Discussion: Microsoft effectively hands the sales market to Sony

Featured Replies

Well, its happened. Microsoft have essentially killed off the last amount of interest from any true gamers and fully dived into the casual gamers and socialite lifestyle.

Yesterday (or earlier today for you americans), Xbox Rep "Major Nelson (Larry Hybb) posted on his blog of what the Xbox ONE will feature which has caused a massive backlash from gamers around the world, myself included.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

I don't think I need to explain why thats absolute bullshit. What if you wanna take your console to a place where you won't have an internet connection? When asked about this controversial move, microsoft said "You can always use mobile broadband" which means YOU need to pay even more money to an ISP to play the games you bought.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? Have Microsoft essentially handed us the gun and put an apple on their head? Will you be sticking to PC and/or getting a PS4?

This is either the dumbest move entirely by Microsoft, by simply doing EVERYTHING the community absolutely stated NOT to do (The not being able to borrow used games rightfully annoys me).

That, or the smartest Marketing strategy ever. I can see it now: Microsoft: "Look, we know we messed up. We took a turn in the wrong direction without listening to our fan base, but now, we're listening, and we're going to give everything anyone has ever been looking for in the next Console Generation (Cue huge amounts of praise by everyone).". This honestly wouldn't surprise me, what in all with the massive amounts of publicity they're getting right now. (Which I can can say rightfully so, with it being a large topic on Reddit, the news, and even a topic here now, provided by Harper.). Although Microsoft has been pretty...well...not "User Friendly" in the past, I don't think they're this dumb to goof up this massively.

Not sure if Microsoft is actually even that smart though, their marketing company might be however.

It really isn't smart of them, especially taking into consideration the major news about the massive blanket surveillance on US citizens by the intelligence agencies, the Xbox One is effectively not a viable option for many people now.

It will be very interesting to see if Sony will learn from this, they have stayed pretty quiet since their conference regarding the PS4, giving them time to analyse the markets response to both their product and the Xbox One.

Not only, FBI and NSA have massive surveillance on non-US citizens too, through Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Skype, YouTube, etc...

I have a complete article about that, but it's in French. EDIT : article in english : http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/06/us-tech-giants-nsa-data

I've always been a Playstation man as i grew up playing on my old Playstation 1. I've never owned a XBOX in my life so I can't judge their gaming platform. Having said that, it would surprise me as well if Microsoft took such a huge gamble (risking the loss of a large amount of gamers) without being confident that Sony will make a similar move with the Playstation 4. If this does turn out to be the case and Microsoft took these decisions completely on its own, Sony will no doubt have a great advantage of which it could benefit greatly. In my opinion, Microsoft has made a PR and marketing blunder with different people saying different things about the XBOX One. Let's hope Sony stays calm and keeps the focus on gaming instead of creating a family entertainment system.

"Dura lex, sed lex"

I think that I will wait until it they get closer to shipping and try to get a complete picture before I judge. It's funny when people say "speak with your wallet" or some other nonsense, as some cases they are usually the first ones to buy the item in question. In a situation like this people will say "don't by this" or "i'm not getting that" then the sales are off the charts in the first week. Imagine if we all followed through with our promises.

That said, I am hoping JAM-Justin is correct with his reverse psychology marketing or at least that Sony learns from the mistakes of others. Maybe they are testing the waters with this. Problem being, when waters get tested there is typically a bar-raising precedent to follow (can you say free to play?) and it's usually in favor of making the company coffers larger.

Everything has it's upsides and downsides, question is how much you (we???) are willing to put up with.

VIVA LA PC!!!

One console down, one more to go, then the desktop can reclaim it's rightful place on the throne. Then we will never have to see another abomination of a port to PC game again.

You are using the WRONG right theme!

Let me just say that my cousin works for the NSA and he has spied on other countries.

It's an open secret, everybody knows that, we were just missing concrete proofs.

But as usual, it will be a "oh we are sorry, there's nothing to see here, see you soon !" and people will go back to bed (and to facebook).

PS : I'm not a conspirationist or a crazy guy with a big "Jesus Saves" sign on me while naked on the streets.

EDIT : sorry to be off-topic, at first I just wanted to precise that NSA doesn't watch US only, but the entire planet.

and this is why I'm contemplating more and more about not buying a new console and sticking with my PS3. After looking at the initial hardware specs of both systems they are evenly matched in all departments, the only real difference is X1 uses DDR3 RAM compared to the DDR5 ram in the PS4, only difference will be speed, but in the X1 where it's running 3 OS's at once I am sure the speed will hurt them.

As for the PS4, I'm looking forward to the reveal on the 10th, though from early looks I'm not too keen on the DualShock 4 controllers.

This online all the time is a big deal, but remember Sony has yet to confirm or deny that their system could also stop your from playing pre-owned games, maybe after seeing everyone frustrated at X1's limits they will change their mind and use it as a finishing move on Microsoft's new console.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360.

Would it be wrong of me to say, I told you so? :D
