Going by the BBC, it sounds almost certain that it crashed.  There is an area of unrest in northern Mali (where the plane is thought to have crashed), but it's very unlikely the fighters had anything to do with this as they only have shoulder fired rockets.  In no way can those hit a plane travelling at 33,000+ feet.  The weather was pretty bad during their flight, and the plane's route was changed to avoid the weather.  The temperatures were recorded at -75C (-103F).  "Air Algerie says the aircraft's passenger list includes 50 people from France, 24 from Burkinabe, eight from Lebanon, four from Algeria and two from Luxembourg; one Belgian, one Swiss, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian, one Ukrainian and one Romanian."

OMG In my opinion war is going to break out over that plane being shot down. It is a real tragedy that the plane has gone down.

3 crashed/missing in a short time period (a couple months).. This is seriously why i don't fly anywhere.

I really hope that it's just missing and not crashed.. the two Malaysian airlines were enough for one year.

If you want to me reply as soon as possible, then either quote or @CouthInk4  me as i'll be notified, a general reply will not notify me

I'm not sure why people are talking about it as being shot down. I understand that MH-17 was shot down but because that was shot down it doesn't mean most other plane crashes happened due to it being shot down. Its quite obvious nobody knows the circumstances about the crash due to the Sky News title being "Passenger Plane Carrying 116 'Probably Crashed'"

There is so many reasons on why it could of crashed. It may of ran out of fuel, been hijacked, and other on-board technical problems which could of caused it.

I honestly doubt that a major war is going to break out over this. When I say major, I mean as in the United States vs. Russia. Maybe a small war, not sure. I don't have much knowledge on these type of politics.

One crashed because it flew over a war zone, one was from Africa, and the other one may have failed and crashed, but it may have also been hijacked. Also, I just want to point out that Malaysian airways is a seriously dodgy and poorly maintained airway.

Wait, so the simple fact that it was from Africa means that you're not surprised it may have crashed?

Less surprised, yeah.

I can't exactly say so persoanlly, but I my self don't assume the planes to be maintained to such a high quality as MEDCs.

The plane crashed in Africa but it is owned by a Spanish company. Not like that really matters, most planes are kept well maintained no matter what country. I doubt other countries would allow planes which may be unsafe to fly through their airspace.

Update:

According to Sky News the wreckage of the plane has been spotted in the Northern Mali desert.

Actually, there have been 3 civilian airline crashes in the last week. MH17, AH5017 and GE222, resulting in the loss of 462 people. This week is one of the worst weeks in civil aviation history. Scary stuff.

Even though aeroplane crashes can be quite scary, you are actually more likely to die driving to the airport that you are to die whilst in the air. To add on, 1985 is still the deadliest year for air crashes though.

Cheers.
