Man Dies After 3-day Video Gaming Binge

Featured Replies

A video gamer in Taiwan has died after a three-day gaming binge, the country’s second “sudden death” involving an Internet café customer this year.

The 32-year old man was found dead in the city of Kaohsiung, the Taipei Timesreports. The man, identified only by his surname, Hsieh, had been playing combat computer games for three days.

Staff at the Internet café initially thought that the man, who suffered cardiac failure, was sleeping.

“Hsieh was a regular customer here and always played for consecutive days. When tired, he would sleep face-down on the table or doze off slumped in his chair,” an Internet café attendant told reporters. “That is why we were not aware of his condition in the beginning.”

Details of the death, which occurred in the Hunai district of Kaohsiung earlier this month, were released last week. The incident was ruled a “sudden death” from prolonged computer gaming.

A police official said that cold temperatures and exhaustion from intense game-playing could have contributed to Hsei’s cardiac failure. Police are stepping up patrols of Internet cafes, warning gamers of the dangers of prolonged gaming.

“We advise people to get up and move around after every two hours of computer gaming,” said the official.

On Jan.1 a 38-year-old man was found dead at an Internet café in New Taipei City after a five-day video game marathon.

Seems like this guy plays way too much Call of duty. Jk

But seriously, why would you play video games for three days straight, is it that important? Also this case reminds me of an episode on 1000 ways to die.

That one kid had heart issues to begin with according to his parents (there are a few of the same stories posted at the F4 BMS forums.), and would regularly game for 2-3 days straight.  Being sedentary that long exacerbated the situation, on top of non-stop adrenaline rush for day's on end, can indeed kill.

I use to do 18-hour runs with TES-Obilivion on weekends back in the day (on my 24" CRT Sony monitor - that thing weighed 50lbs!), but not without breaks, eating, walking around/stretching, taking smoke breaks outside.  Sometimes after being inside of ARMA-III too long (like 3-hour stints - which is rare these days), I start feeling a bit of motion sickness, so when that happens, time to take a few hours or day long break.  -Weird that only really quick FPS movements and panning for long periods of time will do this...my flight sims I could maintain longer runs just fine.

Anyhow, there are some interesting observations done by scientists and doctors about this that you can ready up on.  One thing I got out of some of the articles; look away from the screen every once in a while and focus your eyes at various objects at various distances for a few minutes.  That will alleviate the eyes from fatiguing by staring at a 2d screen too long and allow your brain to adjust properly and relax.

Another thing is the seating position.  For super long gaming sessions, get a really comfy chair that is ergonomic for long seating stretches (like a nice office work chair or dedicated gaming chair) so you don't have to worry about blood clots, which happens more than one may think.

Anyhow, what a way to go...I guess could be worse.

Good day!

ive played for years and years and years ive done it for years not so long that it would kill me and days straight sleep deprivation was most likely the cause here what a poor lack of judgement on this person your health comes before anything non essential such as this.

Honestly, I'm never on the computer for more than an hour at a time, and I'm always off for at least an hour before I get back on again. I make sure I spend plenty of time outside and stuff like that, so even though I play a lot of LCPDFR, I can still maintain excellent health.

He was trying to get his K/D up and reach 10th Prestige! Just kidding. (I'm a fan of the Battlefield series like BF4 & BF3)

I don't even know how someone can actually do this. That is just... I don't think any word can describe how... Like I said, no word.
