Buying GTA V on Steam: Is it worth it?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I am going to buy GTA V when it comes out on PC, but I was wondering if I should buy it from Steam or a much cheaper physical copy.

For me, the main benefits of buying it from Steam are:

-Access to Steam Workshop

-Easier to reinstall

I plan to mod it with LSPDFR (hopefully), cop cars, tow truck script etc. and basically get it to how you would play LCPDFR on GTA IV, however I don't know if Steam Workshop would be necessary, as I'm not sure whether all the mods I would want, such as vehicles, would be more likely to be on Steam Workshop or GTA modding websites. Also, when I encountered problems playing LCPDFR on GTA IV, I was told several times that some things wouldn't have happened had I bought it via Steam rather than a physical copy.

What are your thoughts on this?

There's no real difference between DVD and digital download, so those saying it wouldn't happen on a Steam/DVD copy are wrong. It's up to personal preference, although it's a lot more convenient to own it on Steam, rather to insert 7 DVDs. You'll also always have the latest updates.

My current computer has a DVD drive, my next one won't most likely. DVDs are starting to be severely outdated. Why not ship the game on some USB device instead? That'd be a lot more awesome.

So.. I won't have to register my physical copy on Steam? ... I'm fucked.

Pre-ordered it on Amazon, I was thinking that I have to put this key into Steam.. <.<

No, once you get the physical copy, you do NOT get the key to get to steam, it is only a disk to install to your PC.

Phuck. So basically, I'll have to add people to GFWL instead of Steam to play with them? C'mon, a Steam key would be much more comfortable. :c

GFWL is dead since a while bro. GTA V is working through the Rockstar Games Social Club. If you bought a hard copy (like me on Amazon), you'll have to link the game to your RGSC account.

Wait. Since it requires an activation key to activate, can't you use that key to add to steam?

Cause I remember you could do that with IV

On Amazon it clearly says the key is for Rockstar Games Social Club, no mention of Steam.

On steam it would be better because its all one download and for some people its quicker. The started PRELOADS yesterday and mine download in 1hr.

I think it will be like a really long time till "LSPDFR" gets released, if it even does get released. Im more excited for the game itself, rather than some silly police stuff, I just cant wait for vehicle mods, amazing graphics, etc.

Thanks for your opinions guys! However, no one has really answered whether or not Steam Workshop is likely to be the exclusive location of some mods suitable for LSPDFR and therefore would be missed out on if the game was not purchased on Steam. Thoughts anyone?

This is a difficult question, I'll try and make it simple for you:

Hard copy:
+ Got a relic to put on your shelf of games (I enjoy seeing a wall of games rather than a list on steam)
+ If you lose the internet or lose your digital account or whatever, you can easily reinstall as you have the disk
+ Paper copy of the map to put on your wall because why the fuck not
+ New disk smell
+ the joy of ripping open the stupid security sticker and hearing that oh so satisfying "click" of the case opening, as you launch plastic wrapping everywhere

- Disk can be scratched = fucked
- Disk/serial can be lost = fucked
- Reinstalling takes FOREVER

Steam/Digital copy:
+ Always got it if you move PC
+ Can easily unfuck the game (steam verify cache etc)
+ No disks or shit to mess around with
+ Linked to your account so you can install it elsewhere
+ Steam overlay...let's be honest it's quite handy at times (*other brands may not be as handy, see your own personal opinion on digital games launchers for more details)

- Install the game? Nope gotta wait 13,124 hours to download the game, only to find out when it hits 99% that the download failed due to a really slight interruption in your internet. Have to repeat
- No sense of joy when you own the game, just pure frustration waiting for the download, then the install, then the client to say "oops no, 100 patches first lol"
- Lose all sense of excitement when you go to the shop/it gets delivered in the post because your already bored waiting for it to download.
- No refunds or ability to sell it on

Hope this helps :)

Definitely would recommend steam. If you break your game modding it you can just verify game cache.Fresh game - no Re install.

I answered there:

y u no read

I would suggest you refer to the LukeD quote given above. It's nicely summarized there.

Now, personally? I would prefer a disk version. If you can take care of your CDs like a normal person, it's better imo.

Since I've got a slow internet (GTA:V preload takes ~7 days to download for me!) a disk version would be great for reinstalling. Even if your disk gets scratched, just download the base game from the internet, don't apply any crack, & enter your key & you're good to go.

But I gave in to the pre-order bonuses in Feb. (esp for the free GTA:SA [Damn you R* Warehouse, y u no give me Max Payne 3/LA Noire in my country D:  ] ) & pre-ordered it on Steam :P
