Why don't cops carry this?

Featured Replies

I've been watching pursuit videos and other felony stops, and I'm wondering why cops don't carry a little porcelain rock to break windows. I thought the porcelain breaking tempered glass was just a myth but it's true

I'm watching these videos and the cops finally stop the guy(or girl), and then they spend the next minute or 5 trying to break the window with their batons, kicking it, maybe shooting it(?), when all it takes is a little piece of porcelain.

In case you guys think this is a good idea, here's is my business plan:

Buy a failing chinaware shop for cheap

Fire half the workers to save cost

Idk how porcelain is made so I'll figure out make the porcelain into a a rectangular box and not jagged thing for officer safety

Pitch my idea to local departments, and then let the word spread. Creating a demo video on unsuspecting cars on the highway

EDIT: Price will be between 25 cents to a dollar, making my maximum profits about...$700,000-1,000,000( they will eventually need replacements) .__.

I'll call it Black Jesus's Window Breaker Upper(Trademark, copyright and all that bulls***)

Some knives have a glass breaker on the end along with some batons. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to Cary a bit of porcine though.

It's actually a lot harder to break car windows than many think; The ones in GTA are highly unrealistic as they shatter way too easily. There's a reason they don't shatter: You don't want that all over your body if you'd crash.

I agree that this would be a nifty thing to have as a complement attachment to a baton or similar.

It seems almost random sometimes, but I think there's a science to it. Example of randomness:

In order to effectively break glass on a window, you'll really need something more mechanical that can deliver more force than a thrown piece of porcelain. What causes the glass to break is down to a lot of force being applied to a small area. Tempered glass is good at taking a force and absorbing it out over the entire pane so it doesn't break, but this property makes it structurally unstable. If the sharp point of some porcelain (it has to be sharp, a blunt porcelain chunk won't work) hits the glass, it normally causes a little dent or crack in the glass, and because of how unstable the structure is, this dent is amplified and more of the glass becomes under stress, until the entire window just collapses in a mess.

What you'll be better off doing is creating some type of gun that fires sharp bits of porcelain at a window, its more reliable than throwing a chunk of it at the window and hoping a sharp part hits it with enough force.

Yeah, no kidding.

Oh my gosh, I saw that video, so funny.

That could be very useful. But it wouldn't always be possible to use. Say, for example, a pursuit comes to an end by a boxing manoeuvre meaning the suspect car is surrounded by police vehicles- the fact that the police vehicles would be side-by-side with the car would mean throwing anything would be rather difficult to do.

It's a nice idea though. Very cheap to manufacture and distribute to officers and clearly mighty effective.

Do you know how dangerous porcelain is..My brother worked on a construction site, he threw a porcelain toilet and it shattered, his arm got cut open from the shards. Just use a baton.

Indeed. But they're not throwing a toilet at the car, just a small piece.

Yeah, window punches would work better. I don't think it's even that uncommon for police to have; not only is it useful for things like this, it can also be useful for rescue (e.g. kid locked in a car on a hot day), and it's pretty small (would fit easily on a belt, let alone in a car.
