What do you REALLY think about Police?

Recommended Posts

The reason I ask this is quite simple. I was reading a post from one of my friend's son saying that (and I quote) 'police are a bunch of useless fu*ktards'.

Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate people having views, but civs only see one side of the police- the fights, arresting etc. And I find a lot of the time photos of black/ethnic minorities are plastered all over facebook, internet, and sometimes even the news.

The amount of hostility we face from day to day is something that those people will never experience.

So here it is, what do you TRUTHFULLY think about police?

They do their job - "protecting and serving" - and considering im not being hacked to death atm(at the moment) they do do it brilliantly....well most do

You might need to narrow it down to a specific country or department for more detailed answers

Of course you are going to get the odd officer who is a complete fool and thinks that just because he's a cop he can do what he likes. But I also think that there are many police officers who do a fantastic job. Of course, people are always happy to talk about the bad side of policing and make a big deal, but they never do when the police do a fantastic job.

I respect our police officers, even if some are complete w***ers.

They need to do what they need to do, yes you hear about the bad egg now and than. That's how all this dumb stuff gets started, like "police just do what they want or police just do more harm than good." 9/10 times why people hate them is because they them selfs have been arrested for doing something dumb. They think they have the easiest job in the world. I have been on ride alongs and I will never forget this. We were driving down the street and a group of kids saw us and they all said "fuck the police". I said to the officer why in hell do people do that and he said well I have arrested them for a robbery once. I think that if your one of the people that hate cops your just going off of what the news says. Like today on the news this report was the 1st thing to be said. Police officer shoots a freshmen boy. They even failed to mention why he shot him. They just said how good of a kid he was....

Where I live we have to deal with two departments-

OCSD and CHP

The OCSD has nothing negative about them. All young and very positive profesional guys who know how to do there job without going over board.

Then there's the CHP, who just hide in side streets and give tickets I have had to deal with the CHP before and a Sheriff and the CHP officer wasjust a total a)& and to keep a positive outlook I though it was just him but the more I run into, the more negative I get about them.

Different countries have their own specific unique set of policing methods and the populace it polices. Similarly different organizations also police different environments.

In addition different people have had different experiences dealing with cops; some negative and some positive which unfortunately/fortunately creates their opinion and impression.

I grew up in a poor immigrant community where interactions with Police Officers were often negative simply because either the cops didn't understand where we were coming from (face it, a cop who has never faced one bit of adversity trying to deal with people who face it on a daily basis); often the cops who worked the area were often negative.

Flash-forward now, Having worked with them for over four years in different areas of the city and in different environments; Clearbin put it best the majority of cops are out of touch with today's generation and environment.

I remember working with patrol officers in one area of the city which was predominantly poor, the officer's attitudes created an atmosphere of hate and they were out of touch with the average citizen merely creating an "Us vs. Them" mentality. It was funny because usually it's the other way around where we in the anti-gang/violence unit had that mentality and it would be the patrol officers who had the community-oriented mindset.

Which brings me to another point, the reason why many people have negative views of the police is simply because they view the police as an enforcement only organization rather than community building, I remember the first week my supervisor told me "You have the ability to make someone's day go from bad to good". I see the opposite for many officers in that they make someone's day go from bad to worse. It's funny because the military has the right approach, I was taught in the army that it's not all about destroying things and killing things it's about helping people, it's about going the extra mile to win over the hearts of the village, town or city your in. I don't see that in the Police, and that's why many people have the views they do.

Case in point, Pride Parade is the largest street parade in the City of Toronto. This year I supported the pride parade by being with the Army in uniform marching in support of equality; passing by I see some of my colleagues who didn't smile, didn't talk to anyone and never once did they have fun, of course I saw other colleagues embrace the parade, however you saw more of the former rather than the later.

Honestly, i have nothing but respect for the O.P.P, when i was 17 i was involved in a roll over accident just outside of hearst ontario, the O.P.P Officer that was on scene allowed me to sit in his cruiser for damn near 8 hours while trying to clean up the wreckage, he took me to a hotel, made sure i got some food, shared a few laugh's, took us where we needed to be the day after ON HIS DAY OFF ON CHRISTMAS DAY, (the accident happened on Christmas Eve) To this day, i'll never forget what he did for us, god bless him and he was just young, maybe 26.

I have nothing but pure respect for British Officers and I for one cannot wait until I join the ranks.

Our officers aren't as straight up as most other police officers in the world. We don't carry firearms, that's down to our Armed Response Units which almost every force has, even then the weapons are kept secured in the trunks. Therefore, our officers seem to be experts at diffusing sticky situations with nothing but verbal and physical contact.

Due to most of mainland being filled with "chavs" (See spoiler for picture), they get nothing but abuse yet our officers manage to keep a cool head, just last night a friend of mine was telling of an encounter which would had been a walk in the park for most armed officers.

chav23.jpg

During one evening, he was riding along with a fellow traffic officer when they spot something in the darkness on the side of the road. They flip on the side lights to reveal two teenagers have sex.

They get out of their patrol car and walk over to the teenagers and ask them to stop what they are doing (Public Indecency), As they do, the male stands up and produces a knife, he is given three clear warnings to drop the blade yet he charges at the unarmed officers.

One officer pulls out his baton and hits him twice, once in the wrist and once in the leg, causing the suspect to drop the knife. His girlfriend then charges at the officers after picking up the dropped knife, as the two lone officers are struggling they notice a car stop next to their cruiser, its at this point they radio for backup over the radio.

Four people get out of the vehicle and start charging the officers, the driver of the patrol car who was restraining the female manages to hold them back whilst the other officer continues to struggle with the male. Its at this point the male produces a fully-loaded and cocked firearm, the officer yells "GUN" over the radio and hits his panic button on the radio. The nearest ARU is 60 seconds away.

During the struggle, the gun goes off. Nobody is hit thankfully. One of the officers grabs the weapon and makes it safe. As the ARU pulls up, they hold the suspect at gunpoint as a RPU helps restrain the other suspects.

That is what our officers deal with across the country on a daily basis. What started as a simple "Move along please" turned into a fight for their lives. Turns out that the guy they had been struggling with and the guys that arrived in the car were apart of a major known gang.

Its because of this that I have nothing but the ultimate respect and appreciation for what our officers do on the frontline. I for one cannot wait until the day I can join and help make my community a safer place to live.

I do not understand why they dont carry weapons???

Also, I must say that in the USA, the media plays a major part in the general anger against cops. Usually the titles are similar to cop kills unarmed man or excessive force leads to death of teen. When the actual story is that they both had guns. However, no one reads the details they just focus on the title. Furthermore, being that I am planning on being a police officer once I graduate college(in a while) I try to find the best of officers even though some are truly negative

They believe it will reduce gun crime.

For me, it stops at them going out everyday with the possibility of losing their lives to save another; that's all I need to respect them.

Yes, as in any group, there are bad apples, but people treat bad cops like an epidemic. The media blows stories out of proportion, anti-cop groups latch on to them and spread their propaganda, all while ignoring the lawlessness that goes on around them.

Can't say anything bad about Lothian and Borders Police, they've been really good every time I've encountered them.

Here in America I have nothing but respect for cops (beside the few bad eggs) The media is so anti police its not even funny. Just today a I saw on the news "Freshmen shot and killed by police officer" They failed to metion that the Freshman was a freshman in college he was naked drunk and tried to hurt a police offcer.

A few years ago a cop had to shoot a man 15 times because he was hook up on crack. Media puts it Police officer shoot man 15 times during a traffic stop...

Its stupid if the media wasn't around pretty sure police would have a lot more people on there sides...

I can't wait to be a police officer my self in a few years...

Supporting those who make departments look bad is a terrible thing to do. There IS excessive force in police departments. This is what I don't understand. People who defend those who are blatantly in the wrong because they're part of the same organization. It's not the media who makes cops look bad. It's cops who make cops look bad. Though, with that in mind, you must put things in perspective, police have split seconds to react to what happens in front of them. They can't spend a few minutes planning what to do if it's happening right now in front of them. People make bad decisions when they make them split seconds, police are expected to be perfect all the time, which you and I, and most everyone, should know is impossible. I defend police if they're in the right. If they're in the wrong, we shouldn't go around parading something of their false innocence. Anyways, it probably looks like I have ADD right now if you're reading this, I go from topic to topic. Gah xD

Police officers are just human beings with a title. They're just like everyone else when you get down to it. And that is how I judge them.

I've had experiences where officers have been pure assholes to me. When I was younger, I got stopped by a local PD officer on foot and held until my parents could pick me up. At the time, all I was doing was walking down the street with my at the time girlfriend. Other hoodlums in the area were causing trouble and somehow I got tagged as one of them. I remember he specifically cursed out my mother when she came to pick me up, he called me all sorts of names and the worst, he cursed out and told my ex's mom via phone that she was a terrible parent. She, at the time, couldn't come to pick her up because she was in the hospital, attending to her sister who was suffering from a condition known as cancer.

I had (and still do have) connections to the Mayor at the time, who I recounted all of this information (and then some) to, and I haven't seen that particular officer since...

On the flipside, I've had plenty of experiences with the police that were the total opposite. I've had plenty of good conversations with many of them, and every time I've needed them, they've been there for me, no questions asked. Hell, I know most of my local PD on a first name basis now. I remember one time a couple of friends and I rode our bikes to McDonald's late at night. We couldn't get food because they wouldn't serve us at the drive thru (the inside was closed, it was after 12AM). A minute later a patrol car came in, somehow we got engaged in conversation and the next thing you know, they went around the drive thru in their car and got food for us.

So like I said, the way I see it, I think you just have to look at the individual, not the badge. Most people are good with good intentions, some are absolute douches. Such is life.

There be trolls afoot. Back to the question, people tend to hate them until they need them. Cops up here don't make much, but its alot of work to get hired on. They check over 30 references and do a polygraph. But people endure so that they can help the public that so unfairly judges them all the time.
