Grand Theft Auto V Banned From Target Australia!

Featured Replies

I'm seeing some feminist bashing here, I find it quite disturbing that people here are making fun of feminism, not cool guys.

Anyways cases like these are complicated, this petition is both good and bad, you have to actually look at the sides of both candidates. While I do agree that double standards are bad and should not exist, please understand that this is a very complicated case and you can't just boil it all down to one solution or simple opoioin, violence has always existed in the GTA industry and the people that created this petition are not saying get rid of GTA and entirely, but just get rid of the game from one specific store. Just beware people not all parents are necessarily good at picking games for there children and often make simple mistakes when doing so.

There's violence against men too in GTA V, but nobody gives a shit about that, right?

  • Actually no, there isn't.. the only time the word man or men were involved in the petition is when they said about men being violent towards women. Even from target, all they said was about violence a

That's what I'm saying, nobody gets pissed when men are the target of violence, but as soon as women are the target the shit hits the fan. It's one of those ridiculous double standards deals.    I b

We should ban Call Of Duty too. Soldiers are being shot in that game!

Ban Gran Turismo too, cars are breaking traffic rules in that game!

Good reading people here still know what they're talking about though.

I buy all my games from JB Hi Fi anyway so this doesn't affect me but it's still stupid.

I watched a social experiment video about this exact thing, a while ago, thanks to a Facebook friend sharing the video on their timeline.

Edit: Apparently the video doesn't exist anymore....

HA! Reminds me how I got Grand Theft Auto IV on PS3. I was at Walmart and I asked my mom for it and she didn't realize it was rated 'M' till' dinner when my sister looked at the cover. Then I got GTA 5...

And I haven't turned into a mass women beater type human alien thing. Fact, face-to-face I'm shy a heck and I'm terrible when it comes to women especially dating.

They have also now banned it from K-Mart Australia.. Only because it's owned by the same people who own Target.

On both their FB pages.. people are now essentially protesting and spamming every post to get GTA V back on the shelves. I just hope EB Games (or Gamestop for Americans) doesn't ban it aswell.. Because i have the PC version pre-ordered from there (even though it's extremely unlikely they will ban it since they ask for ID for games like this and MA 15+ games.. they also warn the parents about the violent when they're young aswell).

If both Target and K-Mart did the same system as EB Games, then games wouldn't be banned.. The whole point of Australia fighting to get the R18+ rating was so we could have these games in retail stores for us to buy, what's the point of having the rating if they're just going to remove the games from the shelf anyway?

If you want to me reply as soon as possible, then either quote or @CouthInk4  me as i'll be notified, a general reply will not notify me

Yes, K-Mart and Target are both owned by Wesfarmers.

Unfortunately, it would seem to be a case of two steps forward, and one step back.

Cheers.

It's always the same with videogames. We live in the year 2014 (almost 15) and still videogames are not getting the respect they deserve. People still try to but ya down for beeing a gamer. It's art people. Nobody gives a fuck about movies and music..but videogames. No sir! Toys made by the Devil! Why not burn them? And all gamers along with it! People need to understand that games are not murder simulators but art. They express the thoughts and the ideas of the Dev's in a way no other media can do. It's time to understand that. Banning GTA V will not stop violence against women. It will not reduce the numbers of rapes and murders. It won't stop school shootings and it will not make you a better parent if u sign such a petition. It only will bring the internet hate army to your door step. Banning GTA V actually hurts feminsm because it makes people think of it as a bad thing. Which is a shame.

Heck I dont care about the violence, I know its not something that would influence me to go out and be a mass murderer. Why arent these people boycotting movies, and TV shows that have dead women in them? Stuff like this, grinds my gears.

This actually made me remember & notice something.

I've played many "gory" games like L4D2, "GTA:IV", Mafia II, RE:6, etc.  Never did all the blood & violence disturb me, not even a teeny-tiny bit.

But now I remember that one episode of House when (spoiler) 13 & Foreman found Kutner, who had shot himself in the head (after being depressed for years). Fuck. When that happened, it disturbed me, even tho the head was never shown, just a body with a blood pool & the doorway covering the head & chest areas. I started to feel weird, awkward & sad. Just now when I thought of that scene, I realized that no game ever got such a reaction from me.

I think it's because with TV shows & movies, what you're seeing is as real as it can get & over time (esp. in TV shows), you get an actual emotional attachment to the characters. Games still have got that unconscious sensation of "This isn't real".   Ironic.

If my post made you laugh (or giggle) in any way, smash that blue grey "Like this" button & like it

They're actually now trying to ban it from Big W, So my guess is they're trying to take the game out all together. Plus it's not feminists that are doing it.. it's middle aged women who haven't touched a game and only know about the game from pictures or what they've read.

Then there is the retailers who don't review the game and play it for a bit.. they just read the petition, believe it and take action. Target have also said that they'll continue to stock OTHER R18 games and movies and only removed GTA 5 because of it's sexual violence.

mind you, in the movies part of the statement, it also includes TV Shows.. so Games Of Thrones will still be available which is worse than GTA V, so what is the point of banning one but not the other?

Plus.. who pulls stuff off the shelves this close to Christmas? they've just created a massive problem, and are now losing money because of it.

My guess Steam set this thing up to get more money being the only GTA V distributor in Australia.

On a serious note, I wonder why did the management agree to this. They won't get any good reputation for this for sure.

Target isn't the only GTA V distributor, there is about 5 other stores that sell GTA V (in tassie atleast). And no, they won't get a good rep from it.. over 5k comments on their FB post and essentially all are saying that they won't shop their anymore.

Seems stupid, I mean I've killed a lot of people on GTA, and 70% of them were NOT women.

Secondly, one brand of store in one couldn't stop this game from selling. I don't know how many different stores are in Australia, but we have 4-5 different stores in NI, and that's a tiny part of the UK, not including video game stores in England, Scotland, Wales, etc.

Causing Chaos since 2006

Here's another odd one for you.... Many different movies/T.V. shows have scenes in which young children are murdered in many violent ways. But video game companies have to fear even putting children characters in games at all. When will it end? Is Halo offensive to Aliens? Banned! HA HA HA!!!!! I say if you want something in your game put it in there. When you have the guts to just put it in there without fear of what others will complain about, you'll typically have good sales because your game becomes a talking point. That's what made GTA successful in the first place. That's what also made Doom successful. I still remember the local news demonizing GTA 3, saying it was too violent and realistic. What happened? Sales, sales and more sales. If you become worried about pissing someone off, you'll end up pissing everyone off by toning the violence down so much that it becomes an "E" rated game. (US Rating) If you make an exception for one group, you must make it for the rest that follow.

TotalBiscuit did a good video on this here. It basically sums up my thoughts on this issue pretty nicely. It's absolute bullshit. If kids are playing GTA, it's the parent's fault. No one else's.
