Our lives have been a lie

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure how I feel about this video, i happen to like my chemistry class and my math models class, I understand the message is trying to give, but it seems it's saying we should just abandon all things that are not realeted to real life and just forget all those who actually enjoy the subject. :(

This video is very true. If only we could be taught how to do everyday things that we would be doing when we got older. I'm going to be honest, many are clueless when they get out of high school.

Although i agree with most points in this video.(A system used to format the sheep).I left high school certified in Carpentry.I think it comes down to what you yourself try to take from it.You can just skate threw school and barley pass anything and still graduate. Then realize after school is done you have no real skills.Or you can think for yourself and learn shit.

I agree with element's thoughts on this topic.

When it comes down to it, it's really up to each of us to be proactive, and do some of our own thinking.

However, there used to be classes that taught basic skills, such as how to take care of tasks in a home. Unfortunately, these courses are no longer around, due to changes in society.

For instance, fixing a car isn't taught in schools because it's not a walk in the park. From someone who works on his own car, there's a lot involved in performing maintenance. A lot of people aren't interested in obtaining these skills, and would much rather send their car to a mechanic.

What this video leaves out are some of the economic and psychological aspects of this subject, and why these courses aren't around anymore. It's easy to point out a flaw in society, which is what this video does, but it's another story to explain why.

We have a mechanics class at my school or workshop you could call it. I never plan on joining that class really because I'm not a fan of driving and because like what you said it all really depends on the person and the way they choose to live their life and we have no right to judge someone based on their job occupation. A friend of mine yesterday said he over heard some girl say she wanted to be a stripper and he said "ah gross, she could possibly get raped" and all that other stuff. Hey it's her job and it's what she wants to do, what are you gonna do put her on a leash and watch over her for the rest of her life?

I like my education system here in Alberta... for the most part.  I feel as if classes are overcrowded with people who don't want to be there.  It would be a much funner place if the people who never want to be in school, aren't.  If the teachers and principals stop wasting their time on governing attendance, rules and behavior, and start focusing there time and energy on the courses themselves and making classes better and more effective for the people who actually want to learn.  For instance I want to be a doctor, so i am in bio, chem and physics.  There is a good 20 minutes per class wasted on lecutres about behavior and the teachers wonder why were always behind.  Also I would love it if we only did classes we wanted, like personally, I think social Studies or History is pointless as we are living in the present and should be thinking about the future not the past.  But that is just me.

So THIS is the reason I drive a wrecker?! I'll just blame the education system :D

He does however make a good point, 13 years in school to graduate then go work at Mcdonalds to pay for University Degrees that WILL get you the job you want in life.

The American education system is broken, this is true. I disagree that my life has been a lie.

In 2005, a federal court upheld that our nation’s public schools trump parent rights:

Parents and politicians alike were shocked when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled on Nov. 2 that parents’ fundamental right to control the upbringing of their children “does not extend beyond the threshold of the school door,” and that a public school has the right to provide its students with “whatever information it wishes to provide, sexual or otherwise.”

The court went on to clarify:

“Parents have no due process or privacy right to override the determinations of public schools as to the information to which their children will be exposed.”

The way I see this is a way for the government to brainwash it's people.

Who says that school is supposed to prepare you for life? Yes, it does do some of that but that should be the responsibility of the parents. School cannot possibly teach you everything you need to know, some of it you just need to learn for yourself. I can tell whoever made this is probably either a senior in high school or just graduated, he thought that since he is done or almost done with high school he should now know everything and get hired by the perfect employer but something happened and he realized he doesn't know shit and/or didn't get the job he wanted and now he feels cheated. School is supposed to prepare you to go learn a job skill and/or move onto higher education. When you go and learn to be a mechanic or EMT or any other job there are simple things like math, English, science that you will need to know; that is what school is preparing you for.

The title is misleading as usual but i think our schools can only do so much and i think you have to keep things as general as possible to ensure everyone gets a fair education. However i do think that they could do more to prepare students for their career before they leave high school. In my high school you were able to do dual enrollment so you could take classes at the local state college in different career fields. I think this is really the best way to go because not only do you get a jump start on your degree or certificate you get accustomed to college you get an glimpse of the field you thought you wanted and can decide if that's what you really want to do with you life.

I think it would be a waste of our resources to teach students how to work at Mcdonalds or be a cashier at Wal mart. For most low skill jobs all the training you need to do the job is taught to you on the job.

Our education system is there to lay the groundwork and its up to each student to take care of the rest, you cant teach someone common sense.....

I didn't mean that we should just forget history, Social Studies was mandatory up too grade 9, so its not like i learned nothing.  I did learn about our ancestors and stuff like that.  I just mean personally i don't think it should be mandatory for grade 12's in order to graduate.

I think whoever made this video is a person who trying to shoot down the government for something they supposedly have to supply, but like what you said it's the parents job to get their kid prepared for real life (eg; having the sex talk, how to manage a budget, basic fighting skills) stuff like that, although it would be nice to have an actual sex education class or martial arts at most schools, but sadly I feel as though many parents or politicians would be against that.

Well alot of the facts in this video are false for Australia. our high schools (which are grade 6-12 in the state I live in) there are subjects you can take that can teach you the skills they were saying. We have subjects that can teach you how to cook not only at a in-the-house level but even up to an industry level (i.e. hospitality) how to build a house (well a small 5mx5m), how to do not only checkbooks but most accounting stuff, Then there are all the different levels of core subject (i.e. Maths and English) that make sure not matter how much you struggle or trive you can have to best outcome. and this is the public schools the privet ones have alot more.

EDIT: Plus there is also the option to 'drop-out' at the end of year 10 and go into full-time work

I think most of this is just lazy ass people how dont pay attending in class.

While I can agree that education is an important topic to discuss, simply linking a Youtube link isn't enough to warrant a good topic in a forum. Please avoid that in the future.

On to the video: Lol. America is such a lovely country at times, isn't it? I am glad I live in a developed country where our education system works :P
