Should I avoid buying GTA IV on Steam because of GFWL?

Recommended Posts

I personally haven't had any bad experiences with GTA IV off Steam the only thing they ask for after installation is the CD key which you can find on steam and you can disable GFWL if you don't want it on.

Alright, I'll buy it and see what happens. Thank you.

once you get LCPDFR it comes with a file named xlive and that is what disables GFWL and if you want to go back online just replace that with the dsound file and no problem

The game performs perfectly well either in Steam or outside of it. I have both a disc version and a Steam version, there is no loss of performance (or any other bug) that I experience in either (other than the normal stuff).

Only real problem sometimes, is during some Steam Client Betas, you can not launch GTA4 through Steam.

You can either opt out of the Beta, or launch GTA4 from it's directory rather than Steam.

That's actually really interesting, does this affect any other games or is it just GTA IV?

That's a relief, one of the biggest reasons why I'm buying this is because of LCPDFR, so I probably won't even have to deal with GFWL for a minute.

Well, I mostly play games that were built around Steam, so those always work. The only game I play that wasn't built around Steam is GTA4, so I can't confirm nor deny this.

I do have to say, people do report problems about other games not starting (or crashing) when in the beta and it's usually fixed with in a day.

GTA 4 steam version works perfectly fine, exactly like the way GTA 4 retail version works. GFWL doesn't effect anything (that i have noticed).

I have owned and played both retail/disc and Steam version of GTA 4.. there is no difference other than Steam updates the game to 1.0.7.0 automatically.

I run the Steam version of GTA4, and the only issue I have is with GFWL - most of the time, I use the XLiveless ASI loader, which makes GFWL a moot point, anyway.

However, if you wish to play multiplayer you WILL need a GFWL/XBL account, a[n] RGSC account, and the CD key.

I run the retail version of GTA IV and it runs perfectly, my mate runs the steam version and it runs the same. You should be fine.

Love the Steam version.  If you pork your install to the point where backups don't help, Steam can 'fix' the integrity of the game and will replace files that are missing or damaged, and bang...back in business.  I didn't even have to reinstall LCPDFR...worked fine, but all other car mods, ped mods, ect were reset.

Also, you can remove the paul.dll file (I think that's what it's called) and you'll never see the GFWL login screen ever.

Good luck!

i hate keeping the disc in the drive

You can just use a No-CD "Patch" for GTA:IV (Google it).

I use it for all my IV versions & it doesn't create any conflicts or problems with any mod or with the game itself.

there is no difference between steam and the disc, if you ask me steam is easier, you won't have to worry about finding the latest patch updates with steam or anything like that and you won't need to worry about loosing a game disc or damaging it with steam.

That would be a crack, of sorts, right? I don't think R* released any official no-dvd patch.

Nope, they have never released a no-cd patch for any of their games. i don't think any developer has released a no-cd patch for their game. the closest thing to playing your game without the disc is running the game as a non-steam game via steam.. then it'll load without the disc.

Sort of.

It's not "official" (hence why I wrote Patch in "s, maybe should've wrote "crack" or smh similar), it was created by someone (not R*), so you could play IV without the CD.

I don't think it's a crack, since (didn't try, but I think) IV still checks if it's original or not   & asks for your CD key.
