I think it's a Scandinavian or Northern European tradition, Christmas Eve is the big day here where there's a big feast, then some time during the evening we'll dance around the tree and open the gifts. The 25th and 26th is mostly for getting together with you extended family for even more delicious food, it's a wonderful 3 day feast.

I was about to say that if you got the TV series, you're in for a bucketload of disappointment and bad acting. I only watch the show to see how bad it can get.
