility and once I even had a full drug bag stolen at gun point.. ( I guess they learned that the drug bags are not where what they are after is stored.. ) not here anyway.
I ve had more than a few calls where the situation was so bad that we had to pull out until L.E. arrived.. and even worse ( ? ) I once had to use a real gangbanger I knew from previous calls for his family to chill his posse out.
As far as breakdown of agencies.. that really just matters where you are.. Here the large cities have both F.D. ran ones.. and the county ones. Some of the smaller areas or rural counties use not only County ( normally very small and more often than not rely heavily on volunteers ) and private companies with a mutual aid agreement in place. Also the lowest paying job in any form of Emergency Service on average.. Being in EMS often puts you in harms way... with little pay and often zero benefits. This is also why the turn over is so high.. that and you really have no hope for ever being promoted. You really only have two options... front of the truck.. back of the truck.. But the ones that stay.. stay because we care about the job.
** Thought just for info I would expand this a bit.. My first EMS job as an EMT paid $8.50 to start with no benefits until 90 day probationary was over. After that it went up to a whopping $9.00 with Self Pay Benefits.. not including any EMS charges.. those were free as long as they were in County Service use.. When I became a Medic.. being much more in demand of course.. I took a position making $10.50 with partial pay benefits.. then took all the advanced courses ( at my cost of course ) to not only be more in demand and a better Medic.. but get paid more. My final County years started me at $14.75 with supplemented benefits.. however I was one of only 4 Medics in the county. We worked 24 or 72 hour shifts.. and only two on duty for the whole County at any time.. with only 4 stations in the county. The other 2 stations were Basic Trucks.. meaning crewed by EMT's or one EMT and a First Responder Driver. Often I worked with a non EMT First Responder myself. Off duty we were expected to keep a stocked out bag in our POV and we had E Packs on POV's ( your own car ) like any volunteer Firefighter would.. I cant count the number of times I had to run an intercept in my car to meet an Ambulance for Medic Support in route to a Hospital.. closest Hospital ground transport at Code was still 45 mins from the center of the County.. don't even ask if out in the boondocks..
Don't even like to think about the times I had to standby.. knowing that people needed help.. and could not really do anything until Fire or Law were on scene.. Reinforced by the fact that if I got hurt trying to help.. no one else was able to come.. sleep with those memories.
EMS is a sad state overall. Everywhere from what I have learned in the US. But how to fix it? Money? Sure.. but who pays? Most of my patients had no money anyway.. and no insurance.. Counties that are so small and can only afford 4 Medics at just $14.. how do they get more? It's a struggle to keep the drugs stocked.. not to mention the trucks running.
Then as I said.. it's hard to keep staff.. the money is awful. The hours horrid. The danger real. Zero promotion chance.. I stayed because I loved it. But I also had already retired from the Army.. so how do you keep people in the field??

Detroit is royally screwed. People just don't want to move back to Detroit, there's no incentive.
-
wteoh1 reacted to unr3al in 1 firefighter dead, another injured in shootingI'm under no illusions that Detroit will ever be "fixed". There will be no rebirth, despite inspirational songs/videos from residents.
Not much of a rap fan, but that's actually pretty good. (Thanks, Ubisoft. 'The Crew' is underrated.) All filmed on location.

wteoh1 reacted toDeactivated Memberin 1 firefighter dead, another injured in shootingWhat did I just watch...
An ambulance stranded in the streets of a big American city. AUTOMATIC GUNFIRE echoing through the block, and nobody seems to give a flying f**k. "So we are here in our broken down ambulance, with somebody shooting an automatic rife (Which BTW if was to happen in any other city would get a full terrorism response) but there are no cops around. Oh and someones baby is dying from cardiac arrest. Just another night I guess."
I think Detroit EMS should get guns because it looks like there aren't enough cops anyway! Can somebody please explain to me why people were literally shooting in the streets on new years eve?
On topic, I believe that if there is a need for EMS to be armed with ASP's, spray, taser etc. in one specific area, go for it! If your average Joe can own a gun, surely a person trained in maintaining a safe, calm and clear situation WHILE saving someone's life can handle force. But as I said, don't go around arming them for the hell of it. You don't want to take away the job of a police officer.
I could never be an EMT because I couldn't handle seeing people with really bad injuries as my job, but to those who can and do save people everyday, deserve to feel safe when they do it because none of us would survive without them!
-
wteoh1 reacted to unr3al in 1 firefighter dead, another injured in shootingYup I mentioned the new fleet of vehicles and (few) new hires earlier. The city still has a long way to go.
I highly agree that EMS should have some kind of self defense available to them besides their fists and feet. But I'm not sure I'd want them clearing out a dangerous scene. That's not their job.
