[GUIDE] Police car mods: the whys and hows, and troubleshooting

Featured Replies

Awesome- thank you very much for clearing that up, makes sense now. One last question; I know a lot of the cars when downloaded are labeled say police1 or 2 or sheriff 1 or 2.

But if i download a file that comes.. say as police2, and I change the file name to say sheriff1, do i need to change anything else with the other files like the carvariation and vehicles meta files? Or will changing the model file name have no impact the other files that come with the vehicle mods.

Thanks again for this great thread of info.

If you have a car model that is, say, supposed to replace the police2 slot. You want it to put in the sheriff slot. You'll need to change the name of the model (police2) to the name of the slot you want it to replace (sheriff). But if the car comes with specific carvariation.meta and vehicles.meta files, you might also need to replace the police2 mentions to sheriff in order to connect those code lines to the correct model.

Great, thank you, I have noticed some mods that mention this and that some do not.

Great info and thank you again!

Okay..not sure if this goes here, but I use to have 2 police cars as addons in mpchristmas2 and had my handling lines customized and all was perfect. Now if I change anything in handling.meta my games crashes loading single player and if I reinstall my addon cars to mpchristmas my game will crash when populating world. Seems like whatever I try ever since the rockstar update is a fail. Any idea as to what it could be..was curious to see if anyone else had the same issues. Please keep in mind all the files I used worked perfectly before.    thanks

I'm currently trying to figure out modding everything into a custom dlc.rpf file.

Now I am having issues with the vehicles.meta file as the windows of my vehicles are tinted. In the meta file the line is <diffuseTint value="0x00FFFFFF" /> so this should not be tinted. I have activated in the meta file in the content.xml file. So I have ran out of idea to know how to make a vehicle.meta file work in a custom dlc.

Also, yes it is active in the dlclist.xml

Does anyone have an idea?

Hello to you, furry fellow.

Are the cars in your custom dlc.rpf file actually replacing the existing cars of the game, or are they add-on cars? If they're add-on cars, I'm afraid I won't be of much help to you as I myself never tried to make a custom dlc.rpf file, but the info you need might be in this thread.

No sir, they are replacing existing cars. The tinted windows are happening on a range of different models such as POLICE4, POLICEB, POLICET, PRANGER and maybe even more.

So far I identified the issues as the vehicles.meta file not actually being read by the game inside the custom dlc folder. since when I put the meta in update.rpf it works fine.

Hi there.  I'm not sure if you still read this, but hopefully I can offer some assistance.

I've had this happen as well with a few cars.  On my old rig I had quite a few, but when I tried to reuse them on my new one, it randomly stopped working.  Well, I tried installing them again at a later date and it was fine.  I suggest either

a)  Remove the meta and carvar for those specific models, and copy the meta and car var lines from a working car, and try them like that.  Verify if it's actually a meta/carvar, or a vehicle file itself.  I advise keeping the original meta and carvar lines for these cars saved just in case.

b) Double check the meta and carvar for this car match the format of mpchristmas2.  I, too, utilize mpchristmas2 for my add-on cars, and I've found that the format for the carvar and meta lines vary per DLC, and in some cases, the format may be an issue.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

For the tinted windows being pitch black and the light bar lighting up, I followed your instructions and replaced the line in the vehicles.meta file, but it didn't fix the problem for me. Hmm....  Nevermind I found the problem

"rename them to the name of the slot you want them to be"

Uhhh? You mean?

If you want the car to be in the police2 slot, rename the car files to police2. Or police3 if you want them in the police3 slot. Or sheriff, sheriff2, fbi2, you get the gist.

"Help, all my windows are tinted pitch black, and my lightbar doesn't light up because of that!

It's a problem that is, to my knowledge, inherent to only the sheriff2 and pranger files. It makes some models having pitch black tinted windows, and since many models have the lightbar glass of the same material as the windows, it tints the lightbar glass as well, preventing the lights from flashing through. There's a very easy fix for that. Search for the vehicles.meta file located in update/update.rpf/common/data/level/gta5, and extract it somewhere. Open the extracted file with notepad or similar software, and press Ctrl+F to open the search bar. Search for the name of the car slot you installed your modded car in and causing this problem. Once you found the car lines, scroll down until you find a line that looks like this:

<diffuseTint value="0xAA0A0A0A" />

And replace it with this:

<diffuseTint value="0x00FFFFFF" />

It'll make the windows transparent and make the lightbar light up.

Didn't help. The value already was 0x00FFFFFF but the windows are black anyway. -.-

Are they ELS or not? If not then I'd look at the car col, if they are ELS did it come with ELS setting for that car usually named after the car your installing.

Who's the author so I can see the install location, how old it is, and yeah I could tell since your in this article lol and stuff.

I've been looking around for an answer to this but I can't seem to find one. You know what you're talking about, so here I am.

There are some cars that allow you to create custom license plates, but when I do that they hardly ever show up in game. BxBugs' CVPI for example, I put the plates on the template as normal and it shows up in OIV, and works just fine in game. However, some cars I'll put the plate on the template and it either won't show up in OIV or the game, or will only show up in OIV but not the game. Is it something to do with a .meta file or something?
