MODERATOR NOTICE

This topic is about the petition, and about the NSA spying revelations. Please stay on that topic. Thanks.

On topic:

Given that the NSA is legally prohibited from looking at the info about citizens (in fact, even they had a policy where an analyst who found info they weren't legally allowed to collect had to delete it), I can't see how it made anything safer. It is ABSOLUTELY a human rights issue; human rights include privacy.

That said: Comparing this to the Soviet Union is fairly ridiculous. A true Soviet-style police state is orders of magnitude different than anything seen in the US. Among other things, spying there was routine, intentional, expected, legal, not allowed to be criticized, and expressly political.

  • I could care less if they spy on people, they do it to protect us.

  • Its not the fact it is private that matters, its the principal. If you allow them to get away with human rights offensives, they will just go and break more and more and more. I have nothing to hide,

If you have NOTHING TO HIDE why would you care

Because Breaking the law is breaking the LAW. And with the U.S. Government Breaking the LAW they should be punished! Not to mention it IS aginst legal and moral RIGHTS

What the NSA did was ilegal and broke the 4th Amendment which says Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and REQUIRES a warrant which MUST be based on Probable Cause.

Before the NSA was doing this ilegaly, now who is not to say they still are?

Because it's highly hypocritical for the government that is supposed to carry out the law to break the "supreme law of the land."

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

Oh, what a nice thread. Personally, I don't think secret services were invented in USA or Nazi Germany. Every state spies on its citizens, because every government always fear for it's safety. But for some reasons it's the U.S. of A., not he worst country in the world, there those traitorous bastards like Snowden come from. Infiltrate a state-security organization, pretend to be an honest citizen, acquire classified information and then run to a rival country! It used to be called 'treason' in the good old days.

I'd ask those who think their privacy is more important than the security of the nation, do you prefer to have Russian spies in your country, Arabian spies, Chinese spies? Terrorist, drug lords, all those nice people who have the right to privacy too?..

Be careful with that petition! It's so powerful it could hurt someone! /sarcasm

Seriously, if you're unhappy with it, find ways round it. Encrypt your Internet. Use a VPN. Use Tor. Use public/private key cryptography. Not a fucking petition, that's just a joke and probably gets you on a watchlist for signing it.

Hey, you forgot that  you never went to the moon, JFK lives in Scotland with Janis Joplin and the only reason you've been in a Cold war for the last 45 years was because snake-headed aliens run the oil business! I suggest you stop with that stuff you use :D

Lots of people are just blind. 'We protect the world against terrorism'. They made PRISM in end 90's. 9/11: Did they prevent that? No. That terrorist in Norway on that small island: did they prevent that? No.

They are just spying on your messages, calls etc...

Use Tor.

They hacked and monitored Tor already ;)

You just don't understand. Once you allow the government to take rights away from it's people, they take more. Governments like power. That's a FACT. Also people who don't care that their rights are being taken away for any reason, just allows them to see how far they can push to take more rights away

Secret service was created to protect the president. The CIA (central intelligence Agency) and NSA (National Security Agency) were developed to spy

Snowden for some reason has been blamed and marked as a bad person FOR DOING SOMETHING GOOD and right. If it was not for him we would never have know what our government is doing.

And for your last question. A government who is chosen by the people and is suppose to be run by the people is a Democracy! If we choose our government and they turn around and spy on us and treat us that every single American citizen is a threat, show that they don't trust us.

And that is all wrong

I allow them to stop me, arrest me, search me. I allow to force me to pay taxes. So your warning is nice but too late.

I mean secret services in general, all the agencies that operate outside of public view. No need for that lesson, but thanks anyway.

Snowden betrayed the interests of the agency that hired him. Say, do you think that Soviet spies who took America's nuclear weaponry technology did the right thing? And hey... If you really thought that government doesn't spy on people..  Wake up.Kinda obvious for me.

Sounds nice, but I can't imagine that in modern world. America has too many rivals to allow itself to be purely democratical.

You're just not getting the point.

I'm sorry if you don't agree

Again, why should the government that is supposed to enforce laws against the people get a free pass when breaking the Supreme Law of the Land?

Thanks you again! At least someone knows what they are talking about.

Hitler did the same thing wire tapped and spied on his own people and look what happened.  And a nation should not be so afraid of its own citizens that it must become a police state and spy on your every move.

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Ben Franklin

Okay here's the deal with that.

That was in a age where the only security risk was people burning down hay houses, did he know that in 200 years there would be bombs in briefcases that could level a building? Did he know there was going to be nuclear weapons that could destroy entire cities and kill millions in the matter of seconds? Did he know there was going to be terrorist groups dedicated to killing people? Did he know that computers and cell phones would be around, so it made it easier for people to blow shit up? Did he know any of this was going to happen?

When he said that quote he was talking about his time.

I'm pretty sure he didn't stop with that stupid fucking quote. Its like bringing a Butter Knife to a gun fight.

Just to make sure i'm getting this through to you i'll bold it for you.

NOW A DAYS THINGS ARE DIFFERENT 200 YEARS AGO THEY DIDNT HAVE BOMBS THAT COULD KILL HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE IN A HIDDEN IN A BRIEFCASE

Also there not watching people like you and me, there watching the people who go on google and search "How to make a IED" or something like that.
