I noticed some of the newer LAPD patrol cars have two white boxes on each side of the light bar. I haven't been able to get close to it, but it looks like maybe a camera enclosure? They're kind of pointed at an angle off to each side. ALPR maybe?

in NY I saw them mounted on trunks, looks way better. 

Looks like an oversized pimple when it's on the lightbar like that.

Its a Departed Union Car, the plate readers are specific for catching wanted criminals.

We have them in my town except they're on the trunk.

I have differing opinions about LAPD cars.. They look so old, and this fits them so well. Looks like they tied old white IBM computers to the tops of their cars.

Out of all the ALPR models out there, and placements. They got the biggest and ugliests, and put them in the worst possible place. Lol

Do you think they care about how it looks? It is much more effective on the roof. All they care about is that it works, not if it looks good.

Why did you even post this, seriously? It's my opinion, not yours, and I think that they should be put at the back of the car rather than the front.

The ALPRs look sweet on the rear of the roof on my towns Explorers, I don't even like interceptor utilities that much.
