Windows 10 upgrade will be free

Featured Replies

"Fresh news from Microsoft's painfully aspirational Windows 10 briefing. Owners of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 will be eligible for a free upgrade to Microsoft's upcoming OS. The free upgrade will be available throughout the first year of Windows 10's life."

Now that sounds interesting, at least we'll be able to test it out without paying the license.

Honestly it's a bit too soon for a Windows upgrade, so I'll probably stay on Windows 8. Release date somewhere near the end of 2015, btw.

i am so excited. i had heard last year that it was possible existing customers were going to get it free..so this was awesome to hear :D

I was reading an article about this announcement earlier, I'm actually excited that it's going to be a free upgrade after the mess that is Windows 8. I'm so glad they're bringing a real start menu back.

So upgrading to Windows 10 might cause PC games to be "unstable"? As I assume. Until they make updates that work with Windows 10. Idk. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Upgrade only or clean install? Windows upgrade upgrades your system like a sledge hammer maintains your hard drive! Maybe an "upgrade" then clean installing with the same key will work.

No subscriptions, eh? Look at that Adobe, even M$ can manage not ripping off people.

You are using the WRONG right theme!

Basically, Windows 10, Microsoft's newest OS to be later in the year, will be Microsoft's first major OS Release since the disaster of Windows 8/8.1, which was so bad, it forced the then current CEO to "Retire". The OS Will be available as a one time upgrade for 7, 8.1, and 8.1 mobile users for the first year after Windows 10 release.

How's Windows 10 for gaming? Nothing can be said for sure besides the fact it will support DirectX 12, so Windows 7 users, if you want to play the latest games, you better upgrade because Windows 7 will not be supported.

Will the Windows 10 launch be a complete and utter failure like ME, Vista, 8/8.1? Will you upgrade straight away or wait to see the product reviewed?

I'm a little skeptical, but Microsoft really has to make a good product here because everyone is looking down on them after 8/8.1 (Btw, an OS I actually use and enjoy greatly), they better get back to their more conventional roots of a Start Button, Desktop Apps and Icons, Windows Explorer, and no Live Metro Tiles and other garbage like that. The company took a bet several years ago by thinking the PC Market was dying and make a combined Phone/Tablet/PC OS, which definitely went into the books as one of Microsoft's greater launch failures, as the PC Market is booming, yet mobile sales, especially tablet, and starting to stay steady instead of growth.

I miss half of them too, so it's not just you. Lucky the merge tool exists. :P

Thanks for catching my mistake, although now my post looks misplaced. Oh well, better than having 50+ topics of the same thing.

I figured I'd merge it as you provided a valid opinion on the matter, so it didn't seem fair to lock it. You can always edit your post to remove some content to make it look less out of place if you so choose.

'If its not broke don't fix it'   I'll be with windows 7 until there is no support, my computer is 5 years old now, just put a new graphics card in to be able to play GTAIV Lcdpfr, runs fine... Spent about 1 week, getting it all to run, and the mods I wanted, not tempted by windows 8 or 10 .... Really, does it really make you games any better, I know windows 10 and only windows 10 will support DX12, but wih all the fafing to get games to run properly, again if its working the way you want it to ... leave it alone?

DX12 will be supported with Windows 8.1, but not Windows 7 or 8.

Additionally, upgrading to Windows 10 isn't about getting games to run properly, it's about adapting to new standards and not being left in the dust when new titles requiring DX12 are released.

I have Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 all installed on seperate SSDs and I've played games on all of them except Windows 10, and Windows 7 is noticeably slow, not so much for games but just overall usage. Makes sense though, it was designed for older hardware and software standards and just won't keep up with modern titles.

I just want to know, since its a new version of windows, will it be able to run verisions of games that need windows 7 or 8?

The vast majority of games designed for Windows 7 and Windows 8 will run without problem in Windows 10, unless Microsoft really screws something up. so stay tune.
