Obama To Propose Free Community College Program

Featured Replies

Well well look at this..This is incredible news. Education is one of the biggest things a country can invest in its people.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Thursday announced a proposal that President Barack Obama said would make community college "free for everybody who is willing to work for it." But administration officials provided no details about the program's costs or where the money would come to pay for it.

Obama planned to formally announce the plan Friday at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee. He gave a preview in a videotaped message shot aboard Air Force One and posted on Facebook.

"It's not just for kids," Obama said. "We also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits."

LMAO! Now are you able to logically elaborate on what you mean?    ?

Call me a bit of a pessimist, but I do hope that this does not somehow backfire and make the associate's degree akin to the high school diploma, subsequently decreasing the perceived importance of the bachelors and masters degrees to employers seeking out prospective candidates, and then forcing people into paying a hefty sum for even higher education.

"Obama be like 'I 'da king!'"

Great idea in theory, but as somebody stated above, it decreases the value of a 2 yr degree.

Although I HIGHLY doubt it'll get through congress. Those Rep. have an axe to grind with Obama.

I think its a step in the right direction and we are behind on alot of social issues. However i dont think it will really underscore the impact a degree has on finding gainful employment. Most jobs require at least a bachelors degree even for some entry level jobs. So i don't think paying for everyone to get their A.A degree is going to effect that. If you want that bachelors degree your gonna have to go through 2 more years of school and find a way to pay for it.

And keep in mind there will still be people that never go to College after High School or who start and never finish for whatever reason. I think it will really give some people a hand up who wouldn't be able to afford to go to College and hopefully they are successful and can find a way to pay to further their education.

you really believe obama actually cares? and um whos going to pay for this? and btw obama is merely a puppet in case some people still live in a cave its not like he hates this country or anything

Actually according to approval polls he pretty bad. If you can't get at least half the country to approve, than you're bad.

He's jacked up a lot of policies and blatantly disregards the Constitution. Take your pick: immigration, health care, middle east, foreign policy, etc. (or my personal favorite, saluting.)

Although this was more of a rhetorical post, don't wanna get off topic.

Eh i can understand, now that you mention it, do you remember a news story awhile back about Obama hopping off of Marine one and not saluting the troops who there  properly.

I personally don't think it's a good move, as others have stated it's just gonna decrease the value of a 2 year degree. So jobs might do the same thing. A job that used to require only an associates degree, might now be only open to those with a bachelor's or master's. It's only gonna require people to go through even more schooling for the same jobs they would have gotten before with a GED imo. This isn't gonna happen now, but maybe in 10-20 years. But I'm just a kid so what do I know :geek:

I like the intent but as others have said, it could very well "devalue" associate's degrees, of which the effects snowball onto bachelor's and master's degrees. In some fields a bachelor's is already not enough, or at least has competition from those with a master's. I'm an economics major (considering a double major with political science) and I'm afraid grad school may be necessary for me at some point.

Yeah he was boarding the helicopter and didn't salute the Marine. He got back off the helicopter and shook the Marines hand and the Marine smiled.

If your first thought is "this will just devalue an associate's degree as a credential," I'm not sure you understand the purpose of education. Its signalling properties are supposed to be a side effect; there are actual benefits to further education that don't derive from signalling.

I don't quite understand what you mean, can you elaborate further?
