Don't post any links to GoFundMe or Kickstarter pages here as we cannot verify where any funds would go.

OpenIV have a donation link on their website if you wish to contribute directly to them, although it is doubtful they would continue even with financial support.

You can update it fine. Just once it asks to uninstall, click "remind me later" and you can proceed as usual.

I always clink on remind me later

and I'm glad that I got the offline version

You can say "you had to know this was coming because OpenIV was always in a legal grey area" but that isn't the issue. The issue, and what pisses me off, is that they sent the cease and desist because they think OpenIV is used to interfere with Online. Not because of the Liberty City project, not because it breaks the EULA, but because they actually think OpenIV is a source that Online modders/hackers use to disrupt other players.

Were they legally in the right to do it? Perhaps. But their reasoning is completely fucked.

That was a straight up lie by them.  If not Take Two, Rockstar knew about OpenIV and what it did.  There is absolutely no way they legitimately think OpenIV helps cheaters get online. It was a blatant lie, a cop out to avoid the truth. I have a theory the Liberty City project, which I hadn't known about and still don't know what it was (but I assume it was a full conversion for GTA V), is the main culprit behind this.  Think about it.  Take Two and Rockstar are LOADED with cash.  Would they really be that much of assholes to say "we need more, so lets fuck over a majority of our community in a last ditch effort to milk GTA V"?

The Liberty City project was a tool that was in development that would transfer the map from GTA IV to GTA V. You would need to have GTA IV installed for it to work; there was not going to be any redistribution of any files. Apparently someone with media ties did see the actual letter which does specify not transferring content across games:

I get OpenIV was trying to do something good, but they kinda shot themselves in the foot by pushing the limits with that.  They had to of known a full GTA IV map conversion would trigger Rockstar.  I mean, they were going to provide IV's map FOR FREE. We'd get to GTA maps for the price of one.  Rockstar would rather burn their company before letting that happen.

You would need to own (no pirates here, right?) and install GTA IV for it to work. If anything, it would have boosted sales for GTA IV.

Doesn't make any difference in greedy folk's eyes.  It'd still be seen as a loss of revenue.

They probably did shoot themselves in the foot it's about time everybody see their (R*/T2) bad side.

Screw them, I'm going to make it Open Source... Let's see how they'll stop that..

As far as I'm concerned OpenIV should fully comply with the C&D letter... Fully stop hosting and developing the tool by posting it on GitHub with an MIT licence. Then say the running the software may be illegal and to do so at your own risk. There is no legal recourse for companies (or anyone) to say that code (by itself) is illegal or in anyway "infringes their rights." Code would be A) protected by the first amendment (to some degree) and B) fully protected by copyright and most importantly C) Completely unenforceable.

Just look at all of the "security" tools that are out there that would be more aptly name hack-tools/exploit kits. They are not illegal and can't be.

Bottom line: If you (T2 and R*) don't like people messing with your code, cheating online, and decrypting  content then DO BETTER. The burden is on you to protect what you want protected not to hide under your TOS. Which, funny enough is likely illegal now thanks to the Supreme Court (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/05/supreme-court-victory-right-tinker-printer-cartridge-case). Given that, T2's claims hold no weight as their TOS would likely not hold water in court given this brand precedent.

Unfortunately, it seems many devs are selfish in that they don't want to share knowledge, or they are actually doing things illegal and therefore won't share the code... either way, there are ways to do things on a legit basis... SparkIV should've continued on to V, but unfortunately, OpenIV snuffed them out before V was even a thought about....

I would totally support development of OpenV in an open source way. I've never done any GTA modding so I would have no IDEA where to start but my day job is a developer so all I do is write code all day anyway. Point me towards a Git repo though and I would be on my merry way to GTA modding... How hard could it be?... Famous last words...

This is making me laugh. Take 2 a, such a joke, why do they even have anything to do with GTA V? It should be all R* then all would be good. It isn't like they don't have money to run it. I got a question also, is Alexander Blake (creator of ScriptHookV) on the OPENiV team? And if so, does this mean we wont see an update to it?
