I'm glad you got your problem solved, however, it'd be nice if you could avoid quoting the original post as it is a very long one and makes the scrolling quite long, so people coming to this thread don't have to scroll forever if they are looking for something in particular

I only realized after posting that it probably wasn't smart to do that.  Won't happen again!

If you don't, that means you don't have a mods folder, and if you don't have a mods folder, then make one following the tutorial that is linked at the beginning of this guide.

I have a purple mods folder just like it shows in the pictures

Then you either are doing something wrong, or the file you try to copy to the mods folder is already in the mods folder.

You are clicking on the folder. Of course it's not going to work, you've to click on the dlc.rpf archive. Check the screenshots in the guide.

Ive always wanted a specific tutorial to explain the inner workings of the carvariations to me. Ive seen on youtube some generic tutorials--namely people throwing some numerical values around to get the car to spawn certain colors. I get the jist of that, I just don't know how that works in relation to police light bars and such. The whole rest of the file looks like gibberish to me. If you know of such a tutorial somewhere please sent it my way because I cant find it. Also thank you for the explanation of the rpf files, because I was doing it the stupid way, digging up each one and looking for its root spot. Such pains! :-)

I just don't know how that works in relation to police light bars and such.

If you mean by that the way the lightbar flashes depending on the police slot, it's just a line for every emergency vehicle that is something like "sirensettings=", and after the =, a certain number that relates to a definite pattern. For example, the number 13 is for the halogen lightbars. The police, ambulance, police transport slots have this setting for example. The number 1 is for the basic LED pattern, for the police2, fbi, fbi2 or sheriff2 slots, for example. Don't know the other numbers by heart as most of the time I just use the carvariation.meta lines given with the car I downloaded and installed.

Thanks for explaining it some.I played around with some of those values and got a pretty good idea of how it works.

so i installed some cars in MPchristmas (added) and now there are no sounds to the car. help?

Install them properly with all the carvariation.meta and vehicles.meta lines and there will be sound. There's no magic formula, if you do things correctly, it'll work. If it doesn't work, that means you failed at some point.

i woudn't say it was my fault, but the line that i copied had no audio hash, or whatever...

so my PSA is make sure your carvariations has a audio hash! example:

Mine looked like:      <audioNameHash></audioNameHash>

It needs to look like:       <audioNameHash>police</audioNameHash>

these are found about 8 lines in from the start of the vehicles.meta

anyone who might be having problems check this out!

Actually, that warning will display nonetheless. You need to activate Edit mode, and it will create the mods folder if it doesn't already exist.

Great guide/FAQ!

Wish I'd have discovered this before I learned a lot of these lessons for myself.

The most important things about installing Mods in GTA is, first, always backup files before you install the mod, even if it's a previously modded file! It's easier to go back than to have to re-edit files, especially with vehicles.meta and carvariations.meta!

Second, don't give up, if a Mod is not working triple check that you've done everything in the directions, that often includes opening the files in OpenIV's viewers again to make sure the changes are there, I have had times personally where I thought the file copied successfully, but actually didn't and caused the mod to not work since a file was not changed.

Lastly, don't forget to read the mod page comments before you try installing a mod and again if you have issues. I've had several cases where a "broken" mod was fixed by a commenter and if you didn't read the comments first you may just assume its broken and give up or waste time trying to fix it yourself again!

There is a new rpf in the patchday10 that you can now put all your police cars in just like with patchday9 to make sure the game loads it properly

I already updated the guide yesterday about that, but thanks for reminding it.

Weird, I'm still having an issue with some of my modded cars not showing up in the game at all. My FBI and FBI2 slots show up fine, but my Unmarked slot spawns in a bugged out CVPI. All of the Police slots spawn in the vanilla cars. Everything in my game is working correctly except for the cars. I've tried placing it in 10ng in both my mods folder and the actual game folder. I've gone ahead and tried putting it everywhere possible and it still doesn't work. Do I have to remove the cars from 9ng in order for them to load in 10ng?
