Me being an African-American myself, I can't say that I'm surprised on these statistics. We do have a lot of issues going on in our community, but 80% is a bit terrible.

You are very true because i am black as well but this was a bad topic to start because i have a feeling someone going to comment something very stupid. Then again not all African Americans are bad, like me i wanna be a police officer and i am almost at that point. There is some good in the world in every race.

The system is racist.. Not as extreme as it used to be, but it is. So the number is horribly inflated due to harsher punishments imposed, DA prosecutorial discrimination, plea bargains, etc.

All you have to do is take a criminology or Sociology class and it explains it.

But I agree. Someone is going to say something dumb and racist. Would actually have refrained from posting it.

Its not race, its location. A majority of crime happens in densely populated urban areas with low cost housing. It just so happens that a lot of African Americans live in these types of areas. Its not more the race than it is the location 

Race has almost nothing to do with it, it's social factors that influence that. Now I'm not American but spent almost a year in Baltimore studying law down at BU. My apartment was on Eutaw place, next to North Avenue, the gang place. As you may know, B-More is 65% black. I got familiar with many people from totally different places: some drug dealers from corners, some addicts, my landlady and her family, cops, lawyers, and even an assistant DA from BC court. 

 

I never forget that one evening I exited at wrong metro station and found myself in a totally unfamiliar neighborhood with vacants, many people arguing and all that. While I was standing there and looking around I was approached by a black guy in this baggy clothes and bandana who looked like a typical movie gangster who said "Yo, you lost or something? It's danger for you to be here, let me show you the way". 

 

And he actually walked me to the Druid Hill lane and there he found a patrol car, and the officer who was black too had actually driven me to my home! I never had any troubles during the time in Baltimore, living in this area. Only once I was stopped at night at North Avenue at gunpoint. Guess who was it? Correct, the police in an unmarked unit. And they were white :D

 

But shit, when people grow up in those shit-houses and all they see it drug trade and they in that since they can walk and really cannot assess what are they doing, how can you expect them become law-abiding taxpayers after they grow up? It takes a lot of guts to change your life like that. And I never checked but I guess a drug seller earns more in hour than a mcdonalds cleaner, so there's no financial motivation either. There sould be something in the society which attracts young people: things like respect of the community, satisfaction from doing good things, family, love, all that.

Race does play a factor. While yes location does play a factor, race plays a factor as well. It's been proven in studies through the years.

Crime is crime no matter the number. You'll find that these numbers are pretty high in white communities as well. You also have to take into consideration the the number is also compiled with Latino groups. So of course the number will be higher. Just like the homicide rate for white's is higher than blacks. So it all depends on white crimes are in question. However again crime is crime no matter how you look at it. Race does not matter.

In all honesty, I think each race has a certain way of behaving. But then again, I have not done any research so this could be incorrect, it is my opinion. Are there different people in every race? YES. I have plenty of African American friends. I go to a school in a relatively low income area and there are many African Americans and Hispanics at my school. I am friends with some of them. If anyone pulls the race card on me, I will be very displeased. This is just my honest opinion so I ask that you do not take this offensively if you are an African American.

Coming from an Asian I don't think that's true. I suck at math.

When I said low income, I was not insisting that all African Americans/Hispanics were low income families. That was just a detail. Like I said, I am far from being racist. I enjoy everyone's company. I just think different races have different cultural backgrounds, which leads to different behavior, good or bad. There are good and bad of every race. I live in a middle class area but my school is in a low income area.

 

Here's what it really is folks, being politically correct never answers questions, neither does racism.

Prior to "Gangster Rap", whites held the majority of the crime rate and were the majority in the prison system by far. So if it really was racist white people, which are always blamed for everything, then blacks would have ALWAYS held the majority crime rate. But this is not the case. Within 4 years of the gang culture running through the country, the crime wave in the black communities exploded (not talking about Compton LA, that's another story) Nationwide. Ever since, that number has been increasing at a very fast pace. So the problem here isn't black people themselves, it isn't white people or any other race. It's impressionable teens that watch television and music videos, think these gang bangers are cool (I know because I was a Crip for 7 years, I get the culture) and try to emulate them. Simple as that. That is the sole reason it all exploded, causing some white people to wrongfully think it's because they're black, and most black people to actually think that white people somehow did this to them. We need to STOP this whole white vs. black bullshit. If you want racism to end (as I do) then stop bringing it up and declaring racism at every fucking event black folks!!!!! As for whites, wake up and realize that white people do some of the same stupid shit, stop blaming black people for all the crime and realize that it's the damn media that has done this, NOBODY ELSE.

Poverty stricken people are more likely to commit crime. The topic is worded poorly in the fist place. No race is more prone to commit crime. But Becasue discrimination is still rampant in the US minorities will continue to be among those who commit the most crime because A) They're forced into poverty due to discrimination for jobs and/or B) the law just discriminates plainly.

A quick Google search would give you all you need to look at. Just Google" Poverty as it relates to crime ". If I give you a source it's biased one way, or in the other way. So read all the pages you get. It's pretty much accepted in the study of Criminal Justice.
