Are You Religious, Or Non-Religious?

Recommended Posts

Why or why aren't you religious, or non-religious? If the moderators decide to keep this topic open, I'm sure they'll be strict with enforcing the rules here so that nobody is offended.

Examples of an invalid argument:

  • I'm an Atheist because I don't believe in fairy tales
  • I'm a Christian because it's common sense that some type of superior power exists
  • Atheists are dumb
  • Religion is fake (If you don't understand something about a religion or vice verse, ask or debate it)

No type of educated and civil debate can come out of these types of statements. For the sole purpose of beginning the debate, I'll start with a basic statement.

I'm a Christian, because I believe that there is some higher power.

I'm a Theist, always have been. Although I support scientific theories, I still believe in a numinous figure. As the saying goes,  I'd rather live my whole life assuming there is a God, only to find out that there isn't, than to live my whole life assuming there isn't a God, only to find out there is.

While I do not consider myself a religious person, I do belive that there is some kind of power that started everything. I suppose I could call myself an agnostic.

However, I was raised in a Christian family and I have deep respect for Christianity and other religions, and I belive that everybody if free to belive in what they want, as long as they don't force their believes on other people.

I don't believe in religion, as mostly it's just a written tool to keep the masses fearful and ignorant, and the priests in money. I also just don't like the fact that innocent stories in a book written 2000 years ago are exploited for profit and used as grounds for violence and war today.

I'm an Atheist. Because i don't see how there could be anyone "up there". If a God exists, that God would need to come from somewhere. Everything has to start somewhere. The way the Bible discribes God is that he is able to destroy whole Citys by magicly casting Rain & Waves and whatnot because he didin't liked the way people acted. THAT means God has moral standards and is able to think about his creations. And he made the Earth and the Sun and Humans. BUT that means God has to be some living form, able to think, able to react and able to form life. Which means..he or IT has to come from somewhere, live somewhere and operate somewhere. + God had to be born first to do all that, or at least been created. Nothing is just "There". Which means he is the Son of another God. Which means we would have an endless chain of Gods. But than again. Gods can't die. Which means all those Gods would still be there.

The whole God system just dosen't makes sense to me. Beliving in God would also mean that EVERYTHING would be possible. How can you belive in a God but call the next guy crazy because he belives in BigFoot? BigFoot would be way more realistic than a God in my thinking, but than again...mabye my thinking is too logical or to "low" for that topic. But thats the way i see it.

Atheist. I see flaws in "God theory".

I've seen people in troubles where they shout at God for not helping them and he doesn't show up. I've seen people thanking God for saving them from similar troubles and he doesn't show up. I believe the ones who survived a fatal accident were solely saved by the event's probability while they believe some knight in shining armor saved them. I believe their fellows who couldn't survive died solely because of the event's probability despite remembering God more honestly than the ones who survived. I believe God is a humanification of nature created by our ancestors so that their future generations would learn to fear nature's wrath and in turn avoid harming it. Its merely an irony that we pollute air, land, water and environment today and go to the church on sunday as if that would restore everything back to normal. People nowadays worship God BECAUSE their ancestors used to, defeating the actual purpose of the creation of God rest of the time. I believe if God were to be here and if once he had showed up in the last 200 years anywhere on the face of the earth, the media (newspapers) would've covered the story or at least there were credible witness statements recorded somewhere. But alas! Nobody has seen what they call God in at least the last two centuries. This concept is being carried on from generations to generations merely on thousands of years old hearsay. And no, I do not believe the blasphemous theory of some theists who say the God has abandoned earth because we humans have spiraled out of control. I mean how crazy is that? On one hand you say he's so kind that he crafted this planet with his own bare hands in six days worth of time and on the other hand he just abandoned us like that? That sounds something like a human would do, not God. I have other philosophies but I better stop right now.

I am not religious.  At all.  In a way, I guess you can say I'm agnostic.  Even thought I don't practice any religion, I am not dismissing the idea of a higher power.

I'm agnostic. I try to distance myself from the regular religion vs science "discussions", but.....yeah.

I believe there is something that created all that is existing currently, whether it be a deity or a scientific thing, we might never know.

I am, however, slightly towards anti-theist 'side' tho. Even if there is a deity, I refuse to believe he/she will sit idly by while so much wrong doing is happening in this world.

See, this is where I disagree. Humans aren't the only things on the planet, and who knows what lies beyond. If there was such a being who created everything, I doubt he/she/it would give a shit about mankind.

Well, basing an Earthly ideal on something that isn't of the Earth (Such as a God of some sort) in my opinion, is slightly invalid. Under human logic and what we've seen and assumed on Earth, that statement is formed. We can't take an Earthly statement and opinion, and apply it to something that's supposedly greater than Earth.

Please bear in mind that this is just my opinion.

See, this is where I disagree. Humans aren't the only things on the planet, and who knows what lies beyond. If there was such a being who created everything, I doubt he/she/it would give a shit about mankind.

According to my religion, Christianity, God put all people on Earth to do good. We're to live a life similar to that of the savior, Jesus Christ. We're supposed to spread happiness, create miracles, propose peaceful solutions to disagreements, help the person next to you, etc. If you follow these guidelines, you'll go to Heaven, and remain there forever. This would be your reward for helping make the world a better place. If you don't and do evil you'll go to hell and burn forever. Since  you wanted to do things wrong on Earth, you'll suffer the permanent consequences and feel the burden of pain you've probably caused several others while on Earth.
