  • So what would you have done after repeatedly warning some one who is holding two deadly weapons and approaching you to back off and put the weapons down? There are 4 possibilities to this: 1. Tase

  • Justified. If you are pulling a weapon against a police officer, you better be ready to face the consequences of your actions.

Yes, legally. No personally. He did issue multiple warnings and the man kept going towards him. However me personally if there was a tazer on me I would have used that or I would have waited until he stepped even more closer.

I do agree with you, or he could have shot him in a non-lethal place like a leg.

Its simple if a officer tells you to do something you do it and yes he was right on every level.

Officers are not trained to shoot in the leg they are trained to shoot center mass no mater what, if their life is in danger then they will apply such training.

So what would you have done after repeatedly warning some one who is holding two deadly weapons and approaching you to back off and put the weapons down?

There are 4 possibilities to this:

1. Taser him, but it might not effect him, leaving you with a useless club and him with 2 knives.

2. Back out of the house, possibly giving the suspect time to barricade himself and grab a gun.

3. Do nothing, hope he doesn't try to kill you.

4. Shoot to incapacitate.

Keep in mind that today, there is not a single police department in the US, or probably the world for that matter, that trains cops to shoot to wound.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

Thank you good sir at least some one understands

I agree this was justified.

The person was issued multiple warning to drop the knife, it was clearly spoken and loud so you couldn't get it confused. the guy with the knife walked towards the officer (which classes as a threat to the officer). So he took the shot, Police officers are trained to shoot in the torso because if they feel threatened and they shoot, the threat isn't gonna get back up (as Australian police officers are trained "we shoot to stop the threat"). if you shoot him in the leg, the officer would be open to an attack.

The officer didn't shoot because he had a gun and he was a cop.. The officer fired his firearm because he felt threatened.

Honestly, I don't know what to think. I focus more on how weird and horrible it feels to watch a real man die just like that. But, as a police officer (If I were one) I'd been using my gun in this scenario too(pull it out of my holster). This is what I read from a real police officer at the very same forum. And I have to say that I agree with his point.

"I try to share the benefit of my experience working in a large urban department. Based on how we are trained ( I was a taser instructor), the taser should NOT be used in this scenario once the officer entered the residence. If he had dropped the knife and refused further commands, then maybe, IF he has a cover officer.

You gonna tase him and then keep him on the juice while you wait for backup? Then we would have to listen to folks accuse him of torture." - Police officer at the forum.

I think it's hard in these types of situations. You have to kind of live in to the officers situation with a man actually walking towards him (keep in mind that the guy with the knife is actually really close, not more than 3 meters or 9.8 ft).

Edit - Did the man die or ?

well i guess he died since he put 3-4 rounds in his chest, then when he dropped to the ground the officer walked outside to get the girl to calm down. If he was just injured the officer would secure the weapons and cuff him. plus they would've called an ambulance instead calling it Code-4

Yeah, I guess you're right. I just wanted to know for sure. Anyways, I think that it's justified.

I thinks, the cop is a really good person. I liked the way he was convincing the guy to give up, and for me it's obvious he didn't want to harm him. Then, when he saw a knife,  he warned the guy multiple times, and that's really enough to realize you're facing an armed cop and you actually shouldn't, so that wasn't a 'LAPD style' shooting.

I do thinks this was justified. However, I was always asking myself, why can't officers just give him one in the leg, or otherwise make not a lethal shot?.. Is there any kind of instruction for this?

Officers don't shoot people in the leg because then if they're a threat.. the officers or people around them could get injured.

For example the officer shoots the guy in the leg, as he goes down, the officer walks over to cuff him, the suspect pulls out a gun and shoots the officer.

Police officers don't want to kill someone.. But they will if they have too, Police officers have always been trained to shoot if needed. the guy had a knife, you can convince him to drop it (which the officer started to do), as soon as the guy takes that first step with the knife, it's considered a threat so officers are allowed to shoot to kill. Some officers would use a taser or beanbag shotgun because they don't want to shoot to kill. But there wasn't enough time for the officer to go back and get the beanabg shotgun and the officer might not have had a taser (their department might not use them). every department uses different training. but the training for using your gun in a situation like that is the same.

I agree 100%

That was quite hard to watch, but I agree the Police Officer did the right thing, the guy kept walking towards him in a slow and methodical manner like he was planning to do something.

If I had a knife on me (say I was buttering toast when an Officer came in lol) and a cop with a gun yelled at me to drop the knife, I would straight away without question, he's got the gun.

Completely Justified. It is a very hard choice in that type of situation, but if its him or me, I AM going home to my family...

Wow, that's some crazy vid.  Five shots to the torso and that guy went down like a ton of bricks.  Kind of disconcerting to see the guy get killed like that though.  Bam (5X), dead...no words from the guy...nothing.  That's got to get to a cop, when he/she has to kill someone like that.

Anyhow, I digress.  Looks to me like the cop had no alternatives at all.  The officer probably can't retreat any further without loosing LOS, which is never advisable.  Can't use a taser as primary weapon, that's dangerous and very unpredictable if no backup around.  He told the suspect to drop the knives several times, with threat of force evident.  What more can be done?

Side Note:  You guys ever check out some of the vids of cops getting gunned down.  There are some really disturbing vids of these heinous assaults and murder of cops.  I'm sure these vids are used for training purposes, as most of the time you can see when things went wrong...and things always get bad very very fast.  No wonder police are very leery...but sometimes not leery enough.  A difficult tight-rope to walk sometimes, I'd assume.

There's one where two cops are checking a guy at a convenience store, another guy watching walks up and shoots both cops, then walks up to the cops who are laying on the floor dying, takes their guns, shoots the cops again at point blank and runs off.  It's just unbelievable that there are cold blooded murderers out there, maybe standing right next to you.
