Microsoft's Windows 10 preview

Recommended Posts

If you've been looking forward to Windows 9, the OS that will fix what Windows 8 got wrong, you're in for a surprise: There will be no Windows 9. Instead, Microsoft announced it will proceed directly to Windows 10. Thanks to many leaks leading up to Microsoft's reveal about its next version of Windows, there wasn't a whole lot that those of us who've been paying attention didn't know. But Microsoft execs did provide a few updates about the operating system known as Windows Threshold.

The full-screen Start menu is gone (sort of). The touch-focused interface has given way to that familiar, utilitarian keyboard-and-mouse-driven experience we've known from time immemorial. Those newfangled "Modern" apps aren't even full-screen anymore, unless you want them to be. Windows 10 is shaping up to be a retread of all the things we've known for years, a mea culpa that aims to welcome those who fled in terror at the sea change that was Windows 8. But it's also far more than that, and this sneak peek offers us a look at a Microsoft OS that will play well with all of our devices.

Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One. Office 2010, 2013, 365. Windows 7, 8, 10.  Microsoft cannot count.

If they make the upgrade from 7 cheap when it first comes out like they did with 8 (or if it is free like I read it might be, more likely for just 8 users and not 7 users though), then maybe I'll upgrade. Maybe.

I really like it. While I'm not a fan of the metro interface, it's probably the best we're going to get. Windows is changing, as with any other company. Windows 8, tried making the OS cross-platform. People didn't like that. So, with Windows 10, they made it the best of both worlds. They added small changes to make it custom to the platform. Desktop users keep their Start Menu, while those who liked the Metro UI can still access it with ease. Tablets, phones, and touchscreens keep the Windows 8 UI, which makes sense for touch screen devices.

I'm really excited for the multiple desktops. I'm used to doing multiple things at once, and this will really help. I don't know when I would use the four window quadrants but I'm sure users with high resolution displays will enjoy it.

No thanks, I'll stick to Ubuntu 12.04LTS on my laptop. Instead of snapping 4 things on my screen at once, I can literally have 4 workspaces at once.

Well it's just that windows takes all the new stuff and just leave it as that, doesn't put anything original Into the product, kinda like tv's, back then tv's had an on and off timer, nowadays no tv has that feature anymore, I'm really hoping with this new product they add some originality.

This is basically Windows 7 with a "redesigned" Start menu and features that were introduced in UNIX-based systems about 20 years ago.

Nah, seriously, I think it looks promising. I can't see why you guys are complaining about it so much. 'Cause it looks more like Windows 8 than Windows 7? Come on, 7 is 5 years old, it's time for change, right?

I think I'll just stick with Windows 7 for now. Then when this becomes incompatible, I'll consider upgrading to Windows 8.

^This. I've been using Windows 7 since it came out on a fresh laptop, then picked up another computer with Windows 7 1 year ago, and if I had to choose right now or when this Windows 10 will come out, I'll as well choose Seven. Windows 7 is for me the best OS I've been using since XP. It's fast, stable, and compatible with almost everything. In 5 years of use, I didn't have a single blue screen or system bug. Not a single one.

Well, as a reminder, I'd like to say that Windows XP came out in 2001, and Microsoft support for this OS stopped only in April 2014. Windows XP survived 13 years and many OS, with only Seven being able to catch up to its level of ergonomy and stability. Believe me, Seven will stay here for a good couple of years. Five years is nothing in an OS lifetime when this one is well made.

Windows 10. What windows 8 should have been but microsoft fucked up.

If the upgrade from 8 is free I'll be getting this for my laptop because I'm not a fan of 8 at all. My desktop will remain windows 7 until it dies.

Windows 10 looks pretty nice to my eyes. If it is compatible with all of the games I play, I will consider upgrading after it is out and has been out long enough to smooth out it's release bugs.

Don't forget that Microsoft has recently announced that mainstream support for Windows 7 will end on January 7th (while the end of extended support is scheduled for 2020).

The main reason why XP lasted so long is because many companies haven't upgraded their systems to Vista, 7 or 8, and it is still widely used (not only by companies).

I'm not saying 7 sucks, my gaming PC still runs it, but if you want to be able to run the most recent software (from Microsoft, at least), you'll soon have to upgrade.

Sadly, every good thing comes to an end.
