Just moved to North Carolina...suggestions?!?

Featured Replies

I haven't told anyone yet this but I just moved here in North Carolina from Illinois in January. Prior to that, I've never really been to NC and lived in Illinois for the rest of my life :woot:(20 years) before moving here...(I just turned 21 btw)

Any suggestions in living here in the South!?! I'm still pretty culture shocked especially the new college I'm in.

I would love for you guys to share some of your similar stories for those of you who moved into a place that never came across before :P

Your chances of getting shot have decreased by 500%. Congrats.

You know, like the rest of the world.

  • It's actually more than doubled. 20.2% of people in Illinois are registered gun owners. North Carolina is 41.3%. He lives in the south. That's gun country.   Good luck out there.

I live in Alberta Canada the great white north and it's cold

Have fun in the south best of luck

NC will most likely secede from the rest if the USA for that ridiculous religious freedom thingy that just went into law. Have fun learning how to use the metric system, and learning

a new national anthem.

God...thats so true. I'm still getting used to the southern people not to mention their accent and there is a lot of religion I have seen in my college compared to back in Illinois

I may not live in the south, but I may as well. I would just say don't befriend the gun owners (I know that's pretty much everyone). If someone brags about their AR-15 and Spas-12 just walk away. I may live in NY, but the red-necks are just as bad.

And Illinois is crime country. Ownership doesn't mean anything when comparing to the crime rates.

Don't talk about Religion or Politics, to someone you just met, it's a bit sensitive here.

It's a nice state, people have guns but they don't use em,

Oh ye, our state now discriminates people : *cough* *cough* House Bill #2

Also to mention do not become a teacher or educational staff, they don't get paid anything around here.

I heard the NCSHP is hiring :)

But otherwise, just sort of, eh... It's okay down here in the south if you love every road being a highway

The highways is definitely is a thrill! Alot of sights and there are TREES everywhere you go! That was something that I least expected.

Another problem, I found out that the "sprinkled yellow honeycake" on my car is tree pollen :woot: Very surprisingly I have bad seasonal allergies but its been four months and it hasn't affected me yet strangely.....

The murder rate is near identical. North Carolina is 5.1 per 10,000 people, Illinois is 5.3.

And ownership certainly does mean something when you have a higher chance of pissing off the wrong person, and 4/10 people in your state are armed. Broadly speaking though, this is an American problem, not just a specific state problem, as across the US; 1 in 3 people own a gun. Those are not good odds when you combine them with human emotions like anger, or substances that alter your mental status like alcohol, drugs, etc.

Religion and politics are two of the three "protected topics" in social conversation, generally speaking, so I'd advise that no matter what state you live in. But yes, the south is the bible belt, more churches, more right wing beliefs, etc. I'd like to refer to my figure I gave Lundy up above, though. The murder rate is the same as Illinois, so the violence is about the same, sorry to say.

Just make good choices in life, stay away from trouble, avoid confrontations, hangout with the right people, avoid arguments, keep life simple, 99.999% chance that you'll live.

I carry my Taser C2 on me, all the time in a span of two years now needless to say I've never had to use it or placed it at the ready position. Considering that I wasted money on the new Taser Bolt. I just hope I never have to use it.

I don't discuss politics or make such statements due to the fact I'm not willing to put up with it let alone an empty achievement. The students in my new college class I'm currently enrolled in is so HEATED on various topics of politics, I literally just enjoy being part of the audience and to listen to my classmates firing at each back and forth. Remember, this is just a very basic and achievable course that I'm taking. One of the students in my class that made the loudest noise DROPPED the course, presumably out of anger due to the fact no one politically agreed with him

You should have moved to Wisconsin, it was a lot closer and has many trees too.

It's a nice vacation spot since I been to the dells several times. In terms of living there, in my opinion, I wouldn't. I didn't have a choice and had to move due to mandatory family reasons. Neither I am not willing to put up with the winter cold I dealt with for 20 years of my life that gets my knuckles and bones cracking.

I'd recommend California ;D I was just there for vacation three weeks ago and the weather is phenomenal. Too bad typical housing in Cali is well over a million.

-The truth is, the people here have been wonderful and very warm. There is a meaning called "Southern Hospitality" here.

Life isn't always that easy. People are often hurt by the ones the love and trust the most, not necessarily by random strangers.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/fla-man-attacks-wife-kills-young-children-article-1.2605175

A father of two young kids was having dinner at a Chili's restaurant in Florida with his ex-wife. There was an argument, he left, hid in the trunk of their car, and then stabbed the mother when she came outside, then ran her over. Then went home, picked up his two kids, shot them to death, went on a police chase, then shot himself dead. Despite past marital troubles, this was a man the family should have been able to trust. And he ended up being a murderer.

But random encounters that turn lethal do happen for no apparent reason too. This incident was fuel for the fire of presidential candidate Donald Trump's claims about Hispanics being criminals and rapists (not my words, his, go fact check if you want, he's said some pretty horrible stuff):

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/christinerousselle/2015/07/06/illegal-immigrant-kills-woman-in-san-francisco-chose-city-for-sanctuary-policies-n2021735

This man who has been deported before attacked a young girl who was walking with her father on a boardwalk in San Francisco, supposedly a relatively nice city in California. There was absolutely no motive to this. No robbery occurred, he did not know her or the father. He walked up and shot her to death, then ran, and to the best of my recollection he hid the gun, then sat down outside a restaurant at a table as if nothing happened. Police just walked right up to him and placed him under arrest. He may have been under the influence of drugs, as he insinuated, but that doesn't excuse what he did, or dismiss the fact that there is now a father without his child.

All of this grim business I mentioned above is meant to underscore that you cannot prepare for everything, and minding your own business and being a good citizen sometimes isn't enough for people to leave you alone. Hell, sometimes not acknowledging a person who is being hostile to you can set them off. No matter who you are, or where you are; stay alert, be aware of your surroundings, and expect the unexpected. Humans are arguably the worst species on this planet. They're tolerable to be around at their best, and they're stupid, irritable, unpredictable, and sometimes downright insane at their worst. History proves that.

That's very true. But yeah I agree and I'll also admit that sometimes I have to be on guard. In this society there will be stupidity that will exist regardless of any type of environment.

I was actually in San Francisco for a vacation three weeks ago and I wouldn't honestly be surprised if some horrible random thing happened. In fact, there was an incident on the bus I was taking from Chinatown to Pier 39 when a random homeless guy got out of nowhere, stopped the bus, and demanded the bus to give him a ride. He got ANGRY once the bus driver declined that he entered the bus and started pounding on the bus door. It was scary but luckily the homeless guy moved on and the bus just drove off and nothing further happened.

There is really no exact percentage of a chance that danger will approach you, regarding what you stated above that we can't prepare for everything even though 99.999% of the time we come home safe but that number of percentage can change randomly. Some people rare or never dealt with dangerous or physical confrontations and some others have dealt with it multiple times.

I greatly appreciate the eye opener on your sources ^^^ since I myself are keen to such stories :woot:

Sure thing. I don't want to necessarily depress people or make anyone live in constant fear. But you'd be surprised what kind of people walk the same streets we do. Somebody today who was either under the influence or had a serious mental problem started being belligerent with me while I was speaking with another person entirely. I didn't feel scared, but I definitely saw that things were about to flame up just based on his body language and tone, even though I tried to deescalate the situation by talking to him before getting physical or asking for help from a bystander. I had never seen the man before in my life.
