Thoughts?

I dunno, I was kinda divided over it. He deserved death, but I also think that the death penalty was too good for him, so he could rot away his life in a prison cell.

bruh moment

In my opinion, the death penalty is the easy way out. Unless it's gonna be a firing line or electric chair, a needle doesn't do justice for what he did. I'd rather have him serve life

I agree. also part of me feels like even the nastiest people in the world don't deserve to die. not only is it too good for them but i feel like it sends the people a message that death is a way to get rid of people who hurt us. i would rather him be tortured in a way that is relevant to what he did to other people. that way he feels the same amount of pain equivalent to someone performing CPR on the person next to them while a fragmented piece of metal is jabbed in their left leg.

So much focus on vengeance, and none on the circumstances of the case. He'll likely become a martyr.

true. one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter. but has there been a way to prevent someone from being a martyr throughout history?

Has anyone put in prison for life been martyred?

It might sound redundant, but radicalism isn't a rational decision. Mentally unstable people look for something to fight for, which is why we're seeing so many crazy young people joining ISIS. They used to join Al-Qaeda, but some crazy people are easily impressionable and look for a new movement to join, or a martyr to look up to. There will always be radicalism in our world, but that doesn't mean we should feed in to it with our own emotion and vengeance.

Many of the Bostonians are in favor of a life sentence. Have they even thought about how much it will cost to keep this terrorist alive for the next 60-70 years? Money will come from their taxes in order to pay for his cost of living. Also, if they put him in for life, don't keep him separated. Put him in with the general population and he will quickly learn that he's not so tough after all.

While I 'support' the death penalty, I think it's time to abolish it. It's archaic and does nothing to deter crime, and as someone said above this guy will become a martyr for Islam, and as evidence of the "evil western powers". I'm more in favor of non-torture, Guantanamo style detainment or ADX-Florence. Lock em up for 23 hours a day with no human contact in a soundproof cell, with CC tv, and let them in their individual outdoor "concrete swimming pools" for the one remaining hour.  Give them just enough luxury to prevent their mind from breaking, allowing them to be fully aware at how deprived they will be for the rest of their life.

I feel like this would only attract some sort of attention from left wing human rights groups that enjoy supporting terrorists, condemning it as in humane and wrong. This is a sort of mental torture and we'd probably be criticized for it I'm sure. A great idea nonetheless though.

Whatever the government does it attracts the kind of attention you described. Execute a criminal - oh god government kills people what if he's innocent u can't kill him he repents. Lock them up in Gitmo - oh god you violate their human rights and torture them close all prisons now. So where's no way out of this, I think.

From the punishment point of view I support life time incarceration too. Of course, if America comes to where Norway is, having prison cells equipped like a hotel, incarceration won't deter anyone.

It's also amazing how some people say that we should just nuke the entire middle east. Just wipe out the entire land area and bomb any communities of survivors.

Less than executing him, quite likely. Death sentences are incredibly expensive.

Actually that's a big topic of debate between proponents and opponents of the death penalty with extreme opponents saying it costs more than $75 million more LWOP and extreme proponents saying it's actually way less.

A 'general consensus' accepted by both sides is that the death penalty only actually costs about $1-7 million more than LWOP (Assuming that the case moves along the courts and doesn't get hung up in the process for years), which isn't that much more when considering the whole cost of LWOP can be around $50-70 million or upwards of $100 million depending on the age of the convict. In fact, if we were able to streamline death penalty cases and come up with a far more effective means of execution, we could probably get the cost down to only hundreds of thousands more than LWOP or even less than LWOP.

Remember, $1M more than LWOP is more than LWOP. Even if it's comparable, that still goes against the "think who's going to pay for this" argument for death. 1ian20 seemed of the opinion it was way cheaper to execute; it's not, and even at the lowest estimates it's pretty comparable.

I don't think it really matters how much it costs. If it's a terrorist and they've killed innocent people, then they should be evicted from this planet.
