  • Bohan is equivalent to a Saturday night out in Sydney's Kings Cross... Probably even worse than Bohan.   I think every state/country has a place like Bohan.. Everywhere has the bad part of town.

  • AdamP nailed it. NYC was ROUGH back in the day. Now it's more tourist-trappy, but as has been stated there are still some areas that most would consider "rough". Parts of East New York spring to mind.

MODERATOR NOTICE
Moving to General Discussion.

There are some bad areas in NYC from what I have gathered but I doubt it's nearly as bad as in GTA IV, since R* has a way of adding way more crime than normal into games.

I'll let someone who actually lives in NYC be the official judge.

Indeed, R* adds more crime to Liberty City since it is a condensed version of NYC.

Anyway, Bohan (http://www.grandtheftwiki.com/Bohan) is based on The Bronx, which has a very high crime rate in some areas. Read on (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx).

Liberty City is modeled after New York, which is a crime ridden city in many of its sections, Bohan as said by someone else, is a parody of The Bronx, one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. If you'd like to hear about some of the day to day policing there, visit a website or download an app for your phone that has police scanners from around the world. There are several channels for New York City. I downloaded 'Scanner Radio' a few years ago, and the first time I tuned into 'The Bronx' area command, there was a police pursuit of a stolen car going on at 8am in the morning. Some cities are worse, but not many. Miami Florida is the murder capital of the U.S., Los Angeles California is the police pursuit capital of the U.S., Washington state is the crystal methamphetamine capital of the U.S., etc.

Poor folks indeed.

Australia is just as bad... like the outer Sydney. Claymore is definitely the worst in terms of safety. But the inner west is the best place in Sydney in my opinion, yes it may have a higher crime rate and smaller houses than in the north and east. But the diversity of people and class only makes it more interesting and I would much rather that than be surrounded by posh wankers like in the north shore.

Washington DC also has a lot of crime; I've heard it called the "murder capital of the US" as well (being the *actual* capital of the US probably contributes to that as well, though).

It may change depending on the year and all that. I don't like the idea of going into certain parts of Boston due to their reputation. 2009 had a bunch of murders across three townships all bordering on each other, and although there have been less in the last few years, that doesn't mean I'll be visiting any time soon.

Bohan is a parody of the Bronx, as Unreal pointed out.  That is a very very bad area from what the chauffeurs have stated when I've been to NYC.  None would even drive through the Bronx during the day even.

Detroit's pretty bad.  My buddy lived at Mound/7mile in the mid-nineties, and when I'd go over there, I'd have my .45 at all times, and my buddy would be patrolling his yard with his 870 Remington, chasing dudes out of his garage constantly.  One night, we were outside and there was a gun fight one street over, for about 3-minutes straight.  Funny thing, we didn't hear any cop sirens for about 2-hours after that.

Those areas are out there in real life.

Oh my goodness! Our police dont even carry guns here! Its wierd to hear you say you had your .45 with you all the time! So foreign to us in the land downunder!

I guess what we see on the movies then is not so far form the truth!

One question... have you ever had to use the gun at all?

I guess what we see on the movies then is not so far form the truth!

The movies make it appear a lot worse than it really is. There aren't shootouts every day, but it's easy to become a victim if you present yourself as one, and let yourself be one. I'll give you an example. I live near Boston, not nearly as big or as crime ridden as New York, but there is a good amount of crime there in certain areas as it's one of the major U.S. cities with access to the Atlantic Ocean, and a major air port. We've also had a major change in racial makeup over the last 40 years which has turned turned the tables on what gangs control what towns and who commits what types of crimes. Let me show you this mini map:

Boston2.gif

The metro Boston area, with all of the restaurants and shopping centers, and Fenway Park, those are all fine. I'd feel comfortable enough walking around there without any weapons or any martial arts or general fighting experience. But if you look at that map, I would not feel safe in any of the towns listed without a gun except for Alston, Brighton, Fenway, the North End and East Boston. Every other section on that mini map has a high crime rate. It's expected, it's a big city, but it's gotten worse over the last 40 years. Mattapan, Roxbury, Hyde Park and Jamaica Plain are predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods now. They are run down and are where the majority of the violent crimes in the city happen. I'm White, I drive a relatively nice vehicle, and I'm not from there, so I would be a good target for a robbery if I were walking down the sidewalk not knowing exactly where I was, or pulled over on the side of the road trying to see where I am on my GPS. Robbery's can quickly turn into something else at the drop of a hat. Needless to say, you probably wouldn't find me in any of those towns for any reason.

And again, that's Boston. New York and Los Angeles would worry me even more. I'd try not to place myself in a situation where I could be a victim of a crime in the first place, but if it's not avoidable, you should have the tools you need to protect yourself and your valuables. Criminals don't usually get their weapons through legal means, so it's easy for them to carry. If someone is attempting to commit a crime that could involve violence, assume they have a weapon. So being a registered gun owner and knowing even the basics of how to use it goes a long way. If someone came up to you with a knife, and you simply pointed a pistol in their direction, chances are they'd run. If you don't have a weapon but you know how to fight or are trained in martial arts, that goes a long way too if you're on foot. When you get robbed or jumped, it's usually by several people. Most guys won't square off with you one on one like in the movies. So fighting skills help. But to re-iterate, the best thing is to just simply not go to those neighborhoods. Let those people assault and rob each other.

Chicago can be like that too. Just drive along Cicero and you'll get the gist of what I mean. Even kids intentionally jumping in front of cars to make trouble. There is also the South Side which I understand is truly dangerous.

Down here in Orlando, we also have the Union Park and Pine Hills (usually referred to as Crime Hills.) Those neighborhoods especially have a reputation for some serious crime, and if you drive down SR 50, you'll see tons of OCSO or OPD responding code three in groups to scenes, and not too rarely with helicopter backup. Of course, it isn't nothing like those larger cities listed above. I mean, you can still get through town, just stay on the main roads. Of course, communities can always get better. Parramore still has a reputation for crime, but it isn't anything like before Val Demmings became OPD Chief. Still, not the type of neighborhood you'd wanna be in, especially after dark. Then there is Rio Grande Ave. You just don't drive on that road after night at all, and I mean the whole stretch from Washington St. to Holden Ave. Americana Blvd, which is close by to Rio Grande Ave. on the Holden Ave. Side is a place you also don't wanna find yourself walking around at night too. Tangelo Park is another well known example of a neighborhood you don't wanna be in at all at night. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the Skylake South and Whisper Lakes areas used to be a HUGE hotbed of Latino Gangsters, especially from the NYC area (and the Bronx actually, which Bohan is based off of). I have noticed that it has largely cooled down now though and went back to being the working class neighborhood it was in earlier parts of the 1990s.

The town of Sanford north of us is like that too, there is Washington Oaks (once, Sanford PD (whom has a reputation amongst the populace for being rather derpy) ended up re-directing traffic into there and someone got shot to death) and Goldsboro. Both are Primarily Black Neighborhoods, and are particular hotspots for crime. You can't even grow vegetables in Sanford without someone coming up and stealing them. Believe me, I have a few friends who tried. Have a potted Plant or even plants in the ground, and they'll be gone before you know it!

Of course, districts like the Bronx, South Central LA (at least in the early 1990s), Detroit, and Chicago's South Side, are exceptions. I mean, you can walk around in the Orlando neighborhoods I described above around the day (well, maybe not Crime Hills and Rio Grande), and be ok for the most part. The most you would likely encounter on a average day is a homeless person asking for money or damn idiot high on his own supply trying to push their product on you!

*Cough* South central in Los Angeles *Cough*

Los Angeles used to be the real "murder capital" of the US. It had around 500 murders per year, topping Chicago on the list. Being a cop in the gang areas of Los Angeles is a really tough job.

Just the fact that there are (approximatley) 10 000 more gang members (450 active gangs in LA) than police officers ( and Sheriff's deputies) in Los Angeles is another thing on the list... There are around 9 000 LAPD officers in total, being that, remember that not all of them patrol the city. Then we have the LASD with around 18 000 deputies. However, a lot of the deputies go to the court system and the county jails.

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Los-Angeles-California.html

However, these days LA is actually startning to clean up pretty good with the police and what not. The biggest problem they have right now I would say, is all the homeless people.

A city which people often seem to forget is Miami. E.G. Little Haiti etc. Miami is actually quite criminal if you go to the wrong places.

For those of you whom are intrested in a little more about LA, and criminal big cities of the US, I really recommend watching the tv-series I linked in the spoiler.

Sadly, chronic cases of homeless people tends to be an issue anywhere the average yearly temp is above 70F. I mean, central FL has it pretty bad too across all the towns on this count.

Most of here in Florida constantly joke about Miami, especially with it being the hub for the Drug Trade that it is (from what I have been told by folks from there, outside South Beach, it isn't really the nicest place, and Scarface wasn't too far off on how large the drug trade is there, even for a almost 30 year old film.)

Mind you, the correct phrasing there is documented gang members. There are tons of new initiates all the time, many whom haven't been arrested for gang related crimes yet, and illegal immigrants who belong to Mexican gangs migrating up here, like MS13. So the real number is far higher.

Though there are parts of the Bronx that you might just have to be a little crazy to walk into, you may be surprised to find that Manhattan is quite a bit more crime ridden than the Bronx. Check the statistics via Google.

Note that I'm talking crime in general, not specifically violent crime. The Bronx is nowhere near as violent as Bohan, not even close. As a born and raised New Yorker myself, I'd also have to say that NYC in general isn't exactly the warzone you guys seem to think it is. There are a LOT worse places in the US in terms of crime, and NYC has really been cleaned up since the 80's.

But maybe that's just cause I'm jaded and used to it all. As a tourist, I wouldn't want to venture too far from the tour bus either.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, however that's the closest you can get. With documented gang members, since it's almost impossible to document all gang members. It's sad that things have to be that way, and I believe that most gang members become gang members to get a family. A lot of the gang members come from hard working lower class families who barely have time to spend with their family. It's sad and something has to be done about it, how? Don't ask me.

Yeah, tell me about it. In siesta key they always talked about Miami and what not. Remember when I told them I liked Miami (South Beach) they laughed and talked about drugs. I know it's a lot of drug smuggling going on there, especially with cocaine and it's bad. Still enjoy South Beach, eventhough rest of Florida E.G. Siesta Key, Ft Lauderdale & Ft Myers is better :P
