I really like the look of the game, and I'm a big Sim City fan, but simply the fact that I'd have to make an Origin account and then be permanently connected to the internet is enough to stop me from buying the game.  I understand that they're concerned about piracy, but release it on Steam and I'll buy it - its that simple.  Release it as a boxed copy without requiring an Origin account and permanent connection and I'd probably buy it too.

I want to play SimCity, not SimCity the MMO with Origin :(

I had high hopes for it, I really thought it looked good, then I saw a video of the tutorial.

It looks far too restrictive, more like a first world Tropico game.

I know all the simulation and complexity is there, it just looks.... Not Sim city'ish.

I'd love to see a multiplayer Sim City, the idea itself is amazing, work together with friends to create a magnificent region, but they have executed it the wrong way, it's such a shame, as Sam said, Origin-only combined with the always online and my initial impressions are enough, not even mentioning the £45 price tag, with day one DLC in form of new city styles.

I love the Sim City series, but it seems that "evil EA" has once again done wrong, I guess that's what happens when you hire a business oriented person to run a gaming company, they sacrifice too much for the sake of more money.

It's hard for me to listen to an opinion based on a beta/tutorial video, however I do understand your point.

Here's my take:

EA has a new thing going for themselves, instead of both appeasing to the older player base and the new one by making a game like the previous one but improving on that fact, they are now pretty much throwing out all old sequels out the window and starting fresh to go with the "New" generation. Many of the older players don't like it but people like me who have not played Sim City yet are dying to get our hands on it, this is the same case with games like BF3, or The Sims3. I'm a avid old player of both of those other older game sequels and they to me seem like they just completely ruined it. EA won't change how they do things, nothing anyone says will change that, the profit is too large. I'm sure it's still gonna be a great game though.

@Sam, agreed, however if I want a game bad enough, something that small (It's small to me, annoying yes, but small) isn't gonna keep me away from a game I want :D.

This tweet is enough for me to say nope.avi;

The #SimCity Beta is taking place Jan 25-28. Be the first to play a one hour slice of the game: http://bit.ly/WaQ6XQ  RT if you're excited!

https://twitter.com/simcity/status/292255236167454720

The "beta" is basically a one hour demo of the game, granted they allow you play the one hour over and over again, but it's a demo.

Really sad because it looks like a great sequel to SC4 :(

Call me stuck-up or whatever, but I like the idea of having the cities and stuff stored on my PC, not EA's servers, and I like the idea of buying the game, not the game plus mandatory Origin installation, registration and activation (and them I'm assuming that I have to be running Origin while playing the game, while being connected to the internet, and god forbid what would happen if my internet connection or the server dropped).  It stinks really, especially given the PR spin they've put on it with things like "this is a cloud computing powered game and it needs our servers to do the work because your PC can't handle it" - http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/article/The-Benefits-of-Live-Service

I know my i5 3570k at 4.2 GHz is a little bit old, but I think it would blow your server with "100,000" other SimCity instances and processes on it out of the park.

I had peaked interest into this game when I first heard of it, then I heard of what EA did to it and I decided my money would have much more value spent on something worthwhile.

Sadly, it isn't the first time greedy EA have ruined a potentially great game, I'll take a more recent example;

Need for Speed Most Wanted (2012)

Let me start off by saying that Criterion is one of the best British video game companies around today, they gave us the moderately good Burnout series and finished it off with the epic Burnout: Paradise which I've clocked well over 800+ hours on since its release.

Need for Speed is a brilliant game, most people are calling it a Burnout Paradise 2 which indeed can be proven true to certain points due to some dynamics, one of them being the driving engine, no loading screens online and the shutting down of rival cars to add them to your garage.

What really took this game down for me was what EA did, on the DISC is this little beauty:

Thing is, EA decided:

"Hey guys, how about if we take this car and lock it so that players will have to buy a Slim Jim to get a code to unlock it"

"But aren't Slim Jims only available in America? What about the fans in Europe?"

"Fuck them. Who gives a shit, restrict this car to American owners only, who cares if they paid £40 for the game"

And yes, they actually did that.

Unfortunaly with Origin you do need to be connected to their server to play, I recently found a bargin in EB games, all 17 Command and Conquer games plus a 20 song soundtrack cd, and early access to the next game for only $50, the catch is they are all digital downloads via Origin, and I installed it on my gf's laptop and when we did not have internet I could not play it because you need to be connected to Origin to play.

I must confess and admit that I did pre-order it; although I know it will be raped in the arse by Origin and DLC releases every 2 femtoseconds. Nevertheless I enjoyed SC4 alot and I want to give the new Sim City a try. We'll see how it works out.

I've been playing SimCity since SC2000 and SimTown, and this new one looks more like SimTown 2 than a SimCity game. I'd say SimCity 4 is the best there is and probably will ever be, and SimCity 3000 coming in at a close second. Man, I have a lot of fond memories of playing that old SC3000 on my Windows 98. Good times.

From the graphics alone(note the disappearance of "not final graphics" in videos) I think this is another case of the previous attempt at SimCity 5, just not as bad. SimCity 4 was the most successful one in the series, and it will probably remain that way knowing €A's track record.

SC4 may have old, trimetric orthographic, graphics and many restrictions on what it can do, but it has hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of -->FREE<--(directed at £A) and outstanding mods.

One of the many things that makes me think civilisation should be wiped out and re-started, second to me and ~6bln others being "suspicious" for not having Fuckbook accounts:

Indeed, SC4 was the game that introduced me to modding (also, it set my expectations for strategy guides WAY too high - SC4 guides had tons of data tables that were INCREDIBLY useful). Also, this thread reminds me that I haven't played it in a while. I'll be back ... in like 6 days.

So I got access to closed beta...

The Glassbox Engine runs really smoothly on my fairly old PC, so don't worry about lag. As mentioned by the developers, it really is a breathing dynamic city. For instance, you see people lining in front of the casino, and you actually see police officers apprehending criminals. Analytic information like land value and so forth have greatly improved too. It's now way easier to manage your city. As final comment, the curved roads are awesome.

I would post screenshots if I could, but the beta EULA doesn't allow that. Sorry.

I got the Beta. It's still a bit buggy, but the gameplay is fast, gripping and very rewarding (almost a bit too much). I actually was sad when the beta hour terminated for me, I wanted to keep playing - which for me is an indicator that I'm enjoying the game. It seems like this is one of the games EA didn't cock up massively.
