There are a multitude of excellent police-related movies out there.

I'd have to recommend "The Seven Ups (1973)", "The French Connection (1971)", as well as "Fort Apache: The Bronx (1981)".  Note that the Police Academy movies (1980s) are worth checking out too.

Technically a police movie, Lock Up is a pretty damn good film.

"Frank Leone (Sylvester Stallone) is nearing the end of his prison term for a relatively minor crime. Just before he is paroled, however, Warden Drumgoole takes charge. Drumgoole was assigned to a hell-hole prison after his administration was publicly humiliated by Leone, and has now arrived on the scene to ensure that Leone never sees the light of day."

Others are:

Copland (1997) - The sheriff of a suburban New Jersey community populated by New York City policemen slowly discovers the town is a front for mob connections and corruption.

Hot Fuzz (2007) - Jealous colleagues conspire to get a top London cop transferred to a small town and paired with a witless new partner. On the beat, the pair stumble upon a series of suspicious accidents and events.

I actually work at a movie store and a customer asked about cop movies. I'm making a list next time I work.

Hot Fuzz and End Of Watch are great. Hot Fuzz is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Can't go wrong with those two. End of Watch is a great cop drama. One of my favorite movies of 2013.

I know these aren't necessarily cop movies, but they have great chases:

Gone In 60 Seconds (Original film from the 70s. It's got a 60 minute chase)

Smokey and the Bandit

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned but the Dirty Harry movie series (1971-1988) is very good.

Badge 373 [1973] and Across 110th Street [1972] aren't bad either.  My personal favorite film, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three [1974], is a must though!

Classic movies, eh? Might as well throw in another good movie. Fort Apache, The Bronx. Definitely a nice movie about the corruption that thrived in the NYPD during the late 1970s and early 80s.

No one's gonna say Serpico (1973) with Al Pacino?

I liked Colors (1988) too, with al the LAPD and gangs stuff.

The taking of Pelham 123, the original from 1974, is pretty good too.

Heat (1995), Al Pacino playing as a police detective vs. De Niro, as a bank robber. Just because its epic shootout scene is worth watching.

Die Hard movies (1, 2 and 3): just epic.

And who could forget about the Lethal Weapon movies? (1987-1998)
