Steam Gta or CD copy?

Featured Replies

I went to my local gamestop today and they did not have a copy of GTA IV and the guy told me to just get it on steam. Should i follow is advice and just get it from Steam even though im gonna mod it for LCPDFR? or would a retail copy be better even though i am gonna have to hunt for a copy?

  • This is true because Steam will have to re-download the game in order to re-install it.  Just make a backup of the entire original directory, so that if you have a problem you would be able to copy it

I prefer the cd but thats just me plus my internet is slow diden't want to download a large file.

I use the steam version, and it works great for modding. Plus, it automatically updates to the latest patch. The only thing different is the install directory, which the LCPDFR installer automatically detects.

I would go with the steam version. Also, with steam you don't have to worry about losing a product key or a situation like that, like you would have with a retail/cd version (problem I ran into awhile back). Good luck!

It may be more convenient for you, but if you're going to be modding chances are you're going to mess up, and going to need to re-install. It takes SO much more time to un-install and re-install the game with Steam than it does with a disk.

Well, granted you have to re-download the whole game again, but i've never run into an issue where replacing files from my backup wouldn't fix things. I believe you can also repair the game installation through steam, which (I think) replaces the modified files with originals, so you don't need to re-download.

Either you're not sure what you're talking about, or I've been doing it wrong this whole time.

Well, I just looked it up, and you can repair the game installation, which replaces all modified files with default ones. However, the catch is that steam only repairs the files that came with the original installation, and does not see other files. What this means is that steam will ignore extra files like .asi mods, .asi loaders, and any file that was not installed originally with the game. To access the tool, right click on GTA IV, then click on the local files tab, then press the "verify integrity of game cache" button. It will then proceed to scan all the original files and replace the modified ones. :)

Thank you so much! :)

EDIT: I'm not sure where you are looking at this from. Would this be in my Steam library, or a desktop shortcut? I looked and can't find it.

Where the hell did you hear that?

I've had the retail copy for years and I can install modifications perfectly fine to it.
