Those photos are great, Ringo!

The LAPD van is hilariously cool in its own right; it was designed with sharp angles, no doubt.

You can't beat a Twinsonic, especially on a stacked-headlight Fury.

Those Dodge RamChargers were beasts, and to see it decked out in CHP livery/lighting is always good. The classic red/blue aerodynic is classic for a reason! That Camaro must've been pretty quick, and I love the red spotlight.

The light green LTD II is...interesting for lack of a better word. I love the LTD II, but the clear TwinSonic with blue flashers and red rotators makes for an odd combo for sure.

And that last photo...

I wish that the NYPD Museum wasn't damaged by Hurricane Sandy as they probably would've held more outdoor shows if that wasn't the case, but all I can do now is wish for a quick recovery and visit the temporary location.

That's a great shot though - all the bars and post-1973 RMPs are beautiful. The Volare with the Dual Comm isn't seen too often either.

That's too sad to hear about the NYPD museum. I didn't know about that. As for the picture, I'll make a great desktop wallpaper. The pic is almost 4000x2500 or something like that.

I agree; it's a damn shame, especially since I was ready to visit the Museum right before Sandy hit. On the plus side, their temporary location [at 45 Wall St] does house some of the exhibits, and the entrance fee goes toward rebuilding the primary museum. Their site has some great photos for that matter - http://www.nycpm.org/

Looks like my Skyrim and Euro Truck Simulator 2 backgrounds will have to be put aside for now. :D

Valiant Super Bee's of the Policía Federal de Caminos (Mexican Federal Police), sporty version of the Mexican assembled Dodge Dart/Plymouth Valiant. Unlike the American Super Bee, the Mexican one used the A platform instead of the B one. It's 300hp 318 V8 engine made it one of the fastest cars avaliable in the country back in the day.

Another copy paste from the site SSP Central about some mysterious FBI Buick Grand Nationals, it's worth the read!

I remember hearing a story (back at the end of the 1980's) about how the FBI had Buick Grand Nationals (GN). I had actually read about it in a magazine. The FBI GN has gone on to become an urban legend with no real proof to substantiate if the car ever actually existed.

According to stories told about the FBI Grand National, GM Racing Program Manager Ray Smith was part of Buick Special Products Engineering which was responsible for total development of all Buick Specialty Vehicles, including: Grand National Regal, the 1981 and 1983 Indy pace cars, the Buick Wildcat in 1986, and (80) special Turbo Regals for the FBI.

Around 1986/1987, they were contacted by the FBI who were tired of losing the bad guys in car chases. Buick reportedly took the speed chip out of the Grand National to allow it to run in excess of 140 MPH.

What makes the story interesting is that someone reportedly purchased one of these new FBI GN's from a dealership in Missouri. Buddy Mitchell was at Phil Beck Motors Inc in Troy Missouri and purchased a new 1987 Buick Grand National. This GN was a bitter different than most though and had a 145 MPH speedometer and a white pinstripe. The vehicle supposedly had a number (GN/132) on the decklid (trunk) in white vinyl suggesting that it was some sort of fleet vehicle. Buddy began making phone calls to see what he could find out about the car and was told that the FBI "may have" ordered some GN's from buick and didn't pick them all up. Those not purchased by the FBI found their way to dealers that then sold the cars.

fbi_gn-1.JPGfbi_gn-2.JPG

Supposedly a Buick dealer outside of Washington DC received (22) Grand Nationals that were leased to the FBI for a year. These GN's had a Buick Stage 1 chip that removed the electronic governor and allowed the cars to reach higher speeds. The dealerships employees took the cars to a lot in the D.C. metro area and dropped them off to eventually be picked up by the FBI

According to the book by Dennis Kirban titled "Kirban's Guide to 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals" it states on page 271 that it is hard to prove that some were built for government agencies since they were titled by major car rental companies back then so they couldn't be traced back to a government agency. On page 272 it states Roy Cavan who was a FBI agent recalls his division in Cleveland, Ohio taking delivery of two 1986 Regal T-types in June 1986. The one he was assigned was deep metallic blue with matching blue interior. What made it unusual was it had a column shifter, bench seats and crank windows. There was a shotgun rack mounted in the ceiling just behind the front seats. Mr, Cavan's understanding is that during 1986-1987 the FBI took delivery of approximately 80 Turbo Regals in various colors. His assigned Regal stayed in service until fall 1988 when it had about 125,000 miles on it. It was sold soon after at a GSA auction for under $3,000. On page 274 Mr. Kirban recollects seeing one of the ex-FBI Turbo-T's - this one was an 1987 painted dark brown metallic with tan cloth interior. In the headliner was some sort of special sewn-in compartment for concealing a weapon.

Buick T-Types:

The legend doesn't just specify the Buick Grand National. The FBI supposedly had Buick Regal T-Types also. A mechanic in Cedar Rapids Iowa claims to have a gold/tan 1986 Buick T-Type that was used by the FBI in San Francisco. The vehicle was damaged in a wreck while in pursuit across the Golden Gate bridge and was sold at auction. It was purchased by an FBI agent who took it to Iowa when he moved in the 1990's. The car was eventually sold to the Iowa mechanic in 2001. The car has no history prior to 1999. The car came with a bench seat, column shifter, and AM radio. It had cross-bracing that was been added behind the rear seat to stiffen the car.

FBI or DEA?:

These cars have been rumored to have been purchased by the DEA as well. Supposedly the DEA was using them to chase drug dealers between Miami and New York.

Buick Regal T-Types And The Connecticut State Police:

Fact - The Connecticut State Police (CSP) used 1987 Buick Regal T-types (turbo) and Brand Nationals to help catch "professional speeders". CSP was said to have leased (24) of these cars. The cars had a different chip so the top speed would not be limited to 124 mph.

police_buick_t-type.JPG

(Connecticut State Police Buick Regal T-Types. Look closely and you'll see lights in the corners of the rear windows)

These cars had the chrome package and a total of (4) options:

- Remote passenger side mirror

- Rear window defroster

- Tilt steering wheel

- Soft ray tinted glass

They also had radio delete and aluminum bumper supports.

Connecticut had some Grand Nationals as well as seen in the poster below. One was spotted patrolling I-91 in Enfield.

csp_gn_poster.PNG

Connecticut is said to have purchased GN's from dealers as far away as Ohio.

Then, some time later came out the next article.

THE FBI 1986 BUICK REGAL T-TYPE

wrecked_auctioned1-600x372.jpg

There was a story about a FBI Buick Regal T-Type in California that was involved in a crash on the Golden Gate Bridge, and then sold at auction. The car was allegedly purchased at auction by an FBI agent that was eventually transferred to Iowa, where the agent sold the car to a Cedar Rapids mechanic.

In February 2012, SSP Central was contacted by the owner of that car and given photos and information on it.

History:

This 1986 Buick Regal T-Type was (1) of (17) purchased by the FBI. The Regal was wrecked during a pursuit in California going across the Golden Gate Bridge. Since the vehicle was near the end of its service time, it was auctioned off in it’s wrecked state in 1992, and sold for $1,900. The car was bought by an FBI agent who was eventually transferred to Iowa. The agent began taking the car to ‘Jim’s Tune Up’ in Cedar Rapids and eventually sold the car to the owner, Jim Hamblin. The car eventually ended up in the ownership of David Willard, who restored the car.

Thanks to David Willard for sharing this piece of history!

Photos & Documentation:

In the photos that follow, you’ll see photos from when the car was auctioned, photos before and after its restoration, as well as documentation.

Less functional than a regular 4 door sedan, I'm guessing you'd have to dispatch a van as well to transport the suspect. Reminds me to LA Noire. The third one is a Ford, isn't it?

Not exactly the same lightbar but the Colorado State Patrol used (not sure if they still do) some weird ass high rise lightbars.

Would be fun to see one of these drive under a low bridge...

Yeah, don't feel alone on your state having some weird "reach for the sky" high rise light bars! Mine did as well too!

But not as outrageous as the one above. Holy cow that thing is ridiculous. lol.

Heres a couple of pictures of my states older classic state vehicles.

"The only advantage of exercising every day...Is that you die healthier!"

If I had an extra $22k....I'd definitely buy this. Even if it is a replica. The August/September issue of Hemmings has an article of this exact car.

What is its purpose? is the lightbar supposed to raise or something?

The old Louisiana State Police paintjob, with the red hood and trunk was pretty nice. In the James Bond movie Live and Let Die, the LASP was featured, using Chevy Bel Airs which I guess were movie made (if you watch the movie you may notice that most of the cars used are 1973 Chevys...).

During this clip of the movie there can be seen as well some New Orleans Police Departament Ford Customs, with the former blue and white paint job.

@Ringo, are you suscribed to Hemmings Classic Car magazine?

Yeah. I sub to Hemmings Classic Car magazine. It's really neat.

Everytime I see one of those old Louisiana SP cars, I always think of Sheriff JW Pepper! Also, so many Twinsonics! :D

I actually like how in the background, one of the New Orleans cars has "traffic" on the rear door. Whether that's realistic or not, I don't know, but it's a nice touch.

Does anyone know what the blue and white car is with the blue/red Twinsonic is? It just has a badge on it's door. It looks like there is two of them.

The one at 0:17? Seems like a 1960's Custom 500.

About the New Orleans PD Fords, I'm sure they could perfectly be authentic patrol cars.

I was considering subscribing to Hemmings Classic Car now my subscrition to some muscle car magazine I was subscribed to is about to end but, is it me or most of the stuff featured is from before the 1960's? I've seen also some stuff from the 1970's or 1980's which interests me more, but to a lesser extent.

It's still tempting as the digital version is quite cheap, though.

Your Black Panthers post reminded me of a place they'll be soon familiar with - a prison. So I decided to make a post about prisoner transport. Hope this still fits the topic theme :)

Is remastered or something?

I think it is safe to assume so; if they took the 1972 theatrical release and just threw it on a blu ray it probably wouldn't look very good.

The DVDs were extremely difficult to find before this re-release though; new copies on Amazon were going for upwards of $80, with used ones starting at about $40.
