Carmodders, importance of Lods.

Hi,

I made an topic for every gta v car modder and hoping they will learn or use this.

This is very important against bugs.

You have some lods.
you have a normal.yft and a high.yft.

When you are sitting in the car the game uses high.yft. that's the one with the most details.
then you have normal.yft with and L0, L1,L2,L3.
How further you stand from the car how less detailed it is. that is for the efficiency for the game engine. then it doesn't load the whole model. and giving the vid mem more space for other things.

what some people do, (let say the cvpi what is current.) they use one detailed version for all L0,L1,L2.
eventually the game will crash or you get texture popins because of the use of that vid mem in the distant.
That's why i am making a version that meets the game standards.

I hope that car modders will use this for his own convert. That will make the game more stable.

Also, keep in mind that low LODs don't have to look *good*. L1 should be good (it's also used for damage rendering), but past that it can look worse. The game's default low-LOD stuff looks pretty awful, but that's because it's not meant to be seen up close.

That's why i made this topic to inform people here. and hoping they understand and fix their mods.

For us people who just use the car mods, is there a good way to verify a model and the LODs have been done correctly?

Only with zmodeler3, or spawn the car in game. if you see lower quality of the car when distance increases, than it should have proper LOD´s, If tha car vanish when distance increases, then it only use HQ LOD (L0). I have seen some modders uses the original gta 5 car to use in L1,L2,L3,L4 and that is jus aweful.

You can view unlocked vehicles in OpenIV. It has an option to switch between the LODs. The _hi.yft will only have the high lod(with interior) the other .yft should decrease in quality until you have a model that would not even be good enough for a PS1 game.

admin can you make this as a sticky? because this is very important, most of the modders don't know this.

Slightly off-topic, but where does one start if they want to become a car-modder? What tools are required? How does the game file structure work? I'm particularly interested in converted in-game vehicles as undercover add-on cars :)

To become a car modder,

Well, I'm starting out as one too but what I've found out so far:

  • Learn about Lods & How To Set Them [This Topic]
  • Get ZModeler3 [Trail Version] to edit models & make your cars. [http://zmodeler3.com/]
  • Get down the basics & grab the references in this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNiSSR1VISQ]
  • Take parts from other GTA 5 cars to make your cars custom
  • Gets some parts & tools from the LCPDFR dev resources [This Site]
  • Get OpenIV [openiv.com]

So far thats all I know... Hope it helps

I only know a handfull of modders who understand how to make good looking vehicles with good performance :

Bxbugs123

Steinberg4145

Izick

Kane

Cj24

Lundy

Yard1 .

The rest seem not to understand how it works.

I could release stuff, too.

But i don't have time to make it right.

So, instead of releasing crap, I don't release anything at all.

Is this the reason why my game crashes when I try to enter a vehicle that I have added in say fbi2 or sheriff2. Or is it a issue with the SUV models. Or has GTA created some way of monitoring or punishing the modding community. It def could be my ignorance but I have added the model to x64e and also the latest patch. All the other models work. Even those that came in the same pack as the models that crash. So confused.

Are you using a modified vehicle.meta entry provided with them, and are they somewhat older mods? Those two slots being the issue sounds like a problem with the meta entry: R* changed the vehiclelayouts used by them a few updates ago, and they tend to crash if not using the updated settings.

The sheriff2 is occupied by the tahoe located in the pack by thegreathah. The fbi2 vehicle is POLICESCO. The sheriff2 did not require a new meta however the fbi2 provided by policesco did. I made to sure to put it in the correct location. Im not sure what exactly is the issue, they are not older in my humble opinion but im just a noob honestly. I just find it weird that these are the only two that i have issue with.

I had installed a mod that made dlc cars spawn regularly in the game. In that dlc (patchday 5) there is a sheriff3 that was created for a sheriff buffulo however i dont think that its related to this problem. Although it could have.

I had even gone so far as to grab a custom gameconfig that adds supposedly allows you to have a lot of addons. This was after my issue however and ultimately did not fix my issue.

Im stumped. Thank you for responding and if you have any other ideas please let me know.

I have a question regarding zmodeler, and it's probably a stupid one.

Howver, I've imported my vehicles perfectly fine...no issue with that. However, when I go merge (these files are .z3d) The lightbars are huge comapred to my police car. Only a handfew lightbars are actually the correct size. Sometimes, they're even too small..any help please?
