I have stumbled across a couple YouTube videos done by bigger YouTubers, do you think by this happening LCPD:FR will recieve alot more attention now that it has been reached to way bigger audiances?

I really hope it doesn't. I know that may sound cruel but when ever these big YouTubers do videos on games like this with a fairly small community (give or take a couple thousand) the community gets polluted. I love to use Gmod as an example. Back when GMOD 9 was in existence the community was great and most people were nice, and a nice even spread of gamemodes were up. Once Seananners and everyone started playing it, everyone demanded TTT, and the community was filled with 10 year olds that just bitch about anything. Here on LCPDFR, most of us are mature, and some are even real police officers. If these YouTube videos get to popular image how many trolls, little kids, etc. and other "pollution" will get into the community. This is all just a hypothesis judging from past events, and it seems inevitable. You may disagree or agree with me but my one wish is that Seananners never discovers LCPDFR. Well there's my rant, I know for sure lots of people (especially the developers) will disagree with me.

To be honest, I think this place is already polluted to some degree, most websites are. But that's what happens to every growing online community.

 

More members = more problems. That can be balanced by increasing the staffing, or adding more rules/restrictions (which isn't always the best thing).

 

If the increase in members is composed of good, mature members, then that wouldn't be a problem at all.

 

More attention is always good for a website, that's what I would think. As long as the increase in content is good content, not bad, or "polluted' content, as you said.

All i hope for LCPD:FR and most of it's community is a base of people who take it as we do already from that base, not people who troll or treat it as something it isn't. LCPD:FR is a great mod and i hope the best comes out of this 'publicity' that it is getting.

Honestly I know alot of people from when I played ps3 who really wants to get LCPDFR. The only problem is the money for a computer that can run the game requirements.The way I see it is its always going to grow maybe not In big numbers but there will always be a good amount of people who play and suggest it to there friends and so fourth.So i thing its going to be a always a ever growing community that I can say i'm proud to be apart of.

To be honest, I disagree. LCPDFR is a (mostly) single player experience whereas TTT and other games who suffered from popularity like ArmA II are mostly online. In those games you really need good players who love the game, while LCPDFR can be played just the same no matter how many people are part of the community.

While I wouldn't call this an 'exclusive' community by any stretch of the imagination, it will only grow to a certain point. Most console users who asked about the mod on my YouTube videos can't afford a desktop PC and pretty much give up hope. So we'll probably dodge a bullet with the vast amount of screaming 12 year olds it would bring to this forum board and everyone else's TeamSpeak/Ventrilo/Mumble/Whatever servers. I know there are already people here who are playing GTA IV under age, and some of them are good people. But the way I see it; the more people we have on this forum board with high school diplomas, the better the forum conversations will go.

I make LCPDFR videos on YouTube and I do not intend to bring a negative crowd into the mix. To be honest though I get comments daily asking where to install the game and whatnot and you would be surprised at how many kids can't even find the website lol so at the same time I feel the videos we create gives the game some spark but once these kids find out how complicated modding the game can be they will be turned off thus eliminating some of the "trolls" and more uneducated crowd. That's a good barrier to keep the trolls out is the simple degree of complication it takes to actually get this game going. Most of them wont waste the time. It's not as easy as picking up Modern Warfare and playing. As with any community and any game though you can surely expect to gain some attention from trolls. It's inevitable. I play and showcase my videos because it's fun and there's no other game like it. People truly enjoy watching any lcpdfr YouTuber because this game is that unique. I actually for one hope the community keeps growing. Yeah we will pick up trolls and dead weight from time to time but nothing that we haven't already dealt with!

I think Bojan nailed it, while GMod and TTT are almost 100% online, LCPD:FR doesn't necessarily have to be multiplayer. I'm not too familiar with the LIVE interface, but I'm sure there are ways to prevent immature players from interfering. The negative effects would mainly be on the boards, and I'm sure the administrators can deal with those as they pop up.

I turned off comments on my videos for that reason. I got people asking 'what is this', 'what console is this for', 'is it for ps3', 'is it for xbox', 'how do you do this', etc. every single day, multiple times per day, and that's on top of all the anywhere between 2 to 20 pm's per day I got. A lot of people here (including myself) got here due to a lot of free time surfing around YouTube, but I'll be damned if I haven't noticed that many, many people can't use a simple search engine for the littlest things.

I'll resurrect this as I've been thinking how to explain my concerns about Youtubers bringing in an influx of....shall we say, 'kids' to the forums.

It's frustrating but it happens to every game. As for Seananners, I'm tending to side ver so slightly with him here in that if people want to see LCPDFR they'll demand it, and it's up to him if he wants to put the vids up, he has other games and series on the go. My problem with the big youtubers is the people who ride on their coat tails and whine and bitch. I've looked at that lined video and seen people asking for more (myself included as I've been a fan of Gassy and I generaly know how he plays games), then you got people demanding games, asking for MP sessions and so on. However, the thing that I like about Gassy, Nanners and Diction and the rest is they have moved on from FR, they've gone back to regular IV and its built in MP.

The issue though comes when the kids get on the forum and start trying to force their view across. A classic case is America's Army 3. The game (I hesitate to call it a sim) is paid for by the DOD, and the devs have access to the military weapons and what goes where....yet there's always people (and sadly it's usually teens) who pipe up wanting SMGs because they saw it in a movie or a game so it must happen in real life. Eh no.

I don't want that to happen here to be blunt. I'd rather not wade through hundreds of 'ZOMG ALL COP DEPARTENTS USE CROWN VICS' style topics to find a mod, or witness flame wars because somebody thinks that all cops in NY act a certain way and it gets out of hand. Already seen in Youtube comments on some videos sadly as well.

I'd also argue that simply because IV is a recent(ish, i.e. 2008) game, it needs a good system to run so it isn't as easy as grabbing a 6 year old system and slapping a disc on and playing (though I'm sure somebody, somewhere has gone and made and sold ready to run IV copies with LCPDFR installed. Really wouldn't amaze me sadly), that will deter people from finding it

I wouldn't hesitate to call Americas Army a sim. That game and ARMA were built off of actual military simulators. They don't "play" well, because they weren't originally designed as games. Americas Army was kind of addicting at first, but I don't know how anyone can stand to play it any longer, or how anyone could ever stand to play ARMA at all. The first one was so terrible. It ran like crap even on high end systems, the aiming system sucked, the controls were way too complicated, the graphics were dated and bland, sounds were awful, the install size was huge for maps that were virtually empty and it was full of glitches. It's a sim. Not a game. America's Army rubbed me the wrong way politically because it was used as a recruiting tool.

Regarding the whole community thing, more people are gonna show up here, like it or not. So really it will be up to the moderators and administrators to do their job and weed out the bad from the good. Luckily, as anticipated, this community hasn't "exploded" since the start of this topic. So I don't think we're in very much trouble.

For now, but if somebody like Nanners or Hutch or (God forbid) Pewdiepie discovered LCPDFR and tells people how to get to it, I can quite easily see that their fanbases would come here and start yelling and screaming and demanding changes. That is one of my worst fears for this mod. The classic example is DayZ, there's people who only got ARMA II for DayZ, who want DayZ in Arma 3, who want it ported to every game going (not to mention carrying on a zombie craze).. I'd rather not have Pewdiepie singing this mod's praises and his million fans rushing here to DL and post 'ZOMG THIS MOD IS SO EPIC'. I kind of like it's a mature community really that knows its stuff and is building on top of GTA rather than trying to change GTA

Let's say the mod gets more popular, it'll attract attention both good and bad, all it takes is one lawyer to send a c&d letter to a modder (or you guys at G17 Media) and suddenly the floodgates are open. I know of a few police departments that are extremely protective of their stuff, designs, name and logo. I did a quick Google and found that there's been C&D orders before for other games, and a search for "grand theft auto" cease and desist shows this site as the fifth or sixth result. Which....isn't exactly ideal.

The other one? Lawyers. I highly doubt donut  pd is a copyrighted mark like ford is...

No but a PD that you are making a skin of or a car maker does, it is after all their property and they do have to take steps to defend it else they lose it.

I am aware of at least two cases where IV skinners were intimidated over telephone for creating and releasing Ottawa Police Services liveries. I think its over GPM somewhere, and the skinner has it edited to: 'Link removed due to objection from OPS' or something like that. He was seen discouraging another skinner later on the forums from creating and releasing an OPS livery warning him of consequences.

You'd be amazed.

Ferrari took down a free web game for using their name and images without permission and have gone after people making Ferrari skins before, they do not leave a lot of wiggle room. Look up what happened to BATRacer in 2009 (the game I was referring to), it essentially killed that site.

Porsche have slapped modders with C&D orders and ordered those modders to delete code. So yeah it does happen, Ferrari's lawyers and Porsche's lawyers do not mess around at all.

 

However, take comfort that if you're making plane models or skins, you have a LOT more room to do what you want (with a few, notable exceptions and even then there's ways around it), as airlines don't really care if you paint a British Airways 777, whereas Ferrari would throw lawyers at you for modelling and painting an Enzo without getting a license. It's double standards, sure, but that's how the lawyers operate. I was gonna say companies, but given it's always mailed from the legal firms....ya)

It doesn't need to get to a court though. All it needs is one C&D letter and/or DMCA takedown, no court needed, just the will to send a request or a letter. Whether the infringer agrees with the letter or follows it is another matter, you can be hit with a DMCA claim, counter it then go through the rounds of proving and claiming without setting foot in a courtroom if it's all done online.

As for the whole is is it worth it angle? Yes to protect what is theirs.
