Channel 7 News story on LSPDFR

Hey everyone; Alex Walker here, editor of Kotaku Australia. (Different company to Kotaku in the US, FYI.)

I've been chasing up Channel Seven's "report", if you can call it that. And while I'm waiting to hear back from Rockstar and the NSW Police as to what they might actually do, I'd like to get some more comments from the community about how everyone feels about this.

I pinged a member from the Emergency Australia GTA 4 mods group about this about the Aussie mods, and they've been very helpful. But I'd also like to chat to some others, and if by chance anyone happens to be serving in the emergency services I'd like to hear from you (anonymously if need be) as to your take on LSPDFR and everything that's unfolded.

Thanks, and sorry that everyone's been blindsided by what I think we can all agree is a truly shithouse piece of reporting.

The big issue presented in the report is that it is a highly biased, edited hackjob showing the frankly ridiculous behaviour from GTA 5's AI; lspdfr playthroughs are typically very realistic and non-violent. However the developers of lspdfr/lcpfr can't change the way the game itself was designed to play out, and as such the overly violent parts of these videos used in the clip are just showing the side effects of modifying GTA's AI behaviour which is programmed to freak out and blow things up. The mod itself is very pro-police and has a fantastic community of police enthusiasts. It's just that the game it modifies is itself the problem in that it's hyperviolent GTA, not a simulation like ARMA.

What was that part about the police officer being run over in 2001? Reenacting Need for Speed? That's a load of bull, there's NEVER been pedestrians, yet alone police officers, that you can run over i

  • Holy crap what a joke of a report... The funny thing is I reckon most of the people who play LSPDFR are some of the more pro-police individuals who are probably more sympathetic to the troubles office

It's a shame there isn't a gamer advocacy and law defense group akin to eg. Electronic Frontier Foundation. I don't know much about Aussie law, but I am pretty sure that if gamers could organize, Channel 7 could be sued for libel/slander due to their failure to portray the subject in a truthful and factual manner, as well as attacking the community by painting a false image of it, not to mention outright lying.

I seriously cannot get over the fact of lack of research on this story. The whole point of the mod is to be a cop, hell, even REAL LIFE COPS play LSPDFR.

To add, LSPDFR's main purpose was to let you role play as a cop.  Yes, for a lot of people, they just wanted to play as a cop and be bad cop 24/7, but for most of us, we wanted the role play aspect.  We wanted to be in the shoes of law enforcement either because we can't in real life, we already are law enforcement and just enjoy the option of playing as one, and/or we just wanted to show support for LEOs.

Most people who haven't ever tried RP won't be able to understand how fun and addicting it is.  For me, I'm unable to be a cop due to disabilities.  It's the one thing I so desperately wanted to do.  While LSPDFR isn't a simulator by any means, it's the closest thing I have to being a cop, and I cherish LSPDFR a lot because of it.  I get to put on the uniform, and even in a video game, represent LEOs and try to be a good guy.  LSPDFR was never meant for bad things, it was never meant to be a "lets kill fellow cops!" mod, it was meant to let you be a cop, be a good guy in a game that otherwise has you constantly killing them.

It truly blows my mind, makes me speechless that this has become a huge thing.  For years there has always been the argument "video games make you violent", but people generally brushed this off because of how bullshit it was.  Now a MOD, not a game, a MOD is in the negative spot light and it's like....why?  What year is this?  There are sex mods for Skyrim, you don't hear news losing their shit over that.  There are far worse mods out there, some of which actually glorify very illegal things, yet there's not uproar over that.  No, there's coverage about a fucking police mod.

We really have our priorities in order.

Oh god imagine if they started picking on skyrim mods. They'd be there all month vilifying it. It goes to show they're just doing it for clicks and views, and quite simply couldn't give a shit. If they wanted a real story tell them to visit LL for half an hour and see if they decide to make a story on that.

7News themselves didn't mention any names (However they did neglect to blur @Darkmyre's face, and with the careless way they presented the topic, this could've resulted in real backlash against Darkmyre in real life, possibly have lost his job, been harassed etc..)
So, I feel like even if we did have someone to represent this community, we'd have our hands tied (even though if you are familiar with the mod you can clearly see it *is* LSPDFR being played in the video)

I'm surprised that they were stupid enough to publish something which had such lack of research put through it, but then went about it in a cunning and smart way. I'm confused whether this is a smart or an unbelievably stupid organisation we're dealing with here..

I'm guessing the latter, personally.

The problem is, this is a real story, and it is in the headlines.  It'd be different if it was some small, no name news outlet that got 100-200 views at most.  You're right though, they chose LSPDFR specifically because you can kill police officers if you choose.  The folks that wrote these apparently didn't read the description of what LSPDFR was.

Folks say this about Fox News in the US, doesn't stop people from watching it.

You Filthy hackers.

How could you all be creative in 2017, disgusting geeks corrupting the youth of the world.

Nah. I kind of feel sorry for Channel 7 news, it is difficult to be so out of touch with tehnology to the point where they didnt even know that one of, if not the highest grossing video game is still sold.

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

Hmm, Channel 7 must not have heard of 'The Streisand Effect'.

To the Staff, has there been an upsurge in New Registrations over the last few Hours, or so?

I like how they use the same footage  of 'violent copkilling' over and over again although there is only one instance where people actually get killed.

Obviously Channel7 can't differ between GTA and real life, they actually need a therapy.

I didn't watch such a subjective, manipulative and hatefull report in a long time.

It definitely belongs to the Hall of Shame of TV-reports.

I'm not a lawyer, but I had a look on the website Lawstuff Australia and I found something that maybe useful for Darkmyre. There was a bit about privacy and one section says " If a large business takes a photo/video of you for a commercial purpose (like an advertisement) and you are identifiable in the photo/video they must get your permission to use or post the image online". Now I know Channel 7 is a tv channel, but i'm wondering whether they have broken privacy laws regards to showing Darkmyre's face without his permission.
