...are people really ignorant?

Just a little preliminary question for you, a hypothetical situation, if you will...

You're going to WalMart, and see a 30,000 lb armored truck by the door, the messenger has the door open which has a big yellow sign that says "STAY BACK," and he's loading boxed coin onto a hand cart.

Do you;

A) Heed the sign's warning, and stay back, and go around the truck

OR

B) Walk up to the messenger with your hands in your pockets, and attempt to walk between the truck and the building

Think about that for a brief moment.

Okay, so on several occasions today, I had people get WAY too close to me. The first one had his eyes on me, and with his hands in his pocket, walked towards me. I dropped what I was doing, stared him down, and put my hand on my gun and waited for him to pass.

The second more notable situation was at another WalMart, we were parked about 6 feet from the wall. With my side door open, that left about 3 feet between my door and the wall. I was loading coin again, and a guy walked up from the front of the truck, and I knew he was going to try and get between me and the wall. I pointed at him and yelled at him to go around, which he did. During that same stop, right after him, another guy came up from the back. At least with him, as soon as I looked at him, he stepped back, and went around.

On top of that, I had several people walk into me while inside. Like they're just drifting over, and bump me. I had to push several people today.

What the hell is wrong with people? Today was one of the worst days I've had in a while dealing with people. Just wanted to vent a little of my rage.

People have too many opinions about things they know nothing about, and the less they know, the more opinions they have.

People don't always pay attention to where they're going and who's in their way; I don't think they bumped you because they decided not to care, but because they didn't even notice you. If you then pushed them away, they probably left thinking you were being a jerk (not saying it's unreasonable to want to keep people away from you when you're carrying a large sum of money and have an openly carried gun that someone might try to steal; I'm saying that people just don't care about who you are or what your needs are).

I don't know about others, but I certainly wouldn't have known that it's a big deal getting between an armored truck guard and the wall. You have experience as a guard and know the proper etiquette, but most people don't. Rather, the default assumption is that 3 feet is a decent amount of space, and that there's no particular reason not to walk through that gap. If you yell at someone for doing so, they might just be confused at why there's an issue. Things that you have reason to be concerned about are normally perfectly acceptable behaviors (walking with hands in pockets isn't unusual; nor is looking at the person doing something mildly interesting; nor is walking between a gap between a person and the wall.

Signs saying "stay back" might well mean "don't come right behind me in a car, because I need room to move around", not "don't come near me because it's a security risk". That's if someone even read the sign; people tend not to do that.

You make some valid points. I appreciate your input.

As far as I'm concerned, my primary goal is to go home safely each day. If someone else goes home thinking I'm a jerk, so be it, I don't trouble myself with others' opinions. There are people who would not hesitate to kill me over what's in my bag, and as such, I have to treat everyone as a threat. I do not respond to people when they talk to me, unless it's a legitimate question. My goal is to get out of the truck, into the customers office, and back out again as quickly as possible. I've learned that requesting right of way (saying "excuse me") does not work 90% of the time. I have found that demanding right of way ("MOVE!" or "COMING THROUGH" or "WATCH OUT!) works much better. I have to be forceful and commanding, or people don't respond. I usually just end up moving people or their carts manually.

To respond to your comment about not knowing it's a big deal to get close to my door when it's open, understand that there is probably A LOT more cash on board than you realize, and when the door is open, we're vulnerable. When the door is closed, not a huge deal, I'll wait for you to pass, then hop out, or get in, whatever it may be. When it's open, if you get within about 20 feet, I'm going to promptly inform you that you need to back up.

My life is more important than anyone's convenience. I just wish more people would keep their distance. Putting me on edge is not a smart move.

We actually had a guy a while ago walk up to one of our messengers with his hand in his pocket, holding his child in the other. He walked up, pointed his hand that was in his pocket like he had a gun, and told him to give him all the money. Our guy immediately drew on him, and he pulled his hand out, saying it was only a joke, and that he didn't have to get upset.

You have to admit that that was ridiculously stupid. He risked his life, and the life of his kid, for a pathetic joke. I'm glad he was able to surrender before being shot.

Sounds like you're earning your pay. And there's plenty of stuff wrong with people. Ignorance due to poor education, bad parenting affecting their sense of right and wrong, etc.

Some people really are jerks and try to get on others nerves, others don't know what to do or just don't seem to process what is happening (I've noticed more people can't seem to "understand" what is hapening). I feel for you bud, last thing you want to have happen is for you or one of your crew to get hurt.

Obviously, it must be a requirement to park up right next to the store, but you can't move up a little? Then you'll have no problems with ignorant people like them.

Interesting story.  I've always wondered how serious armored truck guards take their jobs.  I often see security dropping off/picking up bags of cash from the bank, just leisurely walking all the way back to the armored car with the bags in hand.   Seems so casual, that I could just run up, grab the bags, run, and get away.

To the point; I've learned a long time ago not to assume anything when it comes to the general public.  Assume NOTHING with the masses of the asses.  People in general are so self-consumed and self-centered that they don't pay attention to anything past the tip of their noses.  Just drive down the street and you see it.

Doing security, or even entry control people you deal with and see daily are idiots. I've had several people attempt to refuse searches while attempting to enter a DOD facility, where it is posted everywhere, "All persons and Vehicles are Subject to Search". Best thing to do is to take a deep breath and realize that the general public will never know what you are doing or why, and that they have the IQ of a potato. But like other people have said on here, Stay Safe, and NEVER get complaisant.

I probably would've shot him!

Your job is already hard enough risking your life to protect money, tons of it.

Same here. I was wondering that same question.

We don't park directly in front of the door, we park just to the side, so that I have the most direct route in and out, while not blocking the door. The way my driver was parked in the stories I posted actually made it easier to go around than to go on the danger side.

Unfortunately, a lot of guys don't take it seriously enough. Those are the ones that end up getting jumped and shot. They don't realize that people are actually watching them. You noticed. Criminals notice, too, and they rob the ones like you mentioned.

Brinks drivers or Armoured Car drivers in general don't make that much, which is sad really, some that I know of hold 2 jobs to make ends meet ( no offence to the MoneyMan).

People really are that ignorant, and pretty dumb nowadays but that may be an understatement, there has been at least 1 pedestrian/vehicle collision at least once a day for the last 6 months here in Halifax , people driving 135-140 in a 110KM/HR speed zone, going around school buses with the lights flashing, don't move over for emergency personnel etc, seems that drivers are severely uneducated with the rules of the road, I was loading a car on the side of the road today and people would not slow down or move over, whizzing inches from my ass.

Not to contradict with your statement, but it is just common etiquette to move over for EVs, not law (at least here in 'Murica). As for school buses, I get what you mean.

It's not that drivers are uneducated, they just aren't disciplined - which is not their fault, nor the LEOs'. The problem is, there are only so many cops to 100 cars in a radius on a highway. Therefore, cops can't keep up with all the crap drivers to discipline them.

You have to move / pull over for emergeny vehicels in NC, if a cop, fire truck, ambulance, etc. is pulled over or is responding code you have to move over. Now you have to move over or slow down for tow trucks on the side of the road. (too many troopers and tow truck drivers have been hit or killed)
