I don't have a clue as to what the situation on this subject is within other nations, but this is often times a highly debated topic in the United States. (Hence the parenthesis) Though I'm ignorant on the status of other nations, we can generalize this subject for all nations for the purpose of international diversity. To help calculate the results a bit easier, I've included a small poll.

(WebMD) -- In March 1998, an Oregon woman dying of breast cancer asked her physician to prescribe a drug that would allow her to end her life. The doctor agreed. Later in the month she took the medication. With that action, she became the first person in the United States to commit suicide with the help of a doctor -- legally.

This has come to be known as "physician-assisted suicide." A physician honors a patient's voluntary request for a lethal dose of medication, which the patient later administers to him -- or herself. It's legal only in the state of Oregon, and has been only since late 1997.

A few other states are making efforts to legalize assisted suicide. But soon Congress may put a stop to it everywhere.

People say suicide is selfish to the families of the people who attempt it. They say it's hurting them and upsetting them. But honestly, isn't it also selfish to make someone who despises their lives so much that they want to cut it short and force them to live? And for what? So you feel like a good person? Because you'll be sad? Well they're sad. Of course put them in therapy and such first. But if they decide they have to, please put yourself in their shoes. There must be a reason they're so miserable they want to die.

Personally, like most things, I believe the determination should be based on the circumstances. 

 

In a case of a diagnosed and medically proven illness that reasonable medical science cannot cure, then I don't see any problem with someone chosing to end their life before they endure pain and suffering beyond belief.

 

In a case of "my girlfriend / boyfriend broke up with me" or "I hate my parents, they ruin everything", or other such "life isn't worth living for" mentality, I think they should be stopped and treated and time will make them realize how idiotic that feeling is.

Legally speaking, suicide and assisted suicide is currently illegal in the US because the judicial system assumes that someone who has made the decision to end their own life is not mentally competent to be making such a decision. They courts basically have ruled that a suicidal person has a mental health issue that makes them incompetent and should be treated.

 

 

NO ones decision or anyones business really.

Yes, sometimes there are things that just cannot be dealt with and the person would rather end it. I would rather have someone die than for that person to snap and start killing others.

Yes, as long as it's for medical reasons like a terminal or incurable illness and what not. If would be f'd up to make someone's family watch them die over time, or force someone to live against their wishes. But no if it's mental or emotional problems, there are better ways to deal with that than to just end your life. Again, it's all depends on the circumstances.

I don't understand why people do this, the cancer's going to kill you anyways. Doesn't it just make it more sad that you would kill yourself?

I believe that for medical reasons, it is completely acceptable for someone to commit suicide. A few years back, we had a family friend who my brothers and I would call Aunt Lynda (bless her.) She was an amazing woman, very strong, very smart. She had also been dealing with cancer for many years and eventually got to the point where she could no longer walk since the cancer was in her thigh area. She was clearly in very much pain and had been for quite some time. One day she decided that she wanted to visit her son in Oregon for a few weeks. We did not know that she wouldn't return home, however. We believe that she went with assisted suicide to finally end her pain. We also believe that she knew she was going to die and only wanted to see her son before she left.

 

 

I say no. It's just a loose term for murder.

We had this debate in my Economics class today. I personally believe that if the person has a Terminal Disease that will kill them, i believe that they should have the option to. But that being said, only if there is no way to cure it. For example, terminal cancer. If they are bed bound and cannot move, 75 lbs soaking wet, or just has a Terminal Disease period, they should have that option.

I've had many people close to me who I've lost to cancer. The pain that you endure while undergoing treatment for it is almost unbearable. If you found that your case was terminal and could not be treated, would you want to put yourself through the pain for the same outcome?

It's at there own free will the one killing themself isn't killing anyone else. It's there choice honestly it would be sad to tell grandchildren that their grandmother/father killed themself, people just want to end their misery.

Physical pain or emotionally? Or both?

 

If I found out I had terminal cancer, I wouldn't want to kill myself.

I guess it really depends on the situation...but for the most part i'm gonna say no. Most people who comment suicide are people who either A = have mental issues (whatever they may be) or B = Get caught up in the heat of the moment. Suicide can be prevent if people just take time to cool off or relax or seek professional help.
