White boxes on LAPD cars?

Featured Replies

The ALPRs look sweet on the rear of the roof on my towns Explorers, I don't even like interceptor utilities that much.

I agree that ALPR's look good on the roof of the Interceptor Utilities, but you do realize that Explorers and Interceptor Utilities are practically the same car?

Looks like an oversized pimple when it's on the lightbar like that.

It's not about aesthetics, it's about practicality. Probably works better on the roof rather than the trunk.

It doesn't look bad at all in my opinion.

As a previous LAPD Cadet before moving to another department to become a CSO, Officers don't really care about how their cars look. They care more for functionality, not style. Does it drive? Yes? Then, let me get to work.

Conversation with a motor officer who was driving a LAPD CVPI with a rambar(yes, they exist) a couple years back.

Me: I really do like these arjents.
Him: What?
Me: The arjents, I think they make today's LAPD car.
Him: What's an arjent?
Me: The lights... on the roof.
Him: Son, that's called a lightbar.

They should keep going with their original design of the ALPR on the light bar...

Very aerodynamic, whilst yes it's true looks don't matter, at least consider the additional fuel burn of those boxes being in the airflow.

They probably end up spending the same amount on fuel as they would if they bought the better and more discrete ANPR cameras.

Some UK police cars have the same sort of thing.

But the majority are much better and placed in a better location:

I lol'd at all these comments. Who the hell cares it's ugly lmao. It's supposed to do its work, check plates. It's not a showcar...

My point was that its not aerodynamic or discrete. It probably does cause a lot of drag, the lightbars alone cause lots of drag but they're necessary and they streamline them as much as possible. The ANPR readers could be placed in a better location.

It's just a personal opinion about the look of the car, no one said it had to be the primary characteristic of a police car.

In that case, you should also say "I lol'd at all these comments" when people say a police car is beautiful and sexy. After all, "it's supposed to do its work, it's not a showcar", right.

Besides, I do believe that the look of the car does matter. Why? For the outside view people have on police. Why do officers wear full outfits with often ties, hats and all that? After all, ties and hats are not practical at all to do the work. But they still wear it. Why? Because it looks good, and people judge by the look. I'm sorry, but between two CVPIs, one with ALPRs on the lightbar and another on the trunk, the first one while make me laugh like hell while the other will bring more respect to me.

Imagine if a police officer suddenly pulled you over and came at your window with a beer cap. Same with this car, the two huge ugly ALPRs are the beer cans.

True, true. However the light bars aren't aerodynamic either. I don't know about America but in the Netherlands the FS Vista slows down the copcars 20KM/H. That's quite a lot. I don't know if these ANPR's influence that much compared to the lightbar.

The Netherlands quit using the tie because it wasn't practical enough. Also they thought it wasn't "tough looking" enough.

I think the tie has quite an authorised look. I had to wear a clip-tie for two years but it isn't practical indeed, so I understand they threw that out.

OT: These readers could also be placed in the grill. Way better and maybe better looking for you guys.

I've just changed my mind. LAPD lightbar is ugly as it is so those plate-readers make it look a bit better. At least they look unusual. If they work better this way it's a win-win.

I like the low profile ALPRs more.

-snip-

They may be lower profile, but they still scream 'I AM COP, SLOW DOWN.' I do have to agree though, it does look a lot better.

Knowing the LAPD, with their budget situation, this doesn't really surprise me. They save money any way possible, if it means buying some straps from walmart, and some out of date ALPRs from amazon, they'll do it.

They can't be put in the grill as it would get in the way and one has to be pointed at a 45 degree angle and the same for the other.

Now, some European light bars are a little too big. Certainly in Italy, the Polizia Stradale use quite thick light bars, as does the German police, but I know the Polizei streamlined theirs as much as possible. Here in the UK, my local force, Metropolitan Police use very thin LED light bars. Message boards are usually placed on the light bars in european cars, in Italy "rallentare" or any custom message is displayed on the matrix on the light bar but in England they use a board set on the back window (if they use it at all). So american and English light bars are similar due to their usage.

In France, units actually having a message board are very rare, but they are indeed inside the car:

As do I. Furthermore, I like ones that are placed on the boot/trunk.

Cheers.
