Should schools start later in the morning?

Featured Replies

This is a debated topic lots of scientists like to discuss. What are your thoughts guys, should schools start at a later time in the morning or should it remain how it is?

  • I go to school at 8:45am and get out at 3:45pm....wouldn't want to get out any later....if anything they should make school shorter.

If the start time were to change a few hours, then so would the end time. As much as I hate mornings, I like school ending at 2:54 PM.

That being said, I never have time for breakfast at home (I eat something before school starts though) and I only get about 5-6 hours sleep every week night.

We did this study in my psychology class, just an hour more does a huge difference as waking up at 6 is proven to cause sleep problems.

To receive a full nights sleep, you need about 7 hours. Waking up at 6 hurts your REM sleep as it is the last stage of sleep that is reached and is the stage that "fixes" you.

I would love to see my late start days become the normal. (School at 8:30 rather than 7:30)

I too like my school ending at 2:00 PM, so I not sure if I would want it to start later. I'm pretty much dead in the morning, but you get used to it after the first year. I have an addiction to caffeine because of the 7:25 start. My doctor said I'm actually addicted and I told her " You crazy!", and I splashed hot coffee in her face...I'm currently serving 5 yrs for aggravated assault.

On topic: My body's gotten used to waking up early and not eating until 12, but I physically can't go to sleep earlier. So I think it should stay. #CoffeeIsLife

In my opinion I like it the way it is, start time 7:00 end time 2:45, while I don't get seven to eight hours of sleep every night I still prefer the time to be that way. And you know topics you always get those 'well how much sleep should a person every night'? For those of you asking that question I recommend this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SVQlcxiQlzI

Ahhhh, my school gets out earlier 2:45 PM.

It's better to go in the morning come home in the afternoon then you've got the evening to relax.

The only time school starts late (here at least) is when it's snowy

If it helps kids do better in school then I guess I am for it. However, I also think having to wake up early does teach kids how to manage their time and prepares them for the real world. At my job I have to wake up and be in formation at 0630 every morning, do PT, and be at work by 0900 and usually work until 1700 (5PM). If I want to be productive and not be tired as hell at work then I have to go to sleep earlier whether I want to or not. Unlike school, you cannot just put your head down on your desk and sleep. I think the issue is more of kids not going to sleep by a reasonable time, if you went to bed by 9PM or 10PM you would be getting a full night of sleep.

When I was in high school I enjoyed having class end at 1:55 every day and when I was a senior we got to leave at 1PM. It was an awesome schedule, but it got way better when I went to college. Only 3-5 hours of class a day Tuesday through Thursday, yes please! I miss college so much, 4 day weekends every week and it was so laid back.

Enjoy what you have, it'll only get worse in the future in terms of amount of sleep and time spent away from home :P

On topic though; As Reibu said, starting later means leaving later. Me personally would not mind starting earlier to leave earlier.

Getting up at 5:45 so I can get to school before 7:30 is not nice. I always have to drink Red Bull of a strong coffee, no matter how much I sleep.

That being said, I only have lessons starting that early on Mondays and Fridays. On Thursdays and Tuesdays I have train at 8 AM and on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM :D

I like it being early in the morning, I get up at 7am - get into school by 8am then I finish at 2.15. Although I hate getting up in the mornings I enjoy getting out of school at 2.15, it just seems like the right time to finish at.

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

To have your guys' hours... I get up at 530 every morning, go to work & work until 7PM, that's my end time for the day but sometimes I'm out as late as midnight before I get home, even worse when I'm on call,, always a possibility I could start my shift at 7am-7PM but there be no end in sight.

That's what I am talking about. That is a proper day!

I will say this, I do like my school starting at 7:26am then ending at 2:03pm. So I would not be a fan of a later start time, being that I already have to get up at 6:00am to get ready to go. I barely have enough time to eat breakfast but drink a cup of coffee then go. I might not mind it if school would get out earlier instead, however later start times mean later release times, which I would hate in the winter.
