I would say Police officer in a town or city, you have more power and get to deal with a larger range of events. The sheriffs office deals more with the courts and unincorporated areas of the county, and assists other agencies when needed. And FHP only deals with traffic enforcement and investigating accidents, and everyone hates them even other agencies so yea...

Local police don't have more power than a sheriff's deputy or trooper. I'm not sure what you mean by power, but they all have the same arrest powers. You must live in a county with few unincorporated areas because a lot of counties in Florida the S.O. is the primary law enforcement agency in the area and usually handle more called than the city PDs.

Sheriff as it's my local agency and they are super chill.

I like city cops too in some cities, some can be real dicks though.

State police are kick ass, but are last on my list because of the California highway patrol officers. Those dudes in socal always have a real stick up their ass and I have very limited amounts of respect for them. (I hear the CHP in norcal is nice though).

Also @deputylund, at least where I am, Sheriff deputies make close to double the starting salary of the CHP. So not sure where that logic comes from in wanting to go with the CHP based on salary lol

Power was  a poor choice, every Law Enforcement officer in the state has the power of arrest but depending on the type of agency you work for you may have more powers per say than others. And of course a larger jurisdiction even though you are assigned to a CSA. My county is comprised of  mostly small towns and cities with very little unincorporated areas so thats why i would go with a Police department. The SO doesnt respond to calls within City Limits unless they are requested by the PD. Now other counties are different and the sheriffs office is responsible for a much larger jurisdictional area. So i think it just depends on the area you live in.

Who wouldn't want to get paid 60-80k to ride a Harley around, looking out for speeders, ect.

Might as well get paid for something you love.

If the world were anything like NFS Hot Pursuit '10, then its gotta be Highway Patrol.

Hey,

I apologize if this question not belong in this topic, but what is actually difference between police department, sheriff office and state troopers in USA?

Are state troopers some kind of state police which is the same for every country in US or...?

I live in EU so we have a little different law enforcement regulation.

Thanks for answer.

Cheers

Their differences are jurisdictions and duties.

Police Officers work out of a Police Department, which is responsible for a City level. They have jurisdiction only within the city. (This means they can only perform their duties such as arresting within the confines of the city boundary).

Sheriffs Department is the primary law enforcement for a county level. (States are divided into counties which contain cities). Depending where you are in the United States, Sheriffs Departments have different duties. Up North where I live, they're primarily responsible for maintaining county prisons and lockups. However, in the South and West of the US, they traditionally are assigned a patrol responsibility as well. The Sheriff and his Deputies only have jurisdiction within a county.

As you know, the US is split into 50 different states. Every State has a State Police, which is responsible for anything and everything more or less. State Police generally are responsible for protecting State buildings and infrastructure, in particular Highways. Very rarely are highways patrolled by anyone else but that State's State Police. Since the State Police are usually the biggest in the state, they are also responsible for rural policing, for communities that don't have police. They also provide disaster type responses for cities that cannot afford such equipment needed to respond with. State Troopers have jurisdiction throughout the entire state.

The United States does not have a federal police force unlike many other countries. The FBI is the closest thing to it. Generally, where a Federal Police Response is needed, the National Guard of that State will be called in with addition to federal agencies such as ICE, FBI, ATF, DEA, ect.
