Erm, thats not what I've read. From the Steam Community:

 

"To celebrate the holidays in a special way this year, Left 4 Dead 2 will be free until 10AM PST 12/26.

It will be free as in, grab it now, pay no money, and it is yours to keep forever – FOR FREE!"

 

Edit: I thought you meant that it was only free to play for a certain time, and then you'd have to buy it after - like what happened with this game a few months ago. Sorry, you're right!

If you add it to your library now, you will have it forever. It isn't one of those free weekends that Steam does, it's actually free. Also, Steam seems to be running now, it was down for a while due to the heavy load.

I already bought the game years ago. lol I guess it must be a way to promote themselves, like they did with the free Portal download.

That doesn't effect STEAM's download speed much. It's capped on their end to be fair to everyone else. I have a 50mbps connection and I usually hit a ceiling of around 2mbps.
