You can't really run games off of an external. And I dunno what your current PC is.

Edit: I went down the street to the computer shop in which I purchased all the parts for the computer I use now and they quoted me for top of the line computer with monitor and all that for about $2,100 USD

With the build I put together here from newegg.com I came to roughly $1,400 USD with shipping

Ask them if you can't buy the pieces yourself and give to to them to build it.

If you can't go for the 600 Series (which is the most recent series), go for the 500.

Solid 500 cards are the 590, 580, 570 and 560 Ti. I recommend ASUS.

Do not get the 400 or 200 Series, those are outdated.

but will the 1gb ones give me problems when it comes to texture mods and high poly cars

They can. I have a 2GB video card and I'm having more problems than my last one which was 1.2GB of memory.

If I had that much money to purchase a graphics card, I'd probably go for an Nvidia GTX 660, like the one linked below;

They are quite impressive and will be able to run almost all modern games on high settings without breaking a sweat.  Note that the card is relatively large though, so be sure you have enough space in your case.

why/how would it give you more problems? should I reconsider a 2GB? I apologize if it seems to be a stupid question..not very computer savvy..Be Safe~Ficdawg

Generally, the more vidmemory the better, however some games *cough GTA IV cough* are just damn bad at memory handling.
