What war do you find most intresting?

Featured Replies

Hey guys so i wanted to know what war you guys found most interesting, i decided to create this topic because i'am a big war fan and military fan. Edit: there is this title better, sorry.

My is world war 2, reason is because without nazi Germany would still exist and the extreme dictatorship in italy.

Also the civil war. Civil-war-lincoln-pinkerton.jpgw08_amikazes.jpg

I have a hard time trying to understand how one can have a 'favorite' war. We're talking about thousands of deaths. War is just a fancy name for organized massive murder. Especially the WWII and the 2 nuclear bombs, the genocide, the occupied countries.

I agree with the others. The title seems a bit...morbid.

The war I enjoy studying them most, however, is probably World War II. Mainly because of the technologies that were developed by the Allied Forces as well as by the Germans. Many of the things developed then are either still in use today, or greatly improved and used. With that said, I also find the modern Iraq war, Desert Storm, and Vietnam fairly interesting to read about.

I think the following is an accurate response to the "what's your favorite war?" title...

"...My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est

Pro patria mori."

If you don't know what that is from, go start your long train of research now. I really hope most people here do recognise it.

To more directly answer the topic though, the events leading up to the First World War, right the way through to the end of the Second World War for me was the most interesting time to study. The First World War changed the world, especially with the events which occurred following the armistice. Everything from that point up to the end of the Second World War holds so much information that should never be forgotten or lost to the world because of how significant both wars were.

Very much a lover of history.

I find the title of this topic offensive. Nobody should have a favorite war. Do you understand what you are saying? You are a big "war fan", do you understand how wrong that is? I hate to be one of those people that blames video games and TV shows (because I usually hate those people) but I do think that the amount of violence that the younger generation is exposed to makes you guys so desensitized to violence and makes you think that combat is all fun and heroic like in Battlefield or whatever game you play.

I'm sure the OP is aware how monstrous war is and I don't believe he meant anything by the title nor content of this thread. His poor wording, however, made it seem so.

Correct me if I am wrong, but all I believe the OP wants to know is what war people found the most intriguing in terms of tactics, equipment, etc.

As you prolly can see (if u visited my profile page) i'm very interested in the American Civil War. Specialy from the viewpoint of the South. It's just an interesting topic for me. First thing everyone is thinking about when they see the rebel flag are things like slavery, racism and the KKK...while the truth is way more complicated. Anyways...thats how i got into the civil war topic. It's something that always kinda got my attention and i'm not done learning about it. There is so much about this War i have yet to cover and learn about.

Revolutionary war is the one I find most interesting Although that and WW2 are really the only wars I find justified.

Revolutionary war always seems to get no love. Those are the patriotic heroes fighting an enemy outmanned, outgunned, outtrained... The were nothing but a ragtag force that went toe to toe with best military in the world. All for themselves. An idea they believed in, not because they were ordered to; that's true patriotism.

I have a great interest in conflicts more recently such as the conflict currently in Ukraine, the collapse of Yugoslavia, Chechnya and The Vietnam War; primarily because these wars have a lot of politics behind them which means that you have to read further between the lines of politics and the choices made by governments, not just the two (Or in Bosnia's case 3) sides fighting. Yugoslavia is interesting as allegiance of the republics changed so many times. The Croats were at war with the Serbs and Belgrade, next they were fighting the Bosnian Muslims and then the Serbs again. Why? Politics. When you look closer, there is a lot of interesting things to see which make actions in the war more understandable. There is a LOT to look at with this war (Same with Vietnam).  Ukraine is interesting as it is shaping relations between the West and Russia in tensions higher than that of 1989, meaning anything can happen.

My favourite war? None of them. All war consists of is death and destruction. You could not of picked a worse title for this thread.

While that's a good point, he plainly didn't mean anything by it. It should have been worded something to the likes of "favorite war history to study". I would have to second the motion on World War II because of what lead up to it, the uniqueness of its politics, technology and destruction on a whole new scale, and how things turned out after. Really, you could argue that the years 1914-1991 are all tied in together making it one period starting with all the various European empires and ending with the eventual dissolving of the Soviet Union. There's a lot of interesting things to be learned, and general lessons that need to stay fresh in the minds of politicians and citizens alike today.
