Sweden Changes Bird Names In Fear of Racism

Featured Replies

You don't have to read the article to understand what's going on. Not really much to explain here, unless you're retarded. In that case, I'll go ahead and explain in great detail so that even an idiot can understand what the article is about.

According to this article, bird watching is fairly popular is Sweden. It's always been seen as a very harmless and innocent activity for bird lovers, but this activity may be compromised. For centuries, Sweden gave names to birds that could potentially be offensive to certain groups. These bird names included gypsy bird, negro, Kaffer (A derogatory term used by White South Africans against Blacks), and Hottentot. More information on how these words are supposedly racist is in the article. Sweden plans on changing the names of several of these birds.

What do you all think of this? Is this even worth being reported on? Is this a big deal?

It's a bird people! No big deal.

I agree, the only thing is that we can't just name birds anything. In this case, I don't really see this as a serious issue. Maybe this is something on Sweden's top priority list, definitely not for the US.

I can already see the impending circlejerk, so I'll make my remarks and take a seat on the sidelines.

This is harmless. If the bird was named in an obviously racist way, what harm is there in changing the name? It's a name. It serves no purpose other than to designate the animal in a common way, rather than the Latin name.

This is not true due to Political correctness or political correctitude[1]

"We can't name this bird a certain name because it will offend this group of people".

MODERATOR NOTICE

Thread cleaned. Do try to stay on topic, please.

Thanks I didn't need to hire a maid to clean up that mess.

At the end of the day, just change the damned name. It's not that big of a deal and nobody seem to have any issue with it. Just do it and be done with it Sweden, just do it.

Meh. Our Government and media is so scared of offending people, they change content of our kids shows, they change bird names, they prohibit the Swedish flag because goddamn it could be racist! Honestly, I am not surprised this is taking place, and it's just one thing among many.

Oh yes, a few schools are restricting the usage of the Swedish flag since it could be seen as offensive.

Excuse my ignorance. I'm not from Sweden so I'm like a child with this topic, but... How could your own nations flag be seen as offensive to your own nation? I just do not understand. A bird name maybe but your own flag? That seems disrespectful to me.

It's because about 7-10% of Sweden's population is Immigrants, and because of that Sweden is a "Multicultural" country.

At the end, we give Swedes over 15 Billion SEK's to legal immigrants every year, which is ridiculous, when we could use that money to help it with sanctions and similar stuff where it's needed.

But, our current Social Democratic government wont do that because that is what the Swedish Democratic Party wants to do, to reduce immigration to Sweden.

The Swedish Democratic Party is often called racist because of that, among other things, and if the Social Democrats would do the same the would be called 'racists' for decades to come.

Everything in this country is waaaay to politically correct, and if you say one thing about immigration you will be classed as a racist.

The political correctness in this country is just dumb. You cannot really have no other opinion then let all the immigrants in unless you want to be called a racist.

And some schools here has even forbidden to sing psalms at the graduations, because some immigrants can be offended. Same with birds.

I bet in 10 years that we cannot even call "Koltrast" (Common Blackbird) that because well, kol=Coal=black=racist.

And no, I am not a racist, I just think we should be allowed to say what we want.

tl;dr: Stupid scared political correct country. Urgh.

I'm thinking of launching Tours of Freedom for Europeans to Russia. Here you can say what you want, do what you want, offend anyone you want, break all the laws, beat up some cops, drink, smoke, shoot -- and that all  for only $999,99!

Seriously tho, I know there's a nice Swedish dish called Negerbol. I enjoyed it when I was in Stockholm. I guess it's outlawed now too?
